LA VIE TRES HORRIFICQUE DU GRAND GARGANTUA PERE DE PANTAGRUEL
Paris: Léon Pichon 1921. Edition Nouvelle. No. 353 OF 967 COPIES. 283 x 222 mm. 11 1/8 x 8 3/4". 180 1 pp. colophon.
Publisher's brown paper wrappers uncut edges spine and fore edges very neatly reinforced with Japanese rice paper. In a slightly scuffed marbled paper slipcase. With 105 woodcut head- and tailpieces woodcut initials and printer's device by Hermann-Paul. Half title page and title page printed in red and black as are the initials chapter headings printed in red. ◆Occasional faint offsetting from woodcuts otherwise a fine copy internally in a solid and very clean binding.

Striking Modernist woodcuts by French artist René Georges Hermann-Paul enliven our edition of this comic masterpiece in which Rabelais ca. 1494-1553 uses the giant Gargantua and his son Pantagruel to satirize scholastic education the monastic system which Rabelais knew from his time as a monk the papacy French magistrates and considerably more. Hermann-Paul 1864-1940 was a French artist who produced a great many illustrations for magazines and newspapers and his works of fine art found themselves displayed in galleries next to those by some of the great names of the Impressionist age. (TUDOR TRANSLATIONS). RABELAIS, FRANCOIS
GARGANTUA AND PANTAGRUEL
London: Published by David Nutt 1900. 210 x 152 mm. 8 1/4 x 6". Three volumes. Translated by Sir Thomas Urquhart and Peter Le Motteux. Introduction by Charles Whibley.
VERY ATTRACTIVE BROWN CRUSHED HALF MOROCCO BY BICKERS & SON stamp-signed on verso of front endpaper smooth russet linen boards spines gilt in ruled compartments raised bands decorated with double rules and small tool at either end top edge gilt other edges untrimmed. Publisher's original buckram covers bound in at rear. Decorated title page initials printer's device on verso of last leaf. Title pages printed in red and black; pastedowns with bookplate of Sir James Dunn. ◆A couple of tiny scratches to leather on lower cover of volume I a hint of soiling to lower board of volume II just a touch of rubbing to bottom edges and corners a couple of tiny blemishes internally but these faults all very minor and the set in excellent condition overall.

This is a pleasing edition of the first English translations of Rabelais' masterpiece originally published in two parts by two different translators nearly 40 years apart. Britain had to wait a century from the time of Rabelais' death until Sir Thomas Urquhart or Urchard 1611-60 published in 1653 a translation of the first two books of Rabelais' oeuvre comprising "Gargantua" and the first episodes of "Pantagruel." Four decades more passed until in 1693 Urquhart's version of the third book continuing the adventures of Pantagruel and Panurge appeared in print although the translation itself had been completed much earlier. The English Rabelais was at last completed in 1694 with publication by Peter Le Motteux of the final two books containing further escapades of Pantagruel and Panurge as well as the "Pantagruelian Prognostication" and 16 letters of Rabelais. Urquhart an eccentric Scotsman whose home was the castle of Cromarty possessed the requisite passionate and saucy temperament to translate Rabelais and this translation is considered his best work. Our editor Whibley says that "to turn from Urquhart to Motteux is to travel at a page from the old world to the new to exchange the fastness of Cromarty for the tobacco and the spilt wine of the tavern." Peter Le Motteux 1660-1718 was born in Rouen but migrated in 1685 to England because of the persecution of French Protestants. Although best known today for his translations of Rabelais and Cervantes Motteux was a person with manifold interests and occupations importing goods from India and China composing plays and operas and holding a position in the post office. His racy translation of Rabelais is equal in verve to that of Urquhart if less quaint. Published by David Nutt unknown

[Abbey, Edward] Francois Rabelais
The Works of Rabelais Edward Abbey's copy
London. Good. Edition unknown but with English translations by Urquhart and Motteux dating from the 1600s of Francois Rabelais died 1553 often called the first great French writer of prose. With Edward Abbey's ex-libris bookplate on the front free endpaper signed by him; the book plate is in color and depicts men rowing in a boat. In the table of contents Abbey has circled a number of chapters in Rabelais's "First Book" otherwise without marginalia. Red cloth with printed spine plate rough cut pages. A good copy with the title page and frontispiece detached laid in and the rear hinge almost fully cracked but holding firm; some wear to upper text block face. Spine plate faded. With a sleeved plastic protective jacket over the book that was likely put in place by Abbey. Rabelais was an influence for Abbey as he's mention in Desert Solitaire among a list of other named writers and "ten thousand other poets revolutionaries and independent spirits both famous and forgotten alive and dead whose heroism gives to human life on earth its adventure glory and significance." Elsewhere in reply to a inquiry he also wrote: "Technique: I imagine that I’ve been influenced by the classic writers of England and America; but I also admire very much Rabelais and Villon Lao-Tse and Job and Ecclesiastes Tolstoy Chekov and Andreyev." As such a nice book for the Abbey fan. unknown

BUDE’, Guillaume
Gulielmi Budaei Parisiensis, De contemptu rerum fortuitarum libri tres
In-4°, LVIII leaves (last leaf blank), printer’s mark, cardboard binding. First edition of this text which largely influenced Rabelais. After completing his law studies in Orléans, Budé made a commitment to study the Greek language, mathematics with Jacques Lefèvre d'Étaples, history, philosophy, theology and medicine. He was a notary, secretary of King Louis XII and his ambassador to Rome, showing a vast erudition that earned him the title of ‘prodigy of France’ from Erasmus. From the beginning of the reign of Francis I, who named him maître des requêtes in 1523, he tried to favor the cause of fine letters and philology at the court, with the establishment, in 1530, of the Collège de France, a school where the languages of antiquity, Latin, ancient Greek and Hebrew were taught.

Coco Carmelo
