Booksellers' advertisement on verso of title page. The pagination and register is continuous. The first issue of a monthly journal edited by Andrew Reid d. 1767 and Michel de la Roche 1710 - 1731 which continued until December 1736 and was then superseded by ' History of the works of the learned ' in January 1737. The Republic of Letters is the long-distance intellectual community in the late 17th and 18th centuries in Europe and America. In the early eighteenth century there were a number of general monthly magazines and journals which included ' light ' intellectual articles announcements of new books and brief reviews. There were however a number of journals devoted specifically to bibliographical culture. Possibly one of the most important in Great Britain was ' The present state of the republick of letters ' which carried announcements and abstracts of new books on all major subjects in an effort to cultivate the life of the mind. The issue offered here includes a review of the first edition of - Schoettgen Christian ' Antiquitates Triturae & Fulloniae ex antiquorum temporum .
