4to. French and Arabic manuscript on paper by two or three hands. (12), 19 pp., 4 blank pp., (1), 46, 13 pp., blank verso. In original wrapper with handwritten title. French translation of an essay on the Latin transcription of the Arabic alphabet by the renowned oriental scholar H. A. Barb, the first translator of the "Sharaf-nama". The slim work was published in German in 1860 as "Die Transcription des arabischen Alphabetes". Although no French translation of this work is known to have appeared in print, the corrections and annotations scattered throughout the manuscript suggest that it was either an effort by Barb himself - although at least two hands can be identified for the main text - or drawn up by his students and merely revised by Barb. Apart from the preface and chapters 1 and 2 as well as parts of chapters 3 and 4 of the "Transcription", it includes a 41-page section in Arabic script that does not appear in the German publication. While the corrections in the preface and the first two chapters are done in pencil, those found in chapters 3 and 4 are executed in red crayon, mainly numbering the examples in the German publication, here merely referenced by the scribe. The Arabic section (possibly in a third hand) shows several corrections in pencil as well as annotations in blue crayon, including several question marks. - Barb, a native of Galicia, served as the director of Vienna's Oriental Academy (now the Diplomatic Academy). He converted to Catholicism in 1884 while in his first year of law at the University of Vienna and rose in the Austrian civil service to the rank of Hofrat, a distinction rarely accorded to those of Jewish ancestry. As a scholar he received recognition both at home and abroad for his contributions towards the study of Persian and oriental languages. - Large tear to lower cover, small tears to spine. Interior somewhat browned and brownstained throughout, otherwise very well preserved. A unique survival.

Manuscript Signed Letter, dated 21 January 1897, discussing matters pertaining to the settlement era of Perth, Western Australia. 8vo. Two double-leafs, 5 pages. Very good condition. Fascinating content such as a poverty, drought, general health issues in Perth from the conditions, problems of the homeless, and in contrast the increase in land values, and prospects for youngsters, The writer also talks of the Music Society and of singing the Messiah at Christmas. Written by M. Barigh of Havelock Street, her home located on a hill above the central town, who may have been a relative of Richard Henry Barigh, an immigrant to Australia, possibly originally as a convict. Excerpts from the letter: "Lately we have had a water famine and all day long the water is cut off but we fill a tank and so it does not cause us much inconvenience... We do not like W.A. half so much as N.Z. it is too hot and dry and this town is not healthy." "The place must have grown half since we came and building is going on all the time and the values of property increasing - our land cost about four pounds a foot and a lady has just bought this piece adjoining ours and given over eleven pounds for it and thinks she has got it cheap." "There are scores of people here with nothing who a little while since in Melbourne were living in luxury." End Excerpts. Perth had only been established since 1829. In 1850, Western Australia was opened to convicts at the request of farming and business people looking for cheap labour. Queen Victoria announced the city status of Perth in 1856.

Baroque pattern book and album
of the blanket maker Johann Franz Hörmannsperger. Vienna, 1736.
