ISBN 9780905203959.‎ ‎This publication is the fifth and final volume in the series that catalogues and illustrates all extant manuscripts of Beatus's Commentary on the Apocalypse. It is a tradition that originated in the monastery of San Toribio in the valley of Liebana, where the monk Beatus compiled his commentary on the Book of Revelation in 776 A.D., and that had its last manifestation in the stylistically exuberant manuscript in Paris, the Arroyo Beatus, produced shortly before the middle of the thirteenth century. Six illustrated Commentaries and one fragment are catalogued in the present volume. The spectacular Rylands Beatus in Manchester, dated around 1175 and the Las Huelgas Beatus in New York, made some fifty years later, contain the most complete cycles of illustrations, and both also have links with the Castilian capital of Burgos. The Cardena Beatus, which has a more complex origin, is now divided between four different collections, though a major part of the manuscript is now in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Also catalogued is the sophisticated Romanesque Beatus of Navarre in Paris, as well as the only Commentary produced in Portugal ? the Lorvao Beatus now in Lisbon. The fragment also included here, consisting of a single folio plus part of another, found its way from Medina de Rioseco to Mexico in the 16th century, and by chance contained illustrations that allowed it to be identified as part of a Beatus Commentary of the early thirteenth century. In addition to the author?s Introduction and detailed catalogue, the volume includes a corpus of more than 500 illustrations. As in the catalogues of earlier periods, all inscriptions contained in the manuscripts have been transcribed, and an overview of apocalypse subjects illustrated in all 26 surviving manuscripts can be seen on the clearly presented Table. ISBN 9782503516769.‎ ‎The multi-volume project responds to long-standing lacunae in Old French text study and Arthurian scholarship, in that it aims to provide a linguistically and scribally authentic text of a single illustrated Arthurian manuscript; in this case, it is one that has never before been edited, collated, or translated. Since research on text, language, and manuscript may be impeded by editorial policies operative in older editions of medieval narratives and since viewing the manuscripts directly is often difficult or impossible, the editorial board set protocols for the Lancelot Prose of 229 editions that would address the need for authentic, accessible texts, packaged with ancillaries to address a variety of reading and experience levels. At the same time, the board wished to take into account the potential of electronic images to enhance scholarly work and teaching based on the editions. The idea of a strictly 'diplomatic edition' was discarded in light of digital technology's ability to provide high-resolution images of an original that are useful for close private study and public viewing. Thus each edition provides a useful, portable, authentic reading of Old French Arthurian narrative that is supported externally by online electronic images and internally by a selection of wonderful illustrations and a variety of ancillary materials and essays developed through years of study and teaching based on Yale 229. The Mort begins with the return of Bohors from the quest of the Holy Grail and narrates the declining fortunes of King Arthur and his Round Table through the dissolution of the Table and the 'death' of Arthur. The tale includes Morgain's efforts to convince Arthur of Lancelot and Guinevere's adultery, Lancelot's battle to save Guinevere from burning at the stake, the dramatic discovery of Guinevere and Lancelot by Arthur's knights, the departure of Arthur from his kingdom to fight Lancelot, and Arthur's leaving his Kingdom, the keys to his treasury, and his Queen in the hands of the treacherous Mordret. In the closing folios, Arthur is mortally wounded by Mordret at the apocalyptic Battle of Salisbury Plain, and Lancelot returns to avenge Arthur against Mordret's two sons at the final Battle of Winchester. The book closes shortly after the death of Lancelot, with a rejection of the life of court and chivalry in favor of penance and spiritual fulfillment. First we have the discovery of the autograph of Cassiodorus. In shorthand, as one would expect from a busy man with a strong sense of time management, it testifies that Cassiodorus reviewed (Cassiodorus legi), or verified (perlegi Cassiodorus) a text. The signature occurs in codices that had already, through other considerations, been associated with Vivarium, and becomes in turn a strong criterion for the identification of works not previously associated with the Calabrian foundation. In some manuscripts a hand already known as 'manus prima', can now be identified with those of scribes active at Vivarium. These hands were not simply copying orthodox texts, but critically examining those written by authors of different persuasions: we know now that a codex well-known for its Arian scholia was studied and annotated at Vivarium. Cassiodorus and his team of writers/translators were squirreling away on texts by Church Fathers and heretics, analysing them, taking from them what could be suitable, reading everything. So, Vivarium was a militantly Chalcedonian monastery, but also one where the alternatives, dubbed by modern scholars 'Arian scholia' were duly studied and annotated. These essays by Fabio Troncarelli are an example of 'integral palaeography' in the sense of the definition, by now a classic, of Leonard E. Boyle (Medieval Latin Palaeography, Author's Preface, p. xv). Through the highly specialised technique of demanding discipline, the author succeeds in reconstructing the intellectual climate and the historical setting of Vivarium. ISBN 9782503513867.