‎HEMINGWAY Ernest.‎

‎Holograph revisions to the typescript short story "A High Wind-less Night in Jamaica" by his lover Jane Mason.‎

‎Havana : n.p. c.mid-1930s. He came to think of Jane Mason as his very own Zelda 7 pages quarto triple-spaced on seven sheets of white paper. Housed in a custom-made dark brown morocco solander box. Pale brown staining mostly at left margin of each sheet rust marks from paper clips with some pencilled revisions by Jane Mason one on verso of page 6. On the verso of the first leaf alongside a sketch of a bare foot is a pencil sketch of a bearded figure wearing a cap of the type favoured by Hemingway the face of which is scribbled over. Remarkable survival that memorialises Hemingway's infatuation with the young and glamorous socialite Jane Mason who was to become the model for the character of Helene Bradley in To Have and Have Not 1937 his last experimental work from the Key West years. The couple first met in the autumn of 1931 when Hemingway and his wife Pauline were returning to New York from Paris on the Ile de France. Mason "was the twenty-two-year-old wife of G. Grant Mason the head of Pan American Airways in Cuba and the owner of a beautifully situated estate in Jaimanitas west of Havana. With her slender but curvy body and her strawberry blond hair which she parted in the middle and pulled away from her oval face she was the most beautiful woman whom Hemingway had ever gone after. A native of Tuxedo Park New York and a graduate of Briarcliff she had made her debut in Washington D.C. just before her impulsive marriage to Mason. Dancing drinking and deep-sea fishing were among her current enthusiasms and so was pigeon shooting at the Club de Cazadores a sport in which few other women engaged. Conceivably Hemingway came to think of Jane Mason as his very own Zelda except that he proposed to make her well by giving her lessons in marlin fishing and by telling her over and over that she wasn't crazy Mason suffered with manic depression" Kenneth S. Lynn Hemingway 1987 p. 404. With Hemingway's encouragement Jane began writing fiction. In "A High Wind-less Night in Jamaica" the title echoes Richard Hughes's A High Wind in Jamaica 1929 she draws upon Hemingway's dictum of "write what you know" and tells the story from the point of view of an American woman of a thoroughly unpleasant group of colonial Jamaicans drinking and dancing on a hotel veranda. Hemingway has corrected punctuation changed verbs tightened-up phrases and in general polished the story. His longest revision occurs near the end where Jane has written about her lead character: "I felt strangely sorry for her despite the fact that in England she was the type who always terrified me and to whom I am generally rather rude." Hemingway has revised the part in italics to read: ".one would not have felt sorry for her but simply classed her as a bitch without implying any condemnation." The story was submitted to The New Yorker but turned down; it appears to remain unpublished. Havana (?): n.p. unknown‎

‎Gattorno.‎

‎Havana: Ucar Garcia Y Cia 1935. From Gattorno to Sicre Quarto 254 x 192 mm. Recent green cloth gilt titles to spine on red morocco label. With the original front wrapper bound in. Text in two columns in English and Spanish. Lithograph portrait and 37 lithographic illustrations by Gattorno. Closed tear to top edge of front wrapper with creases to extremities a little dampstaining affecting edges of preliminaries and first few pages small loss to colophon leaf illustrations and text clean. A very good copy of a fragile publication. First edition sole printing number 442 of 460 copies of this scarce Hemingway publication championing the art of Antonio Gattorno 1904-1980. Presentation copy inscribed by the artist to Juan Jose Sicre: "Para J. J. Sicre su amigo Gattorno Santa Amalia 15/6/1935". Juan José Sicre 1898-1974 was a Cuban sculptor and painter who along with Gattorno introduced a distinctly European style of modern art to Cuba. Having both studied in Europe in the 1920s Gattorno and Sicre fell under the influence of artists such as Picasso and particularly for Gattorno Paul Gauguin whose rural primitivism helped develop an interest in the rural poor and an increased sense of nationalism. On returning to Cuba Sicre became the professor of sculpture at the Academy of San Alejandro and contributed to the avant garde magazine Revista de Avance in order to establish a new form of Cuban national identity in the arts. Through this sense of national pride Sicre became "the most famous Cuban sculptor of his time" Bethell p. 413. It is likely that Gattorno met Hemingway as early as 1929 when Gattorno was living in France as part of El Grupo de Montparnasse a contingent of Spanish and Latin American artists and writers who embodied the European modern art movement of the 1920s. Through the influence of these writers Gattorno's art changed conspicuously with Sicre expressing concern that Gattonro had become all "too modern" by embracing a European romantic conception of Cuban national identity. But as Hemingway notes in his foreword to this edition Gattorno had undergone a transformation from "a Cuban painter" into "a painter for the world . Now it is time for him to leave Cuba again but he will always return to it where he is painting". Hemingway's patronage of Gattorno extended far beyond the foreword to this monograph. Hemingway "was well aware of the magnetic effect his name might have on such a publication" and sent two copies of the book to the editor of US magazine Esquire Arnold Gingrich encouraging him to publish eight full-colour reproductions of Gattorno's work in the 1936 edition Baker p. 264. Within a year Gattorno was invited to hold a solo exhibition in New York paving the way for Gattorno's success in 1937 when he was commissioned by the Bacardi Company to paint a mural in their offices in the Empire State Building. ‎Arnold Lloyd R. ; Ernest Hemingway‎

