CICEROS ROSCIANA AMERINA Im Prosarhythmus Rekonstruiert
Bump to top corner of front board. Very light shelfwear. Else Fine. ; Palingenesia 99; 178 pages; German text.

THE LANGUAGES OF PARADISE Race, Religion, and Philology in the Nineteenth Century
Former owner's name in pencil and blindstamp to ffep. Else book is fine. DJ spine sunned. ; The comparative study of languages was inspired by Renaissance debates over what language was spoken in the Garden of Eden. By the eighteenth century scholars were persuaded that European languages shared a common ancestor. With the adoption of positivist, “scientific” methods in the nineteenth century, the hunt for the language of Eden and the search for a European Ursprache diverged. Yet the desire to reconcile historical causality with divine purpose remained. Because the Indo-European languages clearly had a separate line of descent from the biblical tongues, the practitioners of the new science of philology (many of whom had received their linguistic training from the Church) turned their scholarship to the task of justifying the ascendance of European Christianity to the principal role in Providential history. To accomplish this they invented a pair of concepts? Aryan and Semitic? That by the end of the century had embarked on ideological and political careers far outside philology. Supposed characteristics of the respective languages were assigned to the peoples who spoke them: thus the Semitic peoples (primarily the Jews) were, like their language, passive, static, and immobile, while the Aryans (principally Western Europeans) became the active, dynamic Chosen People of the future. Olender traces the development of these concepts through the work of J. G. Herder, Ernest Renan, Friedrich Max Müller, Adolphe Pictet, Rudolph Grau, and Ignaz Goldziher. He shows that, despite their different approaches, each of these men struggled more or less purposefully “to join romanticism with positivism in an effort to preserve a common allegiance to the doctrines of Providence. ”; 228 pages

A HITTITE GLOSSARY Words of Known or Conjectured Meaning with Sumerian and Akkadian Words Occuring in Hittite Texts,
Former owner's name in pen to ffep. Light rubbing to boards. Spine is heavily spotted and discolored. ; The Hittite language is the dead language once spoken by the Hittites, a people who once created an empire centered on ancient Hattusa (modern Bogazköy) in north-central Anatolia (modern Turkey). The language was used from approximately 1600 BC (and probably before) to 1100 BC. There is some attestation that Hittite and related languages were still spoken for a few hundred years after that. Hittite is one of the earliest attested Indo-European languages, although marked differences in its structure and phonology have led some philologists to argue that it should be classified as a sister language to the Indo-European languages, rather than a daughter language. ; William Dwight Whitney Linguistic Series; 192 pages

THE LIFE AND WORK OF FRANCIS WILLEY KELSEY Archaeology, Antiquity, and the Arts
1 corner very lightly bumped. Else fine. ; President of the Archaeological Institute of America, professor at the University of Michigan from 1889 to 1927, and president of the American Philological Association, Francis Kelsey was crucially involved in the founding or growth of major educational institutions. He came to maturity in a period of great technological change in communications, transportation, and manufacturing. Kelsey took full advantage of such innovations in his ceaseless drive to promote education for all, to further the expansion of knowledge, and to champion the benefits of the study of antiquity. A vigorous traveler around the United States, Europe, and the Mediterranean, Kelsey strongly believed in the value of personally viewing sites ancient and modern and collecting artifacts that could be used by the new museums and universities that were springing up in the United States. This collecting habit put him in touch with major financiers of the day, including Charles Freer, Andrew Carnegie, and J. P. Morgan, as he sought their help for important projects. Drawing heavily on Kelsey's daily diaries now held at the University of Michigan's Bentley Historical Library, John Griffiths Pedley gives us a biography that records the wide-ranging activities of a gifted and energetic scholar whose achievements mirrored the creative and contributive innovations of his contemporary Americans. ; 468 pages

HOMERIC RHYTHM A Philosophical Study
In a follow-up to his previous Homeric studies, noted classicist Paolo Vivante explores Homer's verse, highlighting rhythm rather than metre. Rhythmical qualities, he argues, constitute the force of the verse? For example, in the way the words take position and in the way each pause hints suspense, producing an immediate sense of time. Vivante's main concern is not with the techniques or rules of the verse-composition, but more philosophically with verse itself as a fundamental form of human expression. This study will be of interest to both students and scholars. ; Contributions to the Study of World Literature 82; 176 pages
