‎Summary In the fall of 2016 an international scholarly conference accompanied the exhibition Beyond Words: Illuminated Manuscripts in Boston Collections. The speakers were chosen because of their expertise and because they were known to have research underway pertaining to important manuscripts in the exhibition. The aim of both exhibition and conference was to provide a broad overview of the history of patronage and book production over the course of the High and late Middle Ages, to the extent that the eclectic holdings of Boston-area institutions permitted. Most of the papers delivered at the conference have been collected as essays in this abundantly illustrated volume which, while still linked to the exhibition, now has an independent purpose. Just as the essays cover a wide range of topics, all relating to the history of the book, but also, inter alia, to the history of law, liturgy, literature, and libraries as well as to devotion, theology, and art, so too the approaches adopted by the contributors are as varied as the materials they study, ranging from paleography, codicology, and provenance research to painstaking reconstructions of historical patterns of patronage and the interpretative strategies of authors and artists. What results is not simply a wealth of fascinating insights into individual illuminated books, their makers, and their readers, but also an indication of how much remains to be learned about the materials to which the exhibition served as no more than an introduction. ‎Prachtvoller großformatiger Abzug der sorgfältig arrangierten Aufnahme. Sie entstand in den letzten Junitagen des Jahres 1884 und zeigt Liszt an seinem Schreibtisch in der Weimarer Hofgärtnerei. Über diese Aufnahme berichtet der Lisztschüler Carl V. Lachmund ("Mein Leben mit Franz Liszt", 1970, S. 288): "Montag um die Mittagszeit [es handelte sich um einen der letzten Juni-Tage des Jahres 1884], da er gewöhnlich seine Arbeit abbrach, fanden wir ihn [Liszt] in bester Stimmung, meine Frau glättete sein Seidenhaar, während ich den Band der Werke Bachs so aufs Klavier stellte, daß der Name erkannt werden konnte - wußten wir doch von seiner tiefen Verehrung für Bach und Beethoven. Er mußte eine volle Minute stillsitzen, was keine leichte Sache war, denn Blitzlicht war damals noch nicht in Gebrauch." Bei demselben Fototermin entstand auch eine Gruppenaufnahme mit Lachmund und seiner Gattin im Garten (vgl. Burger, Franz Liszt in der Photographie seiner Zeit, Nrn. 182 f.). - Auf der Rückseite mit Eintragung. - An den Rändern minimal ausgesilbert.‎

I am glad the translation of your poem pleases you. With the original I was exceedingly struck. It was put in my hands by a friend who had just lost both wife and child: accompanied by a request, that I would translate it for him, which the beauty of the poem would have prompted me to do even without his request. In America it found universal favor & spoke consolation to more than one heart, which found in it the expression of its own sorrow. I mention this, because I am sure it must give You sincere pleasure to know, that in a land so far away from Your fireside, You have been the interpreter and consoler of many who were suffering. No truth seems to be spoken in vain. At some time or other - in some place or other - it finds an ear to receive it, and a voice to repeat it. | I have read with pleasure Your "Nebenbuhler in Reutlingen". It is a beautiful little Ballad; and I was particularly struck with the description of the Smith at work, with his "nervigen Arm, die hohe Gestalt, | das Feueraug, Haar das wie Mähnen wallt". I should be very much pleased to visit you in Stuttgart, if it is possible that I may accomplish it. I was there six years ago on my way to the Tyrol and was much pleased with the town. ‎London, 20 September 1947. Manuscript Signed Letter by the Right Honourable Montgomery of Alamein, to well known fiction writer Lady Anderson, mentioning an unpublished book by Anderson which precedes her formal writing career. 8vo. Single-leaf measuring approximately 14 x 18cm (5.5 x 7 inches). Very good condition, and accompanied by the original postally used envelope. Graciously confirming receipt of what appears to be an unpublished book by a well known female author, and perhaps the first she had written, this letter is penned and signed by Bernard Law Montgomery (1887-1976), 1st Viscount Montgomery of Alamein, and British Army Field Marshal nicknamed "Monty" and the "Spartan General" whose illustrious military career spanned both World Wars, during which time he earned numerous honours and awards. The recipient is Barbara Anderson, Lady Anderson (1926-2013) née Barbara Lillian Romaine, an internationally recognized fiction writer from New Zealand, and later, the wife of Sir Neil Dudley Anderson, Chief of New Zealand Defence Staff. Only a few months to this letter being written, Barbara had graduated with a BSc from Otago University. She subsequently worked as a medical technologist and teacher, though her passion had always been in writing. She finally pursued her formal writing career in her sixties, publishing a volume of short stories, for the first time, in 1989. The book mentioned in this letter does not appear on common lists of her published works, and pre-dates her writing career by approximately thirty years. The letter reads as follows: "Dear Lady Anderson, I have just got back from Germany and found your book 'Lend Me Your Ears'. Thank you so very much.