‎High on the Wild with Hemingway A Pictorial Recollection‎

‎Caldwell: Caxton Printers. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. 1968. First Edition. Hardcover. 343 pages; Clean and tight in original cloth binding with pictorial endpapers in bright fresh dustjacket red NOT faded. A pictorial recollection of "Papa" Hemingway by a close friend and photographer. Spans the years from 1939 to 1961 highlighting Hemingway's time in Idaho. Lloyd "Pappy" Arnold was Sun Valley Resort's first official photographer. Averell Harriman of the Union Pacific which owned the resort lured Ernest Hemingway and his soon to be third wife Martha Gellhorn to visit Sun Valley in September 1939. "Pappy" Arnold was assigned to accompany Hemingway on hunting and fishing expeditions and other excursions in the area. Arnold himself a serious outdoorsman introduced Hemingway to another hunter Gene Van Guilder and to the area's best guide Taylor "Beartracks" Williams. Later fall of 1941 Williams introduced Hemingway to the "Old Timer" who related to Hemingway and Arnold his numerous old tales of Custer's death at the Greasy Grass and the Wagonbox fight where dozens of woodcutters fought two thousand Sioux. This book of wonderful photographs and vivid reminiscences is a well-spring for Hemingway enthusiasts. . Caxton Printers hardcover‎

‎Ernie: Hemingway's Sister "Sunny" Remembers‎

‎New York: Crown 1975 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 10 1/2h x 7w. A real nice clean unmarked 146 page first edition hardcover. Dust jacket has some general wear and still looks good. Has more than 130 black & white photos scattered throughout. Ernie is a simple recollection of the Hemingway family life with emphasis on moments of sharing and intimacy as seen by an adoring favorite sister. As such this intimate memoir provides an authentic insight into Hemingway's formative years. This is a collection of warm memories about a time and a place and about a much-loved big brother. In Sunny's case there is hero worship for a very special sibling who taught her to hunt and fish who introduced her to John Dos Passos Alexander Calder and other notables and who protected and encouraged her. Sunny writes perceptively of her mother and father whose influence was strong on Hemingway and of their long summer vacations at Walloon Lake in northern Michigan which later formed the backdrop for Hemingway's Nick Adams stories. . ‎Hemingway Ernest‎

‎For Whom The Bell Tolls‎

‎Charles Scribner’s Sons New York 1940; First Edition; 8vo 471 pages; publisher’s beige cloth; black spine titles over a red field. Hemingway’s dramatic semi-autobiographical novel of fate courage and death in the Spanish Civil War released to considerable critical acclaim and recommended for the 1941 Pulitzer prize though none was awarded that year. Source of the Paramount 1943 Oscar nominated film of the same name directed by Sam Wood and starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman. Hemingway dedicated this book to comrade lover and indefatigable war correspondent Martha Gellhorn whom he married the following year. Very Good pastedown margins lightly tanned. In the second issue dust jacket which bears photographer Lloyd Arnold’s credit beneath the rear panel photo publisher’s price of $2.75 and Henry Seidel Canby blurb on the front flap. Arnold was chief photographer for the Sun Valley Co. and its celebrated Idaho hunting lodge then in its infancy which was frequented by Ernest and Mary Hemingway. He and his wife Tillie became such fast friends and hunting companions of the Hemingways that the two couples even purchased adjoining cemetery plots in Ketchum. However when Jack Hemingway’s wife died and later his daughter the Arnolds relinquished both their spaces for the Hemingway family burials. In 2005 after Tillie’s death at age 99 both the Arnolds’ remains were moved from their respective California and Iowa locations and reinterred at the Ketchum cemetery as near as possible to their old friends. Lloyd Arnold’s 1969 book "Riding High With Hemingway" details many of the Arnolds’ personal experiences with the Hemingways. Dust jacket Very Good with light to moderate wear at the corners and spine panel extremities. No price clipping no ownership signatures or any other markings of any kind. Text clean crisp bright binding tight sound and square. Charles Scribner’s Sons hardcover‎