Oblong folio (390 x 252 mm). 118 numbered ff. (but 115: ff. 96, 106, and 112 skipped). Calligraphic preface by Hörmannsperger, 58 full-page textile designs by the same, mostly in red, blue, green, and gilt (including one folded, double-page sized specimen and 4 ff. with 2 designs each), 7 splendid gouache washes raised in gilt and silver; bound in between these are a total of 52 engravings on 48 plates, all in splendid contemporary colour raised in gilt and silver. Contemp. marbled boards. Unique, museum-quality document of late Baroque craftsmanship among the urban Third Estate: apart from 58 meticulously executed textile designs, the album contains seven large-format gouaches showing the self-assured author practising his trade in his workshop, advertising and selling his wares to customers, as well as playing music and even bowling, but also attending the general meeting of the Viennese blanket makers. The engravings which Hörmannsperger inserted between his own works all show mundane subjects (dwarves, soldiers, caricatures, etc.): thus, his autograph textile designs and gouaches are interleaved with some of the rarest and most charming pieces produced by the 1720's Augsburg school of engraving. - The album is introduced by a self-portrait of the 26-year-old Hörmannsperger in his workshop (with his compass and one of the later-included textile designs lying on the table); on the opposite page he offers a brief preface to the volume: "for true art speaks for the master: here is a book, all mine, with many drawings, as they will be seen, all drawn by me, though I say so myself, with much time, labour, and trouble [...] I, Johann Frantz Hörmansperger" (transl.). The captions to the splendid gouaches prove the author's humour (sometimes bawdy) as well as a trait of surprising self-confidence. Pitching his self-plaited blanket to a female customer, he addresses her: "My dear lady, here's a fine blanket for you - you may well stretch yourself under this: one and a half ells wide and two in length; perfect for flipping over with your husband underneath" (transl., f. 84). Another image shows him selling saddlecloths to military officers ("we'll have these and take them into battle", f. 86); yet another shows him bowling in a Baroque garden at the weekend ("All gay and jolly, for we are journeymen of the trade: and so the virgins may be; they will not be bored - here is red wine and white, so well we may make merry", f. 94) and dancing ("Be merry all. Musicians play! Thus do the blanket makers frolic and dance with pretty girls until their shoes may fall to pieces", f. 104). The final leaf shows an apprentice received into the society of blanket makers at their quarterly general assembly ("The blanket makers convene today to discuss what concerns the society: the young man must have learned his trade; he is not too tall nor too small. But he must put in his time, until he is made a journeyman", f. 118). Some of Hörmannsperger's ornamental designs, created with the use of a compass, include centerpieces showing armorial or figural motifs; one design (f. 113) is apparently a commission for Emperor Charles VI (bearing his monogram and Imperial insignia); according to the later caption, it was indeed executed for him. - Between his own works Hörmannsperger bound engravings by the great Augsburg masters of his age, all splendidly coloured and raised in gilt and silver: eight engravings from Elias Bäck's dwarf series (fencing school, drinking, gluttony, and tobacco addiction), a complete cycle of the seasons and the life stages of man by Martin Engelbrecht ("Der Menschen Jahr Veränderung"), a total of 19 of the famous engravings by Pfeffel, Schmidt, and Engelbrecht showing a soldier's life (two with movable parts), as well as a fine broadsheet by Albrecht Schmidt showing the seven Honest Swabians, and finally an untitled eight-page cycle showing the female tempers. - The Austrian and especially the Viennese bedclothes were known for their high quality throughout the continent. During their golden age in the 18th century they were exported to all European courts, as well as to Greece, Turkey, and many oriental countries. At the time this album was drawn up, there were ten masters of the profession in Vienna alone creating blankets and mattresses as well as backpacks and cuirasses. - Provenance: acquired in 1893 "from Mr Josef Lang's son-in-law" by the bedclothes merchant Josef Pauly, supplier to the Royal and Imperial court, and passed on by him to Mr. Junghofer, chairman of the bedclothes makers' cooperative, in 1896 (cf. Pauly's autograph dedication note on the flyleaf); last in an Austrian private collection. Boards imperceptibly restored at lower spine end; interior slightly fingerstained; slight tears to two leaves, but in excellent state of preservation altogether.

