[China].
Kuang paper-money from the early Ming Dynasty. China, Ming dynasty, Hongwu era (1375-1398).
Ming dynasty 1 Kwan note of the Hung-wu era (1368-98), produced from 1375. Printed on grey mulberry bark paper, size ca. 335 x 222 mm. Framed and glazed. Extremely early example of a banknote, and a specimen of the largest paper money ever issued. The Chinese writing along the top of this Ming note reads "Da ming tong xing bao chao" (from right to left, in regular K'ai Shu style), which translates as "Great Ming Circulating Treasure Note". Below this, the denomination is written in two characters "yi guan" ("one string", then the equivalent of 1000 copper cash or one tael of purse silver or one-fourth tael of gold). Beneath the denomination is a picture of a string of 1000 coins, arranged in ten groups of one hundred coins. Beneath this are the instructions for use and a threat to punish forgers. - Paper very thin and fragile, with some very old repairs, partly faded and with some soiling, some folds. Traces of two faded red (vermilion) seal handstamps, one at each side. As these stamps typically tend to fade with time, they are not easily perceptible. These seals had the function of signatures on modern banknotes. The red imperial seal is applied on the reverse. The outer frame surrounding the text is ornamented with dragon patterns. On both sides of the centre are eight Chinese characters "Ta Ming Pao Ch'ao, Tien Hsia T'ung Hsing" (The Great Ming note, circulates everywhere) in Chuan Shu style. - The 1 Kuan note is the largest paper money ever issued. China was the first country in the world to use paper money (credit currency). The very earliest paper money notes date from the 11th and 12th centuries, but as only fragments of these are extant, they can only be described in very general terms. This kind of note was observed by Marco Polo in the 12th century, and he referred to it as "flying money". The oldest paper money of which a complete specimen survives is that from early Ming dynasty, dated 1375. These notes are the earliest numismatic prints, also the earliest obtainable commercial printing on paper, indeed very nearly the earliest obtainable printing of anything - a full lifetime before Gutenberg. Very few examples survive.

[Coiter, Volcher].
[Kinderskelett-Tafeln aus]: Externarum et internarum principalium humani corporis partium tabulae. [Nürnberg, Dietrich Gerlach, 1572].
2 rad. Tafeln (ca. 556 x 328 mm und 546 x 290 mm). Folio. - Etwas braunfleckig; kl. Einrisse alt hinterlegt. VD 16, ZV 3754. R. Herrlinger, Volcher Coiter (Nürnberg, 1952), S. 79ff. (mit Abb.).

[COLOUR PRINTING & TEXTILE DESIGNS/WOMEN]. PILLEMENT, Jean Baptiste
Fleurs oiseaux et fantaisies par. . . .
Paris: Ernst Henri 1924. Folio. 2 unnumbered leaves of text. With 40 mounted hand-coloured plates beautifully reproducing the original designs Rococco chinoiserie designs 3 plates w/ old reinforced mounts at upper corners a few w/ old offsetting from the original glue. Preserved in the original quarter-chinoiserie cloth over boards printed illustrated label on front cover front tie loosened from the fore-edge edgewear rubbing still a nice complete set of these plates. First edition thus of this exceptional portfolio reproducing the exquisite and fanciful botanical settings landscapes and allegorical Chinese figures from this extraordinary artist. His chinoiserie engravings exaggerated the wispy and delicate qualities of the style portraying the world as a fairyland fileed with colour and fantasy. His 18th-Century Rococo designs were wildly popular by decorative arts manufacturers and applied to silk textiles porcelain pottery wallpapers and even silver. Pillement 1719-1808 had developed by 1764 a new method of printing on silk with fast colours and that also encouraged the durability and legacy of his designs. The majority of these were engraved by the noted woman artist & engraver Anne Allen a British artist who not only was the second wife to Pillement but created etchings based on his paintings by using the “a la poupee†or multi-colour Intaglio copperplate engraving style of printmaking which breathed life into the intricate scenes. This portfolio reproduces many of her portfolios as well as those executed by Gauthier Dagoty Canot Avril and Robert Cooper. Ernst Henri, hardcover

