‎New York: Newspaper Guild of New York. Very Good. 1953. "20th Anniversary". Hardcover. pictorial paper label on front cover; no dust jacket as issued shelfwear and bumping to bottom edges some fraying to cloth at top of spine a few tiny stains adjacent to spine on both front and rear covers B&W photographs cartoons ads etc. Commemorative yearbook issued to coincide with the "Page One Ball" an annual shindig at which the Big Apple's newspapermen and probably a few women gathered to make merry give themselves awards and generally congratulate one another for being well New York newspapermen at a time when NYC boasted no fewer than seven daily papers. Numerous reporters and columnists contributed short pieces many of a humorous nature and quite a few having to do with the vicissitudes of the journalistic racket and/or aspects of New York life. The cover illustration is by Fred L. Packer and among the cartoonists whose work appears in the book are Milton Caniff Irving Hoffman Bernard Seaman Chic Young and Virgil Partch VIP. And of course there are the ads: product ads for cigarettes airlines restaurants liquor hotels etc. and also numerous "tribute" ads mostly from showbiz figures "Best wishes from Sid Caesar" that sort of thing. This particular copy was personalized via the gold-embossment of his name at the lower corner of the front cover for film director Fred Zinnemann and laid in is a presentation letter to him from Ted Nelson Director of the Page One Ball; unfortunately whoever did the cover-embossing omitted the final "n" from Zinnemann's name. The high spirits documented in this publication unfortunately didn't quite survive all the way to the end of 1953: on November 28 six of the city's seven daily papers went on strike the photo engravers wanted a raise and better working conditions and for eleven whole days readers had only the Herald Tribute available to them for their regular news fix. NOTE that although the cover illustration references the "20th Anniversary" this would appear to be a reference to the Newspaper Guild of New York itself; I've found no evidence that this sort of commemorative "Page One" volume had been published prior to 1951. In any event an OCLC search turns up less than a handful of library holdings of this publication. . Newspaper Guild of New York hardcover‎

The first volume of a pioneer American health journal published from 1829-33. It features a selection of fascinating perspectives on medicine including analyses of the effects on health of headwear wine and malt liquor consumption mealtimes and water drinking among other things as well as considerations of race and longevity quacks mothering and more. On tobacco: "'A Victim of the Weed' is desirous of knowing whether he can at once abandon his pipe and segars or must part company in a gradual manner. Our advice is to desist immediately and entirely from the use of tobacco in every form and in any quantity however small" 220. On race: "The differences in this respect are primitive in the different races; the mucous body or varnish which constitutes the layer between the true skin beneath and the outer covering or cuticle being white or nearly so in the European or Caucasian races; yellowish in the Mongul or African; and black in the African" 146. ‎Chinese-American Chung Sai Yat Po 中西日報. Vol. 50 No. 154. San Francisco July 1 1949. 8 pages. The first Chinese daily paper published outside of China Chung Sai Yat Po was a vital voice for the Chinese American community throughout the first half of the 20th century. Founded in 1900 by reformist scholar Ng Poon Chew the newspaper served San Francisco’s Chinatown and broader Chinese diaspora with bilingual coverage of local national and international news advocating early for Chinese American citizenship and civil rights. This July 1 1949 edition published during a moment of global political transformation offers a critical glimpse into Chinese American perspectives in the months leading up to the founding of the People’s Republic of China. This issue prominently features coverage of the escalating tensions between the Chinese Nationalist government and the advancing Communist forces. A large headline along the right side discusses the Nationalist government’s reaction to American responses and criticisms of their policy failures in resisting Communist gains. The central front-page headline refers to joint U.S.