BAL 13658 First American edition.<br /><br /><i>Mardi</i> the Polynesian word meaning "the world" is Melville's first pure fiction work while featuring fictional narrators his previous novels were heavily autobiographical. It details much like <i>Typee</i> and <i>Omoo</i> the travelings of an American sailor who abandons his whaling vessel to explore the South Pacific. Unlike the first two however <i>Mardi </i>is highly philosophical and said to be the first work to show Melville's true potential. The tale begins as a simple narrative but quickly focuses upon discourse between the main characters and their interactions with the different symbolic countries they encounter. While not as cohesive or lengthy as <i>Moby-Dick</i> it shares a similar writing style as well as many of the same themes.<br /><br />Condition:<br /><br />Plumb coloring has faded and spine sunned with gilt dulled some foxing through out corners bumped with some light rubbing previous owner's name in pencil on title else about very good in a fine slipcase. Oakes Shaw as he was known was the eldest son from his father's second marriage to Hope Savage. He became the brother-in-law of Herman Meville when the author married Justice Shaw's daughter Elizabeth from his first marriage. In fact Oakes had truly disgraced his family when in 1844 he married an "inopportunely preganant Caroline Caro Sarah Cobb."<br/>Reading in full "Mr. John O. Shaw of Boston a son of Chief Justice Lemuel Shaw of Massachusetts is desirous of being appointed a pursor in the Navy. His father equally respectable as a Magistrate & a citizen desires me to speak a good word for him. One of the available posters sets the tone of the undertaking: "He dared to love a cannibal princess!" and suggests the direction in which the parties responsible traveled to give the film some popular draw. Los Angeles: United Artists 1976. Original b&w paste-up for reproduction 53.5 x 34 cm mounted to much larger mat board with acetate overlay. Some tanning and rubber cement stains some minor loss of letterpress at lower margin but in good state. An example of the production artwork for the highly pictorial one-sheet issued to promote the 1976 re-release of the 1956 Warner Brothers production directed by John Huston based on a screenplay by Ray Bradbury and Huston and starring Gregory Peck Richard Basehart Orson Welles et al. This poster features a vivid reconception of the artwork for the original release and adds the tag- line: "Before the Shark There was the Whale." The main artwork is partially affixed to the matboard while the larger letterpress and the pictorial vignette of Peck with harpoon in hand are laid down on the overlaid acetate sheet. Particulars in smaller font are affixed in strips below the main image on the matboard and a large caption "6-0937 1 SH FOREIGN PROOF is written in black felt-tip in the lower left corner. In a very good example of the scarce dust jacket slightly soiled with only minor edgewear. Contains eight color illustrations and color endpapers by Schaeffer. Typee was Melville's first novel inspired by the author's experiences on the island Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas Islands. Originally published in 1846 in London as Narrative of a Four Month Residence Among the Natives of the Marquesa Islands; or A Peep at Polynesian Life. Extremities a bit rubbed extreme upper foretip of text block nibbled otherwise a very good volume. The publisher's bound volume for whole numbers 127- 152 7 July through 29 December 1849. Contemporary with its New York publication on triple-column pages 395-7 10 November issue appears a significant selection from Melville's REDBURN and on triple column pages 418-20 17 November issue appears a lengthy review made up largely of excerpts from the text. Duyckinck and his brother George were influential tastemakers in the mid-19th century world of writing and publishing in the U. S. and Evert and Melville were close friends. In these pages Melville is christened the "De Foe sic of the Ocean." In the years 1845-6 Evert served as an editor for Wiley & Putnam's LIBRARY OF AMERICAN BOOKS wherein Melville's TYPEE made its North American appearance. E. A. & G. Duyckinck hardcover books
