Small octavo. 45 1 pp. Hand-colored frontispiece and two full-page hand-colored illustrations and eighty-five hand-colored ornamental letters by Edith Harwood. Tail-piece. Caslon type. Publisher's vellum with rose and gilt lettering to front cover. Bit of natural mottling to vellum. Custom folding cloth chemise and slipcase. A very good copy.Great Poems Series No. 6. "In 1886 C.R. Ashbee established the Guild of Handicraft at Essex House London. Around the same time Ashbee created the Essex House Press. The Essex House Press published its first book in 1898. The work of the press was very much a part of the Arts and Crafts Movement. Ashbee continually linked the aims of the press with those of John Ruskin and William Morris and described the object of the movement as “making useful things…making them well and…making them beautiful.†The critics however were not so sure about the work of Essex House Press calling it “articraftiness.†Later booklovers came to admire much of its work. Some of the presses and some of the workmen for Essex House Press came from the Kelmscott Press after its demise in 1897 following the death of William Morris. Ashbee designed his own typeface called “Endeavor†for the press. In 1902 the press moved to Glouscestershire. The Essex House Press closed in 1910 having produced more than seventy titles." Tear in tissue guard.L'Estampe Moderne was published monthly between 1897 and 1899 at the Imprimerie Champenois of Paris. Each edition cost 3.50 francs and contained four original lithographic prints in wrappers designed by Mucha. Around two thousand of each of the 24 fascicles were produced bringing affordable prints largely in an Art Nouveau style to the masses.It is not to be confused with another publication of the same name which was published over five fascicles between November 1895 and March 1896 by Loÿs Delteil. Edition of 500 copies of which 200 were reserved for Isma'il Pasha known as Ismail the Magnificent 1830 – 1895 was the Khedive of Egypt and Sudan from 1863 to 1879 when he was removed at the behest of the United Kingdom. He was miffed at the credit Lesseps received and had this portrait removed from those 200 copies. The album is a collection of watercolors from life following and commemorating the inauguration of the Suez Canal from the ceremonies of 16th November 1869 up to the crossing between the 17th - 20thNovember. . . . Ferdinand Marie Vicomte de Lesseps GCSI 1805 – 1894 was a French diplomat and later developer of the Suez Canal which in 1869 joined the Mediterranean and Red Seas substantially reducing sailing distances and times between Europe and East Asia.Édouard Riou 1833 – 1900 was a French illustrator who illustrated six novels by Jules Verne as well as several other well-known works. Brunet VII 510;Blackmer 611 L'auteur 1838-1914 est à la fois historien orientaliste journaliste et secrétaire de Ferdinand de Lesseps.En 1854 il devient cadre de la Compagnie du Canal de Suez.Eugène Cicéri a réalisé quelques paysages en Afrique du Nord qui lui valent d'être aussi classé parmi les orientalistes. Seuls 500 exemplaires ont été publiés; parmi ceux ci 200 ont été réservés pour Ismaïl Pacha Vice Roi d'd'Égypte.
