Volume IV is devoted to the items in the Beinecke's general collection with the shelf numbers 481, 482, 483, 484, and 485, each a discrete collection of manuscript fragments. The text consists of 285 entries -- describing single leaves, groups of leaves, or pieces of leaves -- of medieval and Renaissance manuscripts written between the seventh and sixteenth centuries in Western Europe. They are, for the most part, the battered remnants of otherwise lost books from the Middle Ages. Almost all of the fragments included in this catalogue are in Latin, although there are a few items in Middle High German and in Hebrew. The two larger groups of fragments described here (MS 481 and MS 482) were assembled originally as a palaeographical collection documenting a wide range of Latin bookscripts used during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. Included are specimens in Uncial, Visigothic, Merovingian, Beneventan, and humanist scripts, as well as numerous examples of Caroline minuscule and Gothic book hands,with a particular richness in eleventh- and twelfth-century manuscripts from Southern Germany. The fragments described in the catalogue are almost all derived from books. There are manuscripts of biblical texts (with and without glosses), classical and patristic authors, exegetical treatises, sermons, liturgical works, monastic rules, medieval encyclopedias, legal works, scholastic treatises, schoolbooks, grammatical works, medieval chronicles, calendars, and medieval poetry. Classical authors are represented by manuscripts of Vergil and Cicero; the Greek fathers by Basil and Origen (in Latin translation); the Latin fathers by Augustine, Jerome, and Gregory. Medieval writers include Isidore, Bede, Paul the Deacon, Notker Balbulus, Bern of Reichenau, and Thomas Aquinas; and on the secular side, Boethius, Priscian, Wirnt von Gravenburg, Eberhard of Bethune, and Ludolphus de Luco. There are numerous liturgical manuscripts, many of them with early examples of musical notation, including a substantial portion of an eleventh-century breviary; sequentiaries with works by Notker Balbulus and Gottschalk; and seventeen leaves of a twelfth-century antiphonary from Lambach that shed new light on the performance there of a Magi play. Manuscripts written in Italy, Spain, France, England, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, and the Low Countries are represented. A few items can be attributed to specific writing centres, including scriptoria in Luxeuil, Reims, Tours, Fresing, Fulda, Schaffhausen, Lambach, Kremsmunster, and Melk. New.‎

Elles nous eclairent encore sur la theologie de l'epoque et parfois comportent un enseignement moral a la maniere d'une predication. Enfin il faut rappeler le domaine ou les inscriptions sont les plus nombreuses, celui des epitaphes. Le present ouvrage est le fruit de trente ans de recherches. Il se veut un instrument pour etudier cette source et en tirer toutes les informations qu'elle porte. Il est complete par une soixantaine d'illustrations et le commentaire de plus d'une centaine de textes. This volume discusses the key shift from manuscript to print culture in the history of books, taking The Canterbury Tales, The Book of Margery Kempe, and Piers Plowman as models of the way in which a medieval text's unique tradition influenced its transition from manuscript to print. The forces of the Reformation era did not produce the same effect across the varied textual legacy of the Middle Ages. Every text that made the transition from manuscript to print brought with it a set of concerns, a tendency to address a particular readership in particular ways, a physical presence developed in manuscript culture, all of which might shape the pathways by which a text might arrive in print, and what it might look like when it got there. This study follows The Canterbury Tales, The Book of Margery Kempe, and Piers Plowman from their circulation in manuscript to their presentation in print, in order to track how each of them survived the metamorphosis of the relationship between writers and readers as the new technology was introduced. Taken together, the three case studies demonstrate to scholars of any medieval literature the variety of possible impacts made when texts composed in manuscript culture were prepared for printing. The great force exerted by the technological and cultural developments of the English Reformation, not least the more centralized legislative regulation of the press, has long been central to the study of the history of books. This volume takes into account the ways in which individual textual traditions pushed back or accelerated the forces of early modern reform, producing their own plural reformations.‎

Cela a aussi permis de mettre en valeur la personnalite de certains grands artistes de la fin du Moyen Age dont la polyvalence et la culture ont seduit le prince.‎

‎Grace a une convention passee entre le Matenadaran d?Erevan et l?Universite d?Aix-Marseille 1, R. Varteni Chetanian a pu etablir le catalogue des manuscrits grecs et des fragments grecs presents au sein des manuscrits armeniens conserves dans la prestigieuse bibliotheque de la capitale de l?Armenie. Au cours de ses sejours a Erevan, elle a sans cesse beneficie du soutien et des conseils des bibliothecaires. Je les remercie d?avoir rendu possible l?elaboration de cet instrument de travail. La presente publication permet de faire connaitre aux chercheurs du monde entier des documents precieux, mais insuffisamment pris en compte par les hellenistes et les armenisants. En particulier, il reste beaucoup a faire dans le domaine des traductions des textes litteraires grecs en armenien. Le Catalogue de R. Varteni Chetanian, qui a par ailleurs publie une remarquable etude sur la traduction armenienne des Homelies sur les Actes des apotres de Jean Chrysostome, donne un moyen nouveau de progresser dans ce champ de recherche. C?est dire que le present Catalogue ne doit pas etre envisage comme une fin ou une cloture. Il doit au contraire etre a l?origine d?autres travaux : travaux d?edition des plus importants textes grecs exhumes par R. Varteni Chetanian ; travaux de numerisation des fragments et des manuscrits, afin de rendre possible leur consultation a distance. Jalon pour l?avenir de la recherche historique et philologique, voila comment doit etre envisage ce Catalogue. Sa confection a ete l?occasion de tisser des liens scientifiques entre l?Armenie et la France. Puissent les travaux qu?il suscitera permettre de poursuivre dans la meme voie et d?approfondir le sillon ainsi trace.‎

Contrakt sollte derselbe M 48.000 für die eine Platte zahlen) ausführen sollen, und zwar in Linienstich; da jedoch Herr Günther seinen Verpflichtungen nicht mehr nachkommen konnte, so unterblieb die Sache, und erst vor einigen Jahren nahm ich die Platte wieder vor, um sie nun zeitgemäß bloß in Stichradierung auszuführen. Die Originalaquarelle habe ich im Jahre 1875 im Vatikan vor dem Bilde ausgeführt. Zur besseren Verständigung lege ich den alten Vertrag bei. Sollte Ihre ehemalige Kunsthandlung auf das Werk reflectieren wollen, so würde ich jetzt beide Platten um 15.000 Mark abgeben können; die schon verstählt augenblicklich druckfähig wären. Im Falle Sie wünschen, daß ich dort die ersten Ducke überwache, würde ich nach Regensburg kommen. Jedenfalls bitte ich, beide Exemplare für Ihre Sammlung gütigst annehmen zu wollen [...]" G. J.
