Solidly bound in half red morocco with attractive gilt spine. All edges marbled. Some rubbing to extremities. Corner tips to the boards neatly patched. Francis Sylvester Mahony 1804-1866 - Irish priest and journalist who served as the Roman Correspondent for the London Daily News. He also wrote for Fraser's Magazine under the name Father Prout. The Reliques of Father Prout an interesting collection of ballads epigrams satire and classical allusions etc. were first published in 1836 with 18 plates by Maclise. Includes 12 hand colored floral plates and 12 engravings. Instead of the Bell Flower plate and the Shipwreck plate listed in the register there is an extra Zuleika plate and an extra Lathyrus Purpurea plate hence 2 of each. A number of the engravings are by W.H. Bartlett and depict early American scenery - i.e. "View of Meridith New Hampshire" "Narrows from Fort Hamilton" "Schuylkill Waterworks Philadelphia" "Capitol at Washington" "View from Mount Ida" New York. A plate titled "The Baths and City of Tiberias" in Syria is also by Bartlett. The first plate depicting the editor is engraved by A.H. Ritchie. Contents also include a number of interesting articles such as "Three ways of managing a wife" How to manage a husband" "Sensibility and sensuality" The Women of modern Italy" "Physical education of children" and many others. Bound in thin leather or a faux-leather with gilt floral and wreath decorations on the covers and on the spine. Head and tail cap corners neatly restored. Spine a bit faded. Areas of rubbing. Signatures sprung from use but firmly attached; pages soiled and with some contemporary markings; old repair to the spine else the binding is in very good condition. Ownership name of Dan Smith dated 1828 and later 'Dan Smith His Book'. The New Testament has a separate title page. In this copy there is a short note pinned to its verso listing the births of members of the McNees family in the late nineteenth century. Reputedly the first Bible printed west of the Allegheny River and the first Bible in English printed west of the Allegheny Mountains. A well used copy but in good condition. Very scarce. Edinburgh: Oliver & Boyd 1818. Hardcover. Very good. 12mo. 108pp. Publishers original drab brown cloth; upper board blocked in gilt with title within a floral design. Ink name on front pastedown. Cloth soiled binding lightly shaken gilt rubbed else a very good copy. The date of publication is taken from the Advertisement page 4. This seems to be the first Oliver and Boyd printing of a hieroglyphic Bible and the second Edinburgh printing after the Doig and Sterling edition of 1814. The accepted publicaton date for this Bible is 1818; three other known copies are known to have been issued either in quarter leather and marbled paper boards or in printed card covers. Our copy is in what is clearly publisher's cloth with gilt blocked on the upper board. This combination is unknown before 1826. It is likely then that the textblock while printed earlier was bound after 1826. Exceedingly scarce. Protected in a custom clamshell box. Oliver & Boyd hardcover
