Beirut: Palestine National Liberation Movement 1971. 42 x 29 cm. Folded. Numerous black-and-white photographic illustrations. Rare and remarkable periodical published by the Palestine National Liberation Movement or Fatah. This was a revolutionary group and later a political party founded in 1957 by Yasser Arafat 1929-2004 Khalil al-Wazir 1935-1988 and 3 or 4 others. The movement published numerous periodicals and pamphlets between 1968-1972 but Fateh is the most important one. Originally published in Arabic it was also issued in English from 1969 bi-weekly in French from 1970 monthly and in Italian from 1971 bi-weekly. We have not been able to find any other English issues of this periodical for sale anywhere else.The name of the group Fatah is an acronym in reverse for "Harakat al-Tahrir al-Watani al-Filastini" the Arabic translation of "Palestine National Liberation Movement". The intention of the founders was to create an organisation that was independent of governments and political parties with the goal to liberate Palestine through low-intensity guerilla warfare. It was part of several armed fights with Israeli and Jordan forces during the 1960s and 70s. Fatah modelled itself after the revolutionary groups of Algeria Vietnam and Cuba. On page 9 of the present issue of Fateh a large photo has been printed of a group of protesters holding signs with the images of the leaders of these revolutions which is a clear message to the reader.The present issue of Fateh contains numerous articles with news from or about Palestine and the movement. It was printed a few months after Black September the bloody clash between Fatah and the Jordanian army in 1970 during which thousands of Palestines were either killed or expelled from Jordan. The first few pages of the periodical are dedicated to this event and other clashes between the two groups that resulted from it. Other articles discuss a 10-hour battle near Tel Aviv the relationship between America and Israel and injustices against Palestinians. Of particular interest are the three powerful full-page illustrations. They were designed in 1970 and issued separately as posters. The first image of a rifle with an olive branch was designed by Natheer Naba'a who is only known for his posters for Fateh. The second image called "stolen smile" shows a photo of a group of determined children and was designed by Jassem el Zubeidy who is only known for this design. The last image is an illustration of a Palestinian woman with a moving text about Palestine designed by Palestinian artist Kamal Boullata 1942-2019.The periodical is somewhat browned and inkstained and the edges are slightly frayed. 1830. Contemporary navy blue morocco with the title lettered in gold on spine marbled endpapers. 4to 21.5 x 27 cm. With 2 folding tables 17 lines to the page written in red and black ink. A unique handwritten vocabulary and phrasebook of English and Arabic from the first half of the 19th century. This meticulously prepared manuscript is written in the fashion of a printed book opening with a title page and ending with an index of topics. It is divided into four main sections: nouns adjectives verbs and example sentences. The vocabulary especially in the nouns section is arranged by subjects which include such interesting headings as "Druggist" "Painter" "Merchant" "Cities" "the Bride's Paraphernalia" "Precious Jewels" "War" "The Church" "Clerical Vestments" "Ecclesiastical Degrees & Kinds of Sin" "Festivals" and "Monks their prayers and their dress". Presumably the dictionary was created to help a traveller or merchant who may have had an association with the Church. The final section offers an interesting selection of phrases and sheds some light on the experience of foreign language learning in the early 19th century. The phrases are a mixture of sentences that would be useful in daily life and such as would be included to practice the words from the vocabulary. Examples include: "We roasted a lamb and ate the whole of it and drank wine with it"; "I descended from above with the youth my enemy"; "I shot the bear in the water and he sank"; and "Why dost thou scratch thy head and spit in fire". As a cheat sheet for Arabic grammar the author includes two folding tables of Arabic verb tenses and conjugations. Overall a curious example of a 19th-century Arabic vocabulary and phrasebook.With a presentation note in English indicating it was a Christmas gift in 1881 presented by G. W. Bernard Esq. Handsomely bound in contemporary full burgundy morocco sides framed and decorated in blind spine with gilt-decorated raised bands compartments tooled in blind gilt lettering gilt inner dentelles green watered silk endpapers and doublures original brass clasps all edges gilt. Text printed in two columns. Inner board with gilt presentation: 'A tribute of respect and esteem from the parishioners of Stoke Next Guildford to the Rev. C. Neat. For his faithful and much valued ministrations among them. 1835.' Some light rubbing to exterior contents clean and unmarked generally a very handsome presentation copy given to the Rev. Charles Neat who met with an unlucky end just three years after his parishioners presented him with this thoughtful gift see below. Royal Cornwall Gazette 6 July 1838 Death of the Rev. Charles Neat MELANCHOLY AND FATAL ACCIDENT.