RED GUARDS IN THE CULTURAL REVOLUTION 1966-1976 . . This diary was written by a young woman mother of two children. She was also an idealistic member of the Communist Party an activist of the Cultural Revolution showing her love for Chairman Mao and infinite hatred of class enemies. . She lived in Anshan Liaoning. During the Cultural Revolution she was a propagandist of the 'Mao Zedong Thought Propaganda Team.' She went to the countryside to practice and promote Mao Zedong Thought. As usual with diaries written during this time documenting the activities of the Red Guards & Cultural Revolution participants this one is unsigned. . She fought against "class enemies at home & abroad American imperialism modern revisionism national opposition all the domestic bulls and snakes colluding with each other." . While this title is bit 'cryptic' it is actually a kind of "typical New Year Praise Praise Chairman Mao & praise the motherland book." . Below that is "Zahong Guo Ren Mín Jie Fang Jun Fu Chao Wei Wen Tuan Zeng: or "Chinese People's Liberation Army To The DPRK Condolence Mission Gift." . It was issued with blank pages one sepia-toned portrait of Chairman Mao followed by four color photos of Chinese progress color photos. The last page shows a 1954 calendar of 12 months printed in red. . Obviously the previous owner used this old book to record his thoughts comments and points of view from July 1960 1 page see illus01.jpg of Russian language practice this kind of study was also found on other pages in this diary. . Continuing from then July 1964 to 1967 each page is dated with month and day following each year citation. . While we have selected fascinating examples to show the content there remains about 95% of the diary which has not been described or illustrated. It is a wealth of primary source material and fascinating insights to the thought patterns of the Red Guards and their activities throughout the period 1966-1977 including comments on the death of Mao and the shock to the faithful loyal Red Guards. . . . RED AUGUST 1966 MASSACRE BY RED GUARDS . . OF BEIJING EDUCATORS: . There is a calendar page torn from an annual calendar in Chinese showing August 6 1966 gently laid into the diary. This marks the "RED AUGUST." . The original meaning of August 1966 of the Cultural Revolution is also used to indicate a series of massacres in Beijing which mainly took place during the period. . "According to the official statistics in 1980 from August to September in 1966 a total of 1772 people including teachers and principals of many schools were killed in Beijing by Red Guards; in addition 33695 homes were ransacked and 85196 families were forced to leave the city. . The book is firmly bound & solid in the publisher's original black cloth and silver-stamped cover title. There are a couple of old minor but mended worm holes in the first 2-3 pages in the lower gutter else solid firm & issue-free. . The pages are all intact without blemish. There is a minor ink stain to the left edge of one-third of the last pages there are 2 small worm holes in the hinge-gutter of the first five pages near the bottom of the spine inside the first fly leaf. . Otherwise this is an above average and quite excellent example of a genuine period authentic primary resource now seldom found. . RARITY OF ORIGINAL PRIMARY RESOURCES: Original primary resource documents of the Red Guards & Cultural Revolution are RARE and of major research value. Seldom found each is a superb insight to the thoughts actions parades and activities of the Red Guards during the greatest cultural turmoil of the mid-20th century in China. .
