Tapply Chairman of Committees on making sure Mrs. Welch saves a second boat for us for relaying information on exchanging greetings with Charley Watkins and on bringing another outboard motor L. Putnam Chairman of Committees on bringing one outboard motor on foodstuffs on putting Perc Main in his place for getting up early to look at Thomas Pond to see if there are signs of a salmon ripple on it and on making damned sure his outboard motor percolates and R. Putnam Chairman of Committees on suggesting we go ashore on Bedspring Island for lunch for announcing crucial hours for fishing on being ready on time and on whatever the hell he's chairman of.<br/>These are Tapply's own original typed letters with likely three other carbon-copy sets having been sent to his fishing companions. The book Partridge Shortenin by "G. Grouse" pseudonym of Gorham Cross describes this trip in the chapter "Operation Sebago." Unique. unknown books

Very interesting account of Harris' explorations in southern Africa giving a view of the land and the abundance of game at the earliest stages of the Boer emigration from British territories. In an addendum to the prefatory matter Harris records learning of the massacre of Piet Retief and his party of voortrekkers by Dingaan and the Zulu in February 1838. The work was subsequently published as The Wild Sports of Southern Africa in London editions in 1839 1841 1844 and 1852. This edition includes a six-page list of subscribers chiefly military and civil servants in India. With the ownership signature and bookplate of H.A. Eugene Connett founder and proprietor of The Derrydale Press had two major personal sporting interests: angling and wildfowling both of which are depicted in the scant handful of original watercolors he made for his own amusement. These while most appealing are obviously products of an amateur hand. This etching by all indications the only one he ever did differs both in subject matter and degree of skill: despite a certain stiffness in delineating the contours of the animal's body it is a near professional piece of work and it seems almost incredible that knowing what we do about Connett's artistic penchant he rose to such heights. Something about the etching suggests that it may be the portrait of a specific horse--in which case the accomplishment is even greater. Connett as publisher writer and sportsman comes with this unique example into the realm of sporting artist--an unexpected distinction up to now. unknown books

Spine sunned else fine. 240 ff. aprox. written on recto only on onionskin paper in black ink with corrections and emendations throughout. 8vo 8 x 4 3/4 inches. The autograph printer's manuscript for the lead article for the March 1906 issue of Scribner's Magazine recounting an early long-distance motoring trip undertaken by Norman with two American friends which took them over perilous alipne passes. Scientific American described it as "the best appreciation of the true charm of motoring ever written." <br/><br/>Sir Henry Norman 1858-1959 was an early member of the Automobile Club of Great Britain and Ireland and had occasion as an M.P. elected in 1900 to represent the interests of motorists. <br/>"Norman joined the staff of the Pall Mall Gazette under the editorship of the celebrated W. T. Stead and became a prominent and prolific journalist in the heyday of the 'new journalism'. He maintained his links with the United States working as a London correspondent for the New York Times. An astute networker Norman reported on literary theatrical and political matters and came to know such figures as Robert Louis Stevenson William Archer Walter Pater Henry Irving George Bernard Shaw and Walt Whitman. In 1887 he set off on a four-year world tour on behalf of several international newspapers reporting from places as far apart as Canada Siberia the Philippines Siam and Japan. The trip gave him material for his successful travel books The Real Japan 1892 and The Peoples and Politics of the Far East 1895" ODNB. unknown books