‎ ‎From the Treasure-House of Scripture presents the first comprehensive assessment of the relation between the Latin Bible and the text of the highly influential late-medieval devotional manual known as De Imitatione Christi (The Imitation of Christ). Consisting of a detailed analysis of scriptural sources in The Imitation, this work contains the complete Latin text of The Imitation juxtaposed against 3815 Vulgate source texts. Included are some 2600 sources collated from citations in seventy editions of The Imitation, and some 1200 sources newly identified in this study. A collation is presented of explicit statements in The Imitation on ?Scripture? and aspects of lectio divina (?prayed reading?). The textual analysis highlights several aspects of the relation between The Imitation and the Vulgate. First, some fifty ?forms of usage? of scriptural passages in The Imitation are described. Secondly, some three hundred scriptural passages important in informing the overall content of The Imitation are identified. Thirdly, the role of scriptural sources in helping to shape the ascetic character of The Imitation is discussed. Background information is presented on the content, authorship and influence of The Imitation; the Devotio moderna (?New Devotion? or ?Modern Devotion?) movement; the life of Thomas a Kempis; the role of Scripture and lectio divina in the New Devotion movement; and the general role of Scripture in Thomas a Kempis?s oeuvre. ISBN 9782503522579.‎ ‎Le recueil De uerbis Domini (VD) compte, outre quelques pieces inauthentiques ou de provenance douteuse, 51 homelies augustiniennes. Pour vingt-sept d'entre elles il est notre source unique; pour le texte de vingt et un sermons il est un temoin parmi d'autres, mais independant et de toute facon appreciable. Seuls les serm. 52 (VD n? 63), 71 (VD 11) et 112 (VD 33) font exception: tels qu'on les lit dans VD, ils derivent d'une collection antique dont il existe, a cote de VD, une tradition directe. Ces trois dernieres pieces ne sont pas denuees d'interet, au contraire: on peut en reconstituer le texte VD primitif, ce qui cree un fondement solide pour observer les modifications textuelles de VD tout au long de la lignee manuscrite. L'etude du recueil, entamee par P.-P. Verbraken, a ete poursuivie apres sa mort par R. Demeulenaere -- qui avait ete son adjoint dans ses investigations pendant les dernieres annees de sa vie --, B. Coppieters 't Wallant et L. De Coninck; ces chercheurs ont pu disposer de ses papiers et de ceux de C. Lambot, conserves a l'abbaye de Maredsous. La publication actuelle decrit l'histoire du texte VD et s'applique en meme temps a distinguer les principaux temoins de chaque branche de l'arbre genealogique. Elle couvre la totalite des mss. VD conserves d'avant 1100, ainsi que ceux du XIIe siecle qui reproduisent une ancienne forme textuelle et/ou structure globale du recueil n'ayant pas survecu ailleurs. Il s'agit d'une cinquantaine de mss. en tout -- plus de la moitie etant analyses ici pour la premiere fois. Sur base d'une collation des sermons 52, 71 et 112, dont on fournit en annexe une nouvelle edition munie d'un riche apparat, les auteurs identifient les familles, branches et rameaux de la tradition a l'aide de quarante tables de concordances. Des reproductions photographiques montrent des accidents materiels survenus dans des mss.-sources et ayant eu ensuite des repercussions sur l'histoire du texte. Ce troisieme recueil combine les deux themes. Les travaux qui y sont rassembles, et qui couvrent plus de vingt annees de recherches, portent non seulement sur Jean Scot et sur les maitres chartrains, mais sur leurs sources bibliques, patristiques et profanes. Parmi les sources patristiques, une place de choix est faite aux Peres grecs: Denys l'Areopagite, Gregoire de Nysse, Maxime le Confesseur. Pour les sources profanes, l'accent est mis sur les textes philosophiques qu'on lisait dans le monde latin en la premiere moitie du XIIe siecle, notamment le Timee de Platon et la Consolation de Philosophie de Boece. Ce nouveau recueil ne se distingue pas seulement par la diversite des sujets traites, mais aussi par la variete de leur approche. Cette analyse met en lumiere les differentes harmoniques que Tertullien fait vibrer et demontre sa continuite avec la tradition biblique. La deuxieme partie explicite les fondements theologiques a l'origine de la pensee de Tertullien au sujet de l'ascese sexuelle. Celle-ci ne se rend comprehensible que dans le contexte de l'ensemble de l'economie du salut. La sanctification de l'homme et son salut ultime sont concus comme un retour a sa condition originelle, regeneree dans le bapteme et rendue parfaite dans l'etat eschatologique. L'ascese sexuelle est presentee comme instrument de sanctification : elle est le moyen privilegie de conserver l'etat de saintete acquis par le bapteme et de rejoindre l'etat de la vie eternelle. La troisieme partie offre une description phenomenologique des differentes formes d'ascese sexuelle en tant qu'expression de sanctification a l'epoque de Tertullien.
