Il n'en est rien quoiqu'on en ait pu dire jusqu'à présent: le "Journal de l'Ardèche qui à sa trente-huitième année, n'a pas eu un instant l'idée de cesser ses publications.; [...] Quant à l'élément religieux, nous n'avons pas besoin d'insister sr ce point: notre journal n'a jamais failli à sa mission, qui est de propager les nouvelles pouvant interesser le clergé, quand même notre position ne nous en ferait pas un devoir et nos tendances un vrai plaisir [...]

1876. Undetermined. very good. iii 56 12 pages with pasted on ephemerapp. Octavo. 1/2 black leather and marbled boards. Leather rubbed with some loss to head and tail of spine and corners. Marbled boards rubbed and scratched. Marbled endpapers. All edges marbled. Joint cracked after first text page but binding holding strong. Fifty-three manuscript pages on ruled paper with single page "frontis" containing pasted ephemera and 12 pieces of ephemera from the trip pasted individually onto pages after the text. Internally clean and virtually free of foxing to manuscript pages and ephemera. The diarist has penned the location "Boston" "Philadelphia" etc onto most pieces of ephemera very good A fascinating travel diary written in a clear strong hand describing a 2.5 month trip to tour Eastern Canada and the Northeastern United States. The diary begins with a detailed description of the Atlantic passage on the Cunard Steamer "Bothnia" with humorous accounts of rough seas. The diarist then gives accounts of travel through New York Washington Baltimore Philadelphia and Boston visiting famous American landmarks along the way. The diarist also visits the first official World's Fair the Centennial International Exhibition in Philadelphia and attends a Base Ball game between the Hartford Dark Blues and the Chicago White Stockings. 1876 was the first year of the National League and the championship was won by the Chicago White Stockings. Although 45 of the 56 pages are American content the 11 pages of Canadian content include some of the most interesting writing in the diary. The diarist visits Niagara Toronto Montreal and Ottawa and gives vivid descriptions of Niagara Falls traveling the St. Lawrence to Montreal and a dinner at Rideau Hall with Governor General Lord Dufferin and Prime Minister Alexander MacKenzie. The anecdote during this dinner provides the most interesting entry in the diary. The diarist's traveling partner mistakes MacKenzie for a butler and inquires about arranging for a cab. The diarist quotes Mackenzie's response as "Well I just happen to be the prime minister". The traveling companion embarrassed offered MacKenzie a cigar only to learn that the prime minister did not smoke. The ephemera at the rear of the diary includes menus and broadsides from hotels and attractions in both the US Washington Philadelphia Boston and others and Canada Niagara Falls and Montreal. Also included is a foldout plan of the Cunard Steamship "Bothnia" with the berths taken by the diarist and her travel partner identified. A truly engaging carefully written and documented travel diary of the US and Canada including a dinner with the Alexander MacKenzie the second Canadian Prime Minister. 1876 unknown
