This rare edition of the New Testament printed in 1794 at Boston for a consortium of booksellers aimed to provide a distinctly American printed Bible as an alternative to the British printings being imported and thus included the Great Seal of the United States prominently displayed on the title page. Thus suggesting that even at the dawn of the American republic certain clauses of the Bill of Rights were subject to fluid interpretation. This is an early appearance of the Great Seal of the United States and is the only instance where it was used in conjunction with a patently religious work. Copies are recorded at AAS and Duke. Fine copy. 4to recent red quarter morocco period style by Philip Dusel marbled paper boards gilt rules decorations and lettering. A satirical review of an imaginary exhibition by real artists at the Royal Academy dedicated to Joshua Reynolds a founder and the first president of the Academy. The anonymous author makes fun of the pretentions of the Academy and its guidelines in choosing members. In the preface Petit Mot Pour Rire "a small joke" Academy founder Johann Zoffany is subject to a particularly unfriendly tale of how he acquired his fame. This is followed by the review of the fictitious paintings with prefatory remarks on the "revolution of taste in the Polite Arts" "the love of novelty is particularly remarkable . . ." and an addenda with an assessment of the new quarters of the Royal Academy at New Somerset House where it moved in 1780. From an edition limited to 580 copies this is one of 515 copies in the "Colonial Edition" printed for John Howell Books by the Grabhorn Press and containing an essay by Edwin Grabhorn on typography in America in 1776. This volume contains an original leaf from a copy of the Aitken Bible one of the most celebrated American bibles being the first complete English Bible printed in America. During the colonial era the monopoly on printing English bibles belonged to the Royal Printer and the colonies were supplied entirely with bibles printed in England. The only Bible printed in the British colonies in America was the famous Eliot Indian Bible in Algonquian issued in Cambridge in 1661-63 and reprinted in 1680-85. With the Revolution this monopoly naturally ended and the embargo on goods from England acted to create a shortage. Aitken a Philadelphia printer undertook the task producing the New Testament in 1781 and the Old Testament in 1782. On completion he petitioned the Continental Congress for their endorsement and received it in September 1782. Author of "Ben Bolt" New Jersey Congressman and Enemy of Poe. Thomas Dunn English 1819-1902 was a proilific author of poems ballads and novels; he also server two terms in the U.S. Congress as a Representative from New Jersey; but his fame as a writer rests on the ballad in wrote in 1843 "Ben Bolt." First published in Nathaniel Parker Willis' magazine NEW YORK MIRROR "Ben Bolt" was set to music many times and became very popular especiallly in the version set to a tune by Nelson Kneass. In his note appended to this transcription of the poem English writes:<br/><br/> "The foregoing stanzas are as they originally appeared in Willis & Morris's NEW YORK NEW MIRROR in the year 1843. Though they have been set to music eight tiimes the only popular melody was the one take from a German air by Kneass. The words there - three stanzas only being taken - are very much mutilated."<br/><br/>"It was hugely successful at the time but had a new lease of life as the song that Trilby O'Ferrall sings in the novel TRILBY 1894 by George du Maurier. It is described in the novel as an 'unsophisticated little song' but when Trilby performs it under the influence of the sinister hypnotist Svengali it reawakens a 'cosmic vision of the beauty and sadness of things' in her former lover Little Billee." The Proprietors' Dispute: A gathering of five important pamphlets dealing with the acrimonious dispute between two groups of partners of the Covent Garden Theatre - usually referred to as the "Proprietors' Dispute."

Fine copies. 5 vols 4to uniformly bound with attractive tan paper spines period-style and sprinkled paper boards with manuscript titles on the spines. A gathering of five important pamphlets dealing with the acrimonious dispute between two groups of partners of the Covent Garden Theatre - usually referred to as the "Proprietors' Dispute" - a quarrel that began in 1767 when two of the partners Thomas Harris and John Rutherford attempted to insert mistresses - particularly one Mrs. Lessingham - into the theatre company and have them cast in unsuitable roles. Harris and Rutherford squared off with George Colman and William Powell the opposing partners for over a year of accusations and counter accusations that resulted in a legal squabble and a classic pamphlet war. The contents of the pamphlets are informative not only with regard to the dispute itself but they also document everyday operations of the Covent Garden Theatre and theatrical management of the period in general. With the exception of some minor foxing browning and stains the pamphlets are in very good condition with wide margins. With half-title. ¶ A defense of Admiral John Byng 1704-1757 of the Royal Navy who was on trial for treason based on dubious charges. He was found guilty and was tragically executed the following year. Shebbearre 1709-1788 a pamphleteer and contrarian wrote numerous tracts during the political crises of 1755-56 attacking the misadventures of the English government abroad. None according to Shebbearre were more blatantly wrongheaded than the trial of John Byng. Shebbearre's perceived lack of patriotism landed him in prison and he was roundly criticized and lampooned by the likes of Johnson Smollett and Griffith. Johnson eventually sided with Shebbearre in the Byng matter and approvingly reviewed An Appeal to the People in the Literary Magazine in October 1756. ESTC attributes An Appeal to John Byng himself and he did write pamphlets in his own defense but both Hanley and Eddy show convincing evidence that this was indeed by Shebbearre. <br/><br/> London: Printed for J. English an editor and prolific author of poetry and prose composed the poem "Ben Bolt" and wrote a play entitled The Mormons. But he is perhaps best remembered for the fistfight that ended his friendship with Poe. This resulted from the public scandle revolving around letters sent to Poe by Elizabeth Ellett and Frances Sargent Osgood. "This association with Poe remains the chief source of scholarly interest in English. Their war of words figures as a major event in biographies of Poe and English's account of the poet have provided valuable information about Poe's sensitivity to alcohol and the possibility of his drug use" American National Biography. An interesting and instructive look at how the Japanese learned English in the generation following Admiral Perry's opening of Japan. 2 volumes in 1 oblong fukurotoji 5.5" x 8" approx. 198 french-fold pages sewn in the Japanese manner in contemporary and almost certainly original brown paper wrappers; minor working and wear but in all a very good and striking example of a Japanese student's workbook for the attainment of English. The book has apparently been copied from American primers published by A. S. Barnes in New York in 1857 and Sargent's School Primer Boston 1859; both contain a variety of reading and spelling lessons "especially adapted to the capacity and taste of young children. It is hoped that it will proved sic valuable introduction to the national series of school readers prepared by Richard G. Parker." Both Parker's and Sargent's primers were available in bi-lingual editions in the Japanese market. Might this be the manuscript from which a printer might have used to publish the Japanese editions Throughout the English text which has been carefully written in ink is often translated interlinearly in red ink with Japanese characters creating an attractive visual appearance on the page. Included are 3 pages of alphabets simple sentences often in rhyme "A cart for me / to ride and see / A ship at sea / with you and me." <br/><br/> unknown books
