Die hier verlistete, beinahe ein halbes Jahrhundert lang verschollene Bibliothek der “Deutschen Sozialisten in Cleveland” mit ihren über 600 Ausleiheinheiten war wohl schon zu ihrer Zeit eine der größten ihrer Art (die Arbeiterbibliotheken Münchens zum Vergleich wiesen 1902 einen durchschnittlichen Bestand von 186 Bänden auf; vgl. D. Langewiesche u. K. Schönhoven. Arbeiterbibliotheken und Arbeiterlektüre im Wilhelminischen Deutschland. S. 155. In: Archiv für Sozialgeschichte, Jg. 16 (1976), S. 156). Auch wenn man die Klagen der einschlägigen Forschung, daß sich keine einzige deutsche Arbeiterbibliothek in auch nur annähernd vergleichbarer Form erhalten haben soll, beiseite läßt ("Efforts to establish details of Pre-First World War workers' libraries, or even to find lending-cards from that time, have been totally unsuccessful" [H.-J. Steinberg. Workers Libraries in Germany before 1914. In: History Workshop/76, S. 166-180]), ist die Einmaligkeit des vorliegenden Bestandes schon durch die zahlreichen enthaltenen Unika gewährleistet. Neben den großen Klassikern des Sozialismus und der Philosophie des 19. Jahrhundertes sowie unzähligen seltenen frühsozialistischen und anarchistischen Pamphleten finden sich zahlreiche Beispiele für die deutschsprachige Publikationstätigkeit deutschstämmiger Sozialisten in Amerika, die zum Großteil offenbar weder in amerikanische noch europäische Bibliothekskataloge Eingang gefunden hat. Die Gründung der Bibliothek dürfte auf die Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts zurückgehen; der Bestandaufbau erfolgte in erster Linie von 1870 bis ca. 1900, also vor allem während jener Zeit, in der die Gründung und der Ausbau einer solchen Sammlung in Deutschland aufgrund des Sozialistengesetzes gar nicht möglich gewesen wäre. - War die Wissenschaft bisher bei statistischen Untersuchungen über die Anzahl der Entlehnungen einzelner Bücher, um über Auswertung der Lektüregewohnheiten zu einer "Psychologie des Proletariats" zu gelangen, auf "relativ wenige zeitgenössische Bibliotheksberichte [...] aus der 'Neuen Zeit' und den 'Sozialistischen Monatsheften'" (Langewiesche-Schönhoven, S. 166) angewiesen, bietet dieser Katalog die Entlehndaten und Ausleihzahlen der originalen einmontierten Ausleihzettel; darüber hinaus verlistet der Katalog die jeweiligen Bibliotheksignaturen mit Angaben zu weiteren Provenienzen der einzelnen Bände. Gutes Ex. - Hans Freyer (* 31. Juli 1887 in Leipzig; † 18. Januar 1969 in Ebersteinburg, Baden-Württemberg) war ein deutscher Soziologe, Historiker und Philosoph. Von der Lebensphilosophie beeinflusst, orientierte er sich am Neuhegelianismus. Er war ein Vertreter der Konservativen Revolution und der Begründer der so genannten („neueren“) Leipziger Schule. Von 1934 bis 1938 war er Mitglied des Ausschusses für Rechtsphilosophie, der von Hans Frank persönlich geleitet wurde. Freyer, der zwischen 1953 und 1963 als Emeritus in Münster lehrte, galt als überzeugter Nationalsozialist. ... Hans Freyer studierte seit 1907 an der Universität Greifswald Theologie (ein Jahr), Nationalökonomie, Geschichte und Philosophie. Ein Jahr später wechselte er an die Universität Leipzig, wo er 1911 promoviert wurde und sich 1920 habilitierte. Seit 1922 hatte er eine Professur an der Universität Kiel inne. Ab 1925 war er an der Universität Leipzig als erster Wissenschaftler auf einem Lehrstuhl für Soziologie tätig. Freyers frühe Werke zur Lebensphilosophie beeinflussten die deutsche Jugendbewegung. Er selbst engagierte sich im freistudentischen Serakreis um den Verleger Eugen Diederichs. Freyer engagierte sich von 1925 bis 1934 als Vorsitzender des "Bundes Freunde der Schule am Meer" und der daraus hervorgehenden "Außengemeinde" des reformpädagogischen Landerziehungsheims Schule am Meer auf der Nordseeinsel Juist, wo er u. a. mit Martin Luserke und Paul Reiner kooperierte. Leitmotiv des vorrangig musisch orientierten Internats war die Selbstfindung und -verwirklichung durch Selbstbetätigung - "agitur ergo sum". … (wiki)