–Taiwan military exercises highlighting shifting U.S. policy as it navigated Cold War priorities. Several columns address diplomatic developments in Asia including Japan’s postwar position Soviet-Chinese relations and U.S. foreign policy. Advertisements for San Francisco-based Chinese businesses—including herbalists optometrists restaurants and import-export shops—populate the interior and back pages. The paper is printed vertically and entirely in Chinese with traditional typesetting reflecting classical and modern influences. Moderate chipping and edge wear throughout with some loss to the upper margin and along the fold line resulting in small areas of missing text. Paper is browned but still legible and stable. Overall fair to good condition. While the writer of this book remains unnamed subjects range from the political "Kings have no right to to enter the tabernacle of the human mind" to the thoughtful "Why is an egg not boiled enough like an egg boiled too much" to the insightful "We live no longer in an age when fairy kings and queens bring riches to mortals. People are seldom seen to change from poverty to wealth without a visible wherefore." There are quotes and verses that the writer found inspiring as well as census data in New York: "The state of New York has an area of about 28 millions of acre. In 1731 contained only 50 289 inhabitants." Other quotes from the book include: "Remember your aged mother who hangs weeping over her grave until you return." "From the path of blood and such is the history of nations I cannot refuse to turn aside to gather some flower of science a virtue." "Persuasion is the resource of the feeble and the feeble can seldom persuade." "Our greatest happenings below the stars--the friendship of man and love of woman." "The fair sex - the only legitimate slave holders whose authority we acknowledge." "Lake Erie received its name from a tribe of Huron who inhabited its bank but were exterminated by the Iroquois and the word Erie is their language signifier 'Cat.'" ‎Handwritten diary of a high school girl detailing her experience at the 1876 World’s Fair in Philadelphia and over 30 pages of poetry to write in the autograph albums of schoolmates. <br /> 8 x 5 in. Original leather boards. 48 handwritten pages. Writing on first 5 pages pasted over partially or completely. “Cora B. Wakelee Huntington Conn. May 22 1876†inscribed on front end page. Includes memories of the World’s Fair from the perspective of a young girl in addition to pithy lines on friendship and original mourning poetry.<br /> <br /> The 1876 Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia was the first official World’s Fair to be held in the US. Wakelee details all of the marvelous things she saw including a model of Niagara Falls that was 160 ft long and 80 ft high. “.Niagara where the water comes pouring over he falls like the real Niagara. There was a house or cottage of each state. The New England House was a log house which as one story and one half high in which everything was 100 years old or over. The Bedstead was 200 years old and the bedding 100. There were two girls quilting a bedquilt. In the Connecticut Cottage there was a New England kitchen with the old fashioned chimney and the wooden nutmegs and wooden ham and gourds. In the Missippi sic state building everything was covered with moss. In Agricultural Hall they made tin pails and cups. All kinds of carpets Rag Three ply Brussels and Ingrain were made. Also cotton cloth bagging and silk handkerchiefs. In Horticultural Hall there was a Fig tree with figs on them also Orange lemon and Pineapple trees. The Egyptian mummies which were human bodies dried. A Swiss watch not so large as a gold dollar. There was Washington’s horses and private carriage. There was a picture of Washington and the Declaration of Independence worked with hari. And a picture of Washtington and family worked with worsted. In the lady’s pavilion was the head of a lady made of butter called the Butterhead. There was a large collection of animals and birds which were killed by a lady in Kansas. An Eagle made of gold pens was made to look like quills a little way off…â€<br /> <br /> Records information on the High School classes from 1880-1881. Newspapers cutting from 1881 that was also transcribed by hand into the notebook: “We are pleased to note that our side shared in the honors at the close of the Birmingham high school Miss Cora B. Wakelee taking the unabridged dictionary as the first prize for spelling.†The previous year she won $3.00 as thesecond place prize for Scholarship. Pages 14-48 are filled with handwritten poems and lines that would be copied into memory books or autograph albums of friends. These had sentimentality as well as humorous tone. “A wish for earth tis often given My wish for thee a home in Heaven.†“Though short our acquaintance has been And quickly the hours fave flown Permit me to call you my friend As others I longer have known.†“Come what may Come what will Remember the girl that went up hill.†“Way over here clear out of sight is the only place she’d let me write.†The entries also include original poetry mourning the loss of a close friend: “A sparkle of hope for the Lost In the deepest gloom of winter On a cold and stormy day While the shades of night were falling Mattie Otis passed away./ While the storm was in its fury One could hear the wild winds ror She has gone yes gone forever We shall never see her more.†Losses to spine loose hinges.
