Anna Bell (Abell) Cornue
1877 Diary of a Very Young Well Written and Social Wife of a Wisconsin Hog Farmer
Wisconsin. Good with no dust jacket. 1877. Softcover. 589.99On offer is an interesting post-American Civil War farming diary kept by Anna Bell Abell Cornue 1856-1882. At the time of this diarys writing Anna was 21 years old and had been married to her husband the farmer Melvin E. Cornue 1848-1922 from Alden Illinois for over three years. Anna would die in her 20s at her mothers residence in Geneva Wisconsin only five years after she wrote this diary. After Annas death Melvin would go on to make a name for himself in Wisconsin opening a general store in 1888 and working as an assessor and justice of the peace. At the time of her writing Anna and Melvin are living in Wisconsin near Geneva and Melvin is running a hog farm while Anna keeps house. She writes complete daily entries from January 1-March 24 1877 and one weeks worth of entries in mid-May. Her entries are intensely local painting a picture of life on a midwestern farm around 150 years ago. Melvin sells their hogs and takes great care of their horses. Anna keeps the house and makes detailed notes about both her and Melvins work days. Some excerpts: Was a clear cold day wind in the north west. Melvin and I went to Geneva. I was bundled so I did not get cold. Ma and I went up town. I got me a new strainer and ma got me a wash board the snow being so thin in the road the sleighing is getting pretty rough but we have had nice sleighing for so little snow Jan 2. Valentines Day but that doesnt interest me much now. Was a bright morning and quite warm thawed quite a considerable. . Melvin hired the carpenter to build the barn today Mr. Austin from Alden $120. I am glad it is let at last. I baked things up today Feb 14. Was a nice bright day but quite cold NW wind M went to with oats I washed
I cleaned the shanty and baked some. M got home a little after 4. In the eve Melvin cleaned up another load of oats. I churned. Vina and the baby are over home. Minnie came up here after some milk and spoons. I wonder if we are going to have spring now Feb 26. Got up in good season and got ready to go to G. Melvin had a load of feed and small grist went out back and the snow was perfectly awful deep before got to road broke a whiffletree and M put on a line and we finally got to Mar 15. For a historian this diary paints a picture of a simple life lived in in rural America mid-19th century. Her entries are complete and taken as a whole paint a fairly clear picture of life in those early days. This 1877 diary measures 6.0 inches by 3.0 inches and contains about 183 pages. It is about 25% complete with thorough daily entries from Jan 1-March 24. The covers are in good condition. The binding is only slightly loosening and all pages are in good condition as well. The handwriting is legible. ; Manuscripts; 16mo 6" - 7" tall . paperback

ANNA ELIZABETH LEE
1959 - 1966 ORIGINAL MANUSCRIPT DIARY HAND WRITTEN BY A LATINO LOS ANGELES SENIOR JUST PRIOR TO AND AFTER THE U.S. POLITICAL WORLD IS ROCKED AND HER MOTHER BEGRUDGINGLY ACCEPTS HER WHITE AIR FORCE LIEUTENANT BOYFRIEND
LOS ANGELES. Good. 1959. On offer is a delightful collection of journal entries written by a young woman at the beginning of the 1960s in urban United States. This collection consists of 33 hand-written loose-leaf pages 8.5 inches by 11.0 inches. The pages are unlined and in good condition. Her handwriting is quite legible. Anna Elizabeth Lee is a high school senior living in Los Angeles when she begins this record. Her entries are occasional and in 33 pages run from June 1959 to April 1966. In them she recounts many of the things that would capture the interest of teenage girls - principally boys. ". I think I'd better tell you about Steve while everyone is downstairs. At first he was just a cute boy in my Spanish class - or before he was just 'Esteven Curry'. Then he became a cute boy in class and then Anita and Winda Weeks invited me to their party and "HE" was there. ." June 22 1959. Things had changed by July: "I hate the name Curry." July 20 1959; "Still do". Mar 28 1961. The next several pages offer