Jacob Fugger (1542-98; after 1560: Herr von Babenhausen, Wellenburg und Boos) was the son of the banker Anton Fugger (nephew and successor of Jacob Fugger "the Wealthy"). He was known as "the Elder" to distinguish him from his like-named nephew (1567-1626) who in 1588 was still a student in Rome and later became Bishop of Constance. - Slight worming throughout, more pronounced in vol. 2 (especially near beginning and end; some loss to text). The splendid, exceptionally well-preserved pigskin bindings (slightly rubbed, back cover of vol. 2 showing minute chafing, otherwise perfect) are probably the work of the Augsburg master Jakob Bitmer (cf. Haebler). Adams C 2773. Edit 16, CNCE 13060. LThK VI, 185. OCLC 6967756. Not in BM-STC Italian. Binding's plate stamps: Haebler I, 55f.: I.B. VI, plates I & II.

[Cupping].
De cucurbitula libellus. Paris, Christian Wechel, 1541.
8vo. 31, (1) pp. Later blue wrappers. A compact Latin treatise on the ancient medical art of cupping, recorded already in the works of classical medical writers Galen and Celsus. This pocket-size booklet contained everything a doctor needed to know to make use of the technique in mid-sixteenth century Europe. - As typical of humanist medical studies, the anonymous work begins with a brief reflection on the Greek origins of cupping. It then describes the uses of the technique for the extraction of blood and the manipulation of the humours. Already on page 4 the relative safety of the non-invasive procedure is emphasised: "Idque auxilium ut minus vehemens, ita magis tutum". The author then goes on to discuss the various materials used for making the cups or "cucurbitulae" (literally, "little pumpkins" or "gourds"), how to use them, for how long, where in the various areas of the body, and against which ailments they can be employed. Modern readers interested in the history of the use of cupping to reduce pain and inflammation in the lower back will be pleased to see mention of the technique to this end on pp. 27-28. - The book has moderate to severe browning to the edges of the pages thoughout, more pronounced on pp. 11-14 but not affecting the text. On the first and final pages, the cover has formerly become adhesed to the paper, the later removal of which has left marks. The paper cover shows some black staining to the spine; numerous tears in the wrapper reveal frequent use. Rare. BM-STC French 126. Adams D 169. Wellcome I, 1690. OCLC 17534872. Not in Durling.

[DECORATIVE PRINTING]:
EIGHT LATE EIGHTEENTH-CENTURY WRITING SHEETS / MENU CARDS WITH HAND-COLOURED DECORATIVE ROCOCO BORDERS
c.1800. Eight decorative writing sheets of laid paper with elaborate engraved decorative borders with hand-colouring each contemporaneously mounted to card with pink and blue coloured paper edges and a blank sheet of laid paper affixed to the rear. The group including five different designs. Each measuring between 36.5 x 26cm and 33 x 24cm. Three apparently unused the other five with contemporary cut blank paper sections affixed to the central panels presumably to cover previous manuscript text/signs of use. There is rubbing to the coloured paper edging and some occasional light finger marking and dust soiling otherwise condition is very good indeed. A visually striking collection of writing sheets dating to the close of the eighteenth century most likely French decorated with vibrantly hand-coloured engraved Rococo borders incorporating fairies cherubs and sphinxes. Their particular use in this instance is somewhat unclear although being mounted to stiff card and with some having replaced sections to the blank panel it possible that they were being utilised as menu cards. unknown

[DOSSIE (Robert)]
The Handmaid to the Arts, Vol. the First. Teaching, I. A perfect knowledge of the Materia Pictoria, or, the nature, use, preparation, and composition of all the various substances employed in painting, as well vehicles, dryers, &c...
Second edition, 2 vols., 8vo (215 x 130 mm), xxvii, [9], 522, [10]; xiv, [14], 462, [x]pp., ownership signature torn away from outer upper bank margin of title page, final 3 leaves to vol. I and a couple of gathering from vol. II with waterstain tide mark (not unsightly), recent red half morocco, marbled boards, contrasting green morocco title label to spine, five raised bands, tooled in gilt. Robert Dossie (1717-1777) was a rigourous advocate for the advantages of improved public knowledge. With the publication of this work he provided information and instruction to the reader in a multitude of trades, many never before disclosed outside there trades. As a resource, it was well regarded by eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century artisans and became the standard work for practical techniques of that era.