ALS with Nautical Content - New Navigational Tables by Beaufort and Raper
One Original Signed Letter from Sir John Barrow to Davies Gilbert. 8vo. 1 page on a single-leaf, dated 22 August, (content reveals the year is 1831). Leaf measures approximately 18cm x 11,5cm (7 inches x 4.5 inches). Very good condition. In 1831, the Royal Astronomical Society deemed it imperative for advancement in navigation, to form "New Requisite Tables" which would be introduced in the impending publication of the New Nautical Almanack. At the behest of Captain Beaufort, Hydrographer to the Admiralty, RN Lieutenant Henry Raper, a revered authority on navigation, was in charge of constructing the charts. Here Sir John Barrow, Secretary of the Admiralty, is evidently responding to an enquiry by Davies Gilbert, mathematician and President of the Royal Society. Barrow assures Gilbert that he has directed the question to Captain Francis Beaufort, who is an integral member of the committee charged with making the nautical charts. Signed in the original by Sir John Barrow, the letter states: "The subject of the New Requisite Tables is in the hands of the Astronomical Society and has been for some time, but as yet they have not made any report. I have shown your note to Capt Beaufort who is one of the Committee." Billet autographe signé à Yann Lemée : "Je suis bien touché de ce que tu ne m'oublies pas"
- Paris s.d. (circa 1978), 14,8x10,5cm, un billet et une enveloppe. - Billet autographe signé de Roland Barthes adressé à Yann Lemée. Huit lignes à l'encre noire. Une enveloppe à en-tête du Collège de France ne correspondant pas à la date de la lettre est jointe. "Mon petit Yann, Je suis bien touché de ce que tu ne m'oublies pas - malgré mes silences et mes apathies de surface. Si tu viens à Paris, n'oublie pas de me le dire à l'avance pour que l'on se voit. Je t'embrasse moi aussi bien tendrement. RB" Roland Barthes fait la connaissance de Yann Lemée en mai 1977 alors que ce dernier est étudiant en philosophie à l'université de Caen. En juin 1977, Barthes l'invite à un colloque, organisé par Antoine Compagnon à Cerisy-la-Salle, qui lui est consacré : « Prétexte Roland Barthes ». « Roland passe une nuit avec un jeune universitaire, Yann. Las, c'est pour l'entendre parler presque sans interruption de Marguerite Duras. "Je lui ai fait une lettre d'introduction pour Marguerite, ce sera mieux pour tout le monde", confie-t-il, dépité, le lendemain matin. » (Hervé Algalarrondo, Les derniers jours de Roland B., Stock, 2006) Quelques années plus tard en 1980, Yann Lemée devenu Yann Andréa, sera le dernier compagnon de Marguerite Duras, de 38 ans son aînée. Carte autographe signée de Roland Barthes à René Wintzen
- s. l. 19 janvier 1955, 13,5x10,5cm, une carte recto verso. - Carte autographe signée de Roland Barthes à René Wintzen de 24 lignes écrites à l'encre bleue, deux soulignements de la main de l'auteur. Deux perforations portant atteinte à plusieurs lettres, une coupure sans manque, bavures sans gravité. Roland Barthes écrit cette carte pour remercier René Wintzen de lui avoir fait parvenir un livre dédicacé mais aussi pour l'accueil que ce dernier lui a reservé. René Wintzen fut rédacteur en chef de Documents, revue des questions allemandes. Il dirige, au moment de la rédaction de cette lettre, les éditions et la revue Vent Debout et participe à l'hebdomadaire allemand Nouvelle de France. Le livre auquel Barthes fait ici référence est probablement une étude de Wintzen sur Brecht parue l'année précédente. Brecht vient à Paris en 1954 avec le Berliner Ensemble et marque beaucoup la réflexion sur le théâtre de Barthes qui fait paraître "La révolution brechtienne" dans la revue Le Théâtre populaire. Dans cette deuxième moitié des années 1950, Barthes s'investit en effet pleinement dans le théâtre en tant que spectateur et critique. René Wintzen est aussi organisateur de colloques et de rencontres entre auteurs. Roland Barthes participe d'ailleurs l'année suivante à une de ces rencontres à Vezelay où il intervient sur les rapports entre littérature et réalisme. Il écrit à son correspondant qu'il a été "sincèrement très content de ces rencontres et que l'espèce de scepticisme que l'on a toujours au seuil des parlottes d'écrivains a été en l'occurence absolument contré par les faits". L'auteur semble ici mettre en doute l'importance des débats, "parlottes", entre écrivains. Ce jugement réprobateur apparait en conflit avec l'attitude de Barthes en cette année 1955. En effet, il participe et s'engage dans trois débats d'importance : avec Camus au sujet de La Peste, avec Jean Paulhan à propos des Petites mythologies du mois que Barthes écrit dans les pages de la Nouvelle NRF, et enfin pour la défense de la pièce Nekrassov de Sartre. Cette carte de Barthes montre l'enthousiasme du jeune auteur qui ne fréquente alors les milieux littéraires que depuis quelques années, mais aussi une critique de la parole des écrivains.
