Circa 1900. 1900. Very good. - A 2-1/4 inch high by 3-1/2 inch wide slip of cream-colored paper is signed "Irving Bacheller". 2 pieces of tape adhere to the verso where the autograph has been removed from an album. Very good. <p>In the mid-1880s journalist and author Irving Bacheller 1859-1950 founded the Bacheller Syndicate the first modern newspaper syndicate in the United StatesThrough this businesswhich provided specialized articles to the major Sunday newspapers he brought to American readers the writing of such British authors as Joseph Conrad Arthur Conan Doyle and Rudyard Kipling. He also established a working relationship with young author and journalist Stephen Crane whose "The Red Badge of Courage" became famous after it appeared in syndication. TYPED LETTER SIGNED by the American newspaper columnist LEONARD LYONS.
New York December 22 1973. 1973. Very good. - Approximately 48 words typed on 8-1/2 inch high by 5-1/2 inch wide "New York Post" stationery. In his letter addressed to his friend City Center producer Jean Dalrymple Lyons expresses his regrets that Jean could not make it to City Hall for the ceremony where he was awarded NYC's bronze medallion and a special scroll by Mayor John Lindsay: "It was a great honor that Mayor Lindsay bestowed on me and I shall always cherish it." Signed "Lennie". The letter is folded horizontally and vertically for mailing with some creases along the folds. Very good. <p>Born Leonard Sucher the American newspaper columnist Leonard Lyons 1906-1976 was a classmate of Lou Gehrig's at the High School of Commerce. Lyon graduated from St. John's University School of Law and practiced law for 5 years as he also wrote the weekly column "East of Broadway" for the "Jewish Daily Forward". Awarded a job as Broadway columnist for the New York Post it was then that he changed his name from Sucher to Lyons and went on to write the daily column "The Lyons Den" covering theater movies politics and art for the paper. A New York institution the column was picked up and distributed nationally by King Features Syndicate and later the McNaught Syndicate. In December of 1973 Lyons was awarded the city's bronze medallion & a special scroll by Mayor John Lindsay. He was again recognized for his work by Mayor Michael Bloomberg who issued another proclamation in his name on his 100th anniversary. His son the film and theater critic Jeffrey Lyons and his grandson the television personality Ben Lyons continue to use the name "The Lyons Den".<p>Jean Dalrymple 1902-1998 was the dynamic producer and director of theater and light-opera at Manhattan's City Center. Dalrymple began her career in Vaudeville appearing with James Cagney and Cary Grant in the early 1930s. She was a founding member of the American Theatre Wing the theatre service organization. She worked over the years as a personal manager for the likes of Leopold Stokowski Mary Martin Jose Iturbi Andre Kostalanetz Nathan Milstein and Lily Pons. She began her work at City Center with its founding in 1943 serving as a board member producer and publicist. Her productions there from the 1940s through the 1960s were a revitalizing influence on the whole New York theatre scene. In 1951 Jean Dalrymple married Major-General Philip deWitt Ginder commander of the Thunderbirds in Korea. She was a friend to Presidents and entertainment personalities throughout the world. TYPED LETTER SIGNED BY NEWSPAPER EDITOR AND PUBLISHER WORLD WAR I SECRETARY OF THE NAVY AND CHAMPION OF WHITE SUPREMACY JOSEPHUS DANIELS.
Raleigh NC: December 27 1929. 1929. Very good. - 49 words typed on an approximately 7 inch high by 6-1/4 inch wide cream-colored sheet of The News and Observer letterhead with Daniels' name as editor printed at the top. Signed "Josephus Daniels". There is some light creasing to the left margin of the letter & the top left corner is lightly creased. There is a very small light stain below the signature. Folded 3 times for mailing. Very good. <p>Daniels writes to future Congressman Seymour Halpern then a young autograph collector apologizing for the delay in signing and returning a photo of himself not here present: "I was away when the picture was received and have been under great strain since. I am very glad to autograph it and feel very much honored that you should desire it."<p>Josephus Daniels 1862-1948 was a Democrat and a newspaper editor and publisher from North Carolina. He was appointed by President Woodrow Wilson to serve as Secretary of the Navy during World War I. He also served as President Franklin D. Roosevelt's ambassador to Mexico from 1933-41. Though opposed to the Ku Klux Klan he began a white supremacy campaign in North Carolina which led to Democratic victories and to the disenfranchisement of African Americans. He was regarded as responsible for inciting the Wilmington Race Riots in 1898. The USS Josephus Daniels was named after him as well as schools and public buildings all over North Carolina.<p>The Queens New York Republican Congressman Seymour Halpern 1913-1997 started his political career as a campaign aide to New York's powerful mayor Fiorella La Guardia and first served in New York's State Senate for 14 years before seeking a seat in the U.S. Congress. In Albany Halpern sponsored 279 bills that became law including measures on schools housing civil rights nutrition and mental health. A Liberal he was something of an anomaly as the lone Republican representative from New York City and generally garnered support from Labor Unions and endorsement from the Liberal Party. Yet he never even considered switching parties as he considered membership in the Republican Party a family tradition and commitment. While he found ample time for his private pursuits including painting and collecting autographs he took his legislative duties very seriously. Of these he was proudest of his co-sponsorship of the 1964 Civil Rights Act and of the original 1965 Medicare legislation. Raleigh, NC: December 27, 1929. unknown

Very good. - 26 words typed on a sheet of 9-1/2 inch high by 6-inch wide cream-colored sheet of New York Post letterhead with the address and "Office of the President " printed at the top. Signed "Dorothy Schiff". The corners of the letter are lightly creased. Folded twice for mailing. Very good. <p>Schiff writes to Jean Dalrymple thanking her for sending a copy of her new book "Careers and Opportunities in the Theatre" and hoping it becomes a best seller.<p>Dorothy Schiff 1903-1989 was an owner and then the leftist publisher of the New York Post for nearly forty years. She was a granddaughter of financier Jacob Schiff. She was interested in social services and reform and was involved in several welfare groups. Schiff sold the Post to Rupert Murdoch in 1976. It was believed she was pessimistic about the future of New York afternoon papers and she was also concerned about the effect of owning the paper on the value of her estate. There is a paper remnant & a glue mark to the verso where the card has been removed from an album. Very good. <p>Theodore Tilton 1835-1907 was an American newspaper editor poet and abolitionist. In his newspaper work he was strongly supportive of abolitionism and the Union cause in the Civil War. From 1860-1871 he was assistant to Henry Ward Beecher. However in 1874 he filed criminal charges against the clergyman for "criminal intimacy" with his wife Libby Tilton. Following the apparent acquittal of Beecher in the trial Tilton moved to Paris where he lived for the rest of his life. Circa [1881]. unknown
