Ernest Hemingway.
Across the River and into the Trees.
New York NY Charles Scribner's Sons 1950. Hardcover First Edition 1950; First Printing indicated. First Edition 1950; First Printing indicated. "A" on the copyright page and yellow lozenge on the backstrip of the DJ. Very Good in Poor DJ: Book shows indications of careful use; just a hint of wear to extremities; a bit of scuffing near the titles at the backstrip; considerable spine lean. Binding remains quite secure; text clean. DJ is split along the front hinge and at the outside edge of the front panel so that the DJ is now in three pieces held together only by the mylar cover; else in remarkably good shape: shows a couple of tears at the head of the backstrip; moderate wear to extremities and very mild rubbing; price $3.00 has not been clipped. NOT a Remainder Book-Club or Ex-Library. 8vo. 308pp. Black cloth boards with gilt signature on cover gilt lettering on spine. Photograph of Hemingway on back of DJ by Paul Radkai. Hardback with DJ. In the fall of 1948 Ernest Hemingway made his first extended visit to Italy in thirty years. His reacquaintance with Venice a city he loved provided the inspiration for Across the River and into the Trees the story of Richard Cantwell a war-ravaged American colonel stationed in Italy at the close of the Second World War and his love for a young Italian countess. A poignant bittersweet homage to love that overpowers reason to the resilience of the human spirit and to the worldweary beauty and majesty of Venice Across the River and into the Trees stands as Hemingway's statement of defiance in response to the great dehumanizing atrocities of the Second World War. Hemingway's last full-length novel published in his lifetime it moved John O'Hara in The New York Times Book Review to call him "the most important author since Shakespeare." In Our Time: Stories.
London UK Jonathan Cape 1926. Hardcover First Edition UK 1926 so stated. First Edition UK 1926 so stated. Good: Shows significant indications of use: The binding shows very slight lean; rubbing to the extremities has caused a little fraying at the front corner tips and at the head and heel of the backstrip which is lightly sunned blanching the olive toned background field so that the gilt titles which are bright enough somewhat more difficult to read than when the book was new and unblemished; some darkening soiling and rubbing overall and a small stain near the upper front corner; the top edge is a bit dusted and somewhat mottled and the bottom edge shows a small smudge; the pages have tanned somewhat due to aging. The binding remains secure; the text is clean. Overall remains a sturdy copy with a clean text. NOT a Remainder Book-Club or Ex-Library. 8vo. 7.6 x 5.4 x 1 inches. 248 pages. L'Envoy. Embossed Cape Logo at the middle of the rear panel. Weight: 14 ounces. Hardback: Lacks DJ. In Our Time is the first collection of short stories by Ernest Hemingway published by Boni & Liveright in New York in 1925. The title is taken from the English Book of Common Prayer "Give us peace in our time O Lord". It describes acts of war bullfighting and current events and was published without titles. A 1924 edition is known as "In Our Time" and published - without capitals - in Paris. That edition comprised 32 pages and 18 vignettes almost all of which became "interchapters" for the 1925 New York edition. Two "A Very Short Story" and "The Revolutionist" were expanded to short stories. Hemingway began with six prose vignettes commissioned by Ezra Pound for the The Little Review published in 1923. Upon publication the collection was recognized as a significant development in fiction for its spare language and oblique depictions of characters' emotions achieved through the distinctive style he termed the theory of omission; his Iceberg theory. Hemingway wrote 14 short stories for the 1925 New York volume including some of the better-known stories of his semi-autobiographical character Nick Adams such as "Indian Camp" "The Doctor and the Doctor's Wife" "The Three-Day Blow" and "Big Two-Hearted River". The stories' themes of alienation loss grief separation continue the work Hemingway started with the original six vignettes. In Our Time comprises 14 stories that are some of Hemingway's best short fiction. The first publication begins with "Indian Camp" and "The Doctor and the Doctor's Wife"; two stories linked thematically set in Michigan introducing Hemingway's autobiographical alter-ego Nick Adams. "The End of Something" describes the teenager Nick breaking up with a girl; "Three-Day Blow" shows him and a friend drinking and talking for three days at a lake. "The Battler" is about Nick meeting a prize-fighter on his way home from war. This is followed by "A Very Short Story" a World War I love story set in Italy; "Soldier's Home" is set in Kansas; and "The Revolutionist" is set in Italy. Three marriage stories follow: "Mr. and Mrs. Elliot" "Cat in the Rain" and "Out of Season". Nick reappears in "Cross Country Snow" set in Switzerland. "My Old Man" is set in Paris. The volume ends with the two-part Nick Adams story "Big Two-Hearted River" set in Michigan. Hemingway biographer James Mellow believes In Our Time is Hemingway's most experimental book in that it transcends a mere collection of stories and that it presents a "narrative form in which seemingly disconnected episodes and events made up a chronicle of events". He established the primary themes which he would return to during his career such as initiation rites and early love marriage problems disappointment in family life and the importance of male comradeship. The early vignettes or interchapters are about war bullfighting and crime all topics Hemingway would return to in later work. According to Cohen In Our Time is about a violent world a world of war suffering executions a world without romance a place where even "the hero of the bullfight chapter pukes." The thread running through the Little Review pieces and the vignettes is of a contemporary world where organized violence is condoned. A strong theme of "In Our Time" is alienation in the modern world particularly evident in the story "Out of Season". Like Eliot in The Waste Land Hemingway depicts early-20th century as "out of season" a place of war death tangled relationships without emotional fulfillment. Eliot's Waste Land motif runs throughout Hemingway's early fiction; it is strongly evident in "In Our Time" "The Sun Also Rises" 1926 and "A Farewell to Arms" 1929. The concept of objective correlative of using an image to evoke a feeling rather than describe the feeling was Eliot's and one Hemingway used throughout the stories in In Our Time. Nick Adams is "vital to Hemingway's career". Nick appears in eight of the stories and from his introduction in "Indian Camp" as a young boy the character behaves as the writer's alter ego a conduit through whom Hemingway expresses his own experiences. "The Doctor and the Doctor's Wife" follows next set in counterpoint to the first; an important piece. It is about Nick's parents which gives Hemingway a rare opportunity to write about his own childhood. "Big Two-Hearted River" a two-part story ends the collection. It was designed and written to be the concluding and climatic piece of the collection. Hemingway's writing style attracted attention when in our time was published. Edmund Wilson described the writing as "of the first destinction" writing in The Dial that the bullfight scenes were reminiscent of Francisco Goya paintings that the author "had almost invented a form of his own" and of the book as whole that it had "more artistic dignity than any written by an American about the period of the war." The American edition of In Our Time was praised by literary critics when it was published in 1925 and Mellow says of the book that it is one of Hemingway's masterpieces. Jonathan Cape, hardcover