-On Tuesday last the Rev. Charles Neat was proceeding from Penzance to St. Ives to hold a Church Missionary Meeting; when near Halse-town the horse he was driving took fright and the reverend gentleman with his servant was thrown out from the gig. Mr. Neat we regret to say fell on his head and fractured the base of his skull and received other very serious injuries. The accident occurred about five o'clock and shortly after the Rev. Mr. Havart of St. Ives arrived with medical assistance.- Every thing that skill could devise and kindness dictate was promptly done; but was of no avail. Mr. Neat lingered in a state of insensibility till half past one o'clock on Wednesday morning when it pleased God to take him to his reward. He had preached on Sunday afternoon in St. Ives Church to a very large congregation; and very many were preparing to attend the Missionary Meeting on Tuesday evening when this mysterious providence prevented their assembling. Mr. Neat has left a widow and one son to deplore his untimely loss. The servant received no injury. The horse ran into the town about a mile and a half distant but did no further mischief. Royal Cornwall Gazette 13 July 1838 ST IVES. The funeral of the Rev. Chas. Neat whose melancholy death we announced last week took place on Tuesday the 10th instant. His remains were borne to the grave by ten of the most respectable Gentlemen of St. Ives; and followed by his afflicted son and many of the neighbouring clergy. Upwards of 3000 persons were present and with that decorum which a people so religious and right-minded would be sure to exhibit upon an occasion so solemn and touching. The beautiful service of our church was read with great feeling and propriety by the Rev. Wm. Havart the perpetual curate of St. Ives. Among the clergymen present to pay their last tribute of respect we observed the Rev. T. Vyvyan of Penzance; U. Tonkin of Lelant; H. E. Graham of Ludgvan; H. Rogers of Camborne; - Townsend of Marazion; H. Pinnock of Madron; Zennor; F. Bazeley of St. Dominick; Browne of Penzance &c. &c.-Mr. Neat was 44 years of age; although many of our readers may have considered him much older; his long residence abroad having considerably altered his appearance. He has published several articles and monographs on Spanish typography as well as on other aspects of printing and book history. The illustrator Elies Plana is a Barcelona based book artist and printer who has been working in the field for the last 15 years. After studying fine arts at the art school of Olot he joined the workshop of his father Miquel Plana. He learned the craft and the different techniques by helping and assisting his father in the production of over 100 fine books. He not only learned the love for the books but also for the craftsmanship involved in every stage of producing them. In 2008 he started his own projects that vary from editions book prints and special commissions. He works with different techniques from linocuts and woodcut to etching and uses lead and wood types to print the texts<br /> <br /> Bound with marbled paper boards with brownish orange spine and cover edges. Title in black to spine and with a title lable affixed to the front cover. The book is printed ono Fredigoni paper at Gràfiques Marti. The text has been composed with the font families Linotype Didot and Adob Garamond. Housed in a slipcase covered with the same orange cloth as the book's spine which is in turn housed in a brown cardboard folder with brown fabric ties. It is in fine condition. [BINDING - ENGLISH - EMBROIDERY].
Embroidered bookbinding.
England London 1650. Size when opened: 17 x 25 cm. Ivory silk satin richly decorated in a colourful floral design with goldwork metal sequins and clusters of seed pearls the text "voir nostre domine" embroidered on the front and back. Exquisitely embroidered 17th-century English binding with a colourful floral design comparable to the very few silk bindings decorated in London during the years ca. 1625-1650 that have survived. The design which is identical on both sides showcases a crowned Tudor rose with its stem in a vase surrounded by flowers foliage and ornamented leaves with the text "voir nostre domine" at the top. It has been embroidered onto a base of ivory silk satin lined with white linen and decorated with four blue painted ornaments on the interior. The work has been executed with an exquisite pallet of green blue pink red orange white brown and gold threads brilliantly contrasting the ivory white of the base fabric.All sections and shapes have been beautifully outlined with gold thread fastened with red silk. The hearts of the roses the crowns the vases and the initials V and D of the text have been decorated with small pearls. Little round sequins are scattered in the foliage filling the negative space. At the interior two pockets have been sewn intended for the insertion of a book probably a Psalter of ca. 16.5 x 10 cm or 12mo format.Some sections are a little bit faded the embroidery on the spine and around the edges is partly detached missing a few pearls and sequins and likely some goldwork the silk is slightly water stained on the interior. Otherwise an extremely rare specimen of a very richly decorated silk bookbinding in very good condition.l Cf.