a chatty series of observations and thoughts about other young people that she knows. In the infrequent entries she mentions many of them by name and talks about things that they do as well as tasks she was responsible for: "Last night Jim Roger Lois Don their dog and I went to the library. We didn't get home until 10:00 pm. Then I did my work cleaned the dining room 3rd and second floor stairs and halls 1st and 2nd floor bathrooms. Princess Margaret's wedding. It was very beautiful. May 7 1960. Things changed for her in 1962. ". Have not said anything to you at all about my latest and I hope last flame - Pete Emker ." Aug 1962. Emker had joined the United States Air Force and been commissioned as a lieutenant. She comments that her mother likes him "enough" but is unhappy that he is Caucasian leading a reader to suspect that she is perhaps latino - there are several passages written by Anna in Spanish. As of April 1965 they were still together and she records a worried conversation with Emker's sister: "Pete was sent to the Phillipines . about a week ago Monica phoned me on Monday and told me. She was pretty upset "I've already lost my father in a war not my brother too" and so was I ." April 19 1965. Her journal ends a page later - last entry written in April 1966. She and Peter Emker got married in 1967. Short as it is it offers an insight into the life of a late teen / young woman growing up in a turbulent time in America. A genealogist would appreciate the use of full names and references to locations in Michigan where her family originated.; Manuscript; 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall; KEYWORDS: HISTORY OF; 20TH CENTURY; 1950s; 1960s; MID-20TH CENTURY; UNITED STATES; CALIFORNIA; LOS ANGELES; ANNA ELIZABETH LEE; USAF; PETER G EMKER; PHILIPPINES; VIET NAM WAR; PRINCESS MARGARET TEENAGERS IN 1960s; YOUTH SOCIAL LIFE IN MID-20TH CENTURY AMERICA; DATING PATTERNS IN 1960s AMERICA; SCHOOL STUDENTS IN CALIFORNIA IN THE 1960s; WOMEN'S STUDIES; AMERICANA HANDWRITTEN MANUSCRIPT DOCUMENT LETTER AUTOGRAPH WRITER HAND WRITTEN DOCUMENTS SIGNED LETTERS MANUSCRIPTS DIARY DIARIES JOURNALS PERSONAL HISTORY SOCIAL HISTORY HISTORICAL HOLOGRAPH WRITERS AUTOGRAPHS PERSONAL MEMOIR MEMORIAL ANTIQUITÉ CONTRAT VÉLIN DOCUMENT MANUSCRIT PAPIER ANTIKE BRIEF PERGAMENT DOKUMENT MANUSKRIPT PAPIER OGGETTO D'ANTIQUARIATO ATTO VELINA DOCUMENTO MANOSCRITTO CARTA ANTIGÜEDAD HECHO VITELA DOCUMENTO MANUSCRITO PAPEL . unknown

Anna L Worthington
1882 European Travel Diary of an Upper Class Kentucky Woman Visiting England France Germany and Italy in the Lap of Luxury for Four Months
Europe England France Germany Italy United States. Good with no dust jacket. 1882. Softcover. On offer is a fine private European travel journal kept by a rich young Kentucky woman who traveled extensively. The journal belonged to Anna L. Worthington. She was born in 1864 in Cincinnati Ohio and lived in Covington Kentucky. Her father was Henry Worthington who was known as one of the foremost businessmen in Covington amassing a large fortune in the tobacco industry. In 1886 Anna married in George Gatewood Hamilton 1861-1928 and had one daughter Anna Roberta Hamilton 1888-1939. She passed away in 1895 at the young age of 30. George was also a successful businessman and land owner. He went on to remarry Allie Chilton after Annas death. The journal recounts a four-month trip she took throughout Europe when she was 18 years old. She travelled as part of a small group. The trip was extensive which reflected the very wealthy background she came from. Her travels included England France Germany and Italy and focused on historical locations and places known for their art and architecture. Her excerpts are long and newsy written in a bouncy cursive hand. She kept her journal from May 1 through August 27 1882. Some brief excerpts follow: Went to Versailles with Madame went on the Chemin de fer and came back on the tramway. We went immediately to the Castle de Versailles which was built by Louis 14th for Mlle de la Valliere. He once heard her say to a courtier that the only one she loved was the King of the Sun
May 19. Left Pisa about 11: 40 for Rome. