‎The Land of Oranges‎

‎S. l. Los Angeles CA: California Fruit Growers Exchange 1932. Softcover. First edition thus; 5 3/4 x 4 1/4; pp. 1-12; chromolithographed wraps; small nicks to tips of spine and corners; small closed cut to bottom edge of front wrap; illustrated with b & w drawings and two tables; very good or better condition. A charming coloring book for children it told the story of Betty and Billy visiting their Uncle Jim who lives on a ranch in California and grows orange trees. Kids were supposed to read the story and color the illustrations with crayons and water colors. The booklet also contained height and weight charts for keeping records of the development of its little owners and a list of good health rules. A sad fact of the times was that the prevalent reality of the California citriculture was that it completely relied on immigrant minority groups and more specifically Chinese Japanese and Mexican workers while literature and art portrayed the industry as always and only involving white people including the front wrap illustration of the current book which showed a white father and his two children gazing contentedly down rows of orange trees. Frederick Augustus Lucas 1852 - 1929 was a prominent naturalist a major figure in the Great American Museum Movement Curator in Chief of the Brooklyn Museum and Director of the Museum of Natural History. Some of the letters addressed the Secretary and the Curator of the Smithsonian Institute in an angry indignant and incredulous tone complaining about Lucas' disregard of their fantastic discoveries of the natural world which had been previously brought to his attention. One memorable rant accompanied by an original photograph of the bone in question stated: "Dear Sir I acknowledge the return of skeleton but cannot sign receipt sent "as the breast-bone of a horse" The reason I sent the skeleton to you was that I believed that employers were fully competent to discharge their duties. I would suggest that you pump the whisky out of Lucas and send him to the lunatic asylum or Keely Institute." Another one addressed "Pro. Lucas" described in great detail with manuscript drawings a strange skull which Lucas had suggested belonged to a sheep refuting his opinion and asking for a closer examination. A third letter long and winded read: "Dear Sir Lucas.Sometime ago I read about you having an article in a paper about a large animal known by the name of Dinosaur. Your article was the first thing that I ever read about this monster." Other letters speculate about minerals fossils an "incredible petrified tree" etc. and the last one is a request for information about a Taxidermy examination and possible employment. ‎The "OXO" Cook Book‎

‎London: OXO Limited 1920. Softcover. First edition presumed n. d. ca 1920; 7 x 4 3/4; pp. 16; illustrated stiff wraps; a small spot and minor age-toning to margins; mild wear to edges; brown and beige in-line illustrations; very good condition. Possibly one of the earliest OXO cooking booklets it contained recipes by various women that had been mailed to the company as an expression of the cooks' great satisfaction in using OXO cubes in their cooking and included such delightful concoctions such as OXO Blanc Mange OXO Devilled Bananas and OXO Jambon Savory. The OXO beaf stock cubes were first introduced in 1910 as a cheaper version to the original product which had been a viscous liquid containing only meat extract and 4% salt. Presumably the brand name OXO was derived from "ox." The OXO products greatly expanded from those early days are still very popular to this day. London: OXO Limited paperback books‎

It had been an anti-Socialist government that existed from April until December of 1918 after the pro-Socialist Central Council of the Ukrainian People's Republic was dispersed and the anti-Bolshevik provisional government of Hetman of Ukraine Pavlo Skoropads'kii 1873 – 1945 was instituted. His regime was short-lived as he and his troops could not resist the Directorate's the provisional collegiate revolutionary state committee of the Ukrainian People's Republic forces led by Simon Petliura and he abdicated his position as Hetman on December 14 1918. The majority of the current journal was dedicated to Pavlo Skoropads'kii and his son Danilo Skoropads'kii 1904 - 1957 - a politician and supporter of his father's political endeavors. Most of it is in Ukrainian but the last two pages contain a curious article in English by one Joseph Bilovus which ardently supports The Hetmanite cause. Nikolai Berdiaev 1874 – 1948 was one of Russia's best known religious philosophers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and a leading theoretician for the Russian Social Democratic Party. An article of his in 1913 criticising the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church earned him a charge of blasphemy the punishment for which was exile to Siberia for life. The Revolution prevented the sentence from taking effect and he was allowed to continue writing and lecturing. Though consequently his dissatisfaction with the Bolsheviks' regime got him arrested several times and eventually resulted in his expulsion from Russia in 1922 on the so called "Philosophers' Ship" - a selected group of 160 prominent writers and intellectuals whose ideas the Bolshevik government found objectionable. In exile first in Berlin and later in Paris Berdiaev was editor in chief of the YMCA-Press founder of the above-mentioned Russian Religious Philosophical Academy and editor of the periodical Put’ “The Way†- to which the current pamphlet was published as a supplement. Georgii Fedotov Vladimir Il'in and Sergei Bulgakov were also prominent exiled theologians and philosophers who worked closely with Berdiaev in Paris. Paris: YMCA Press paperback books‎
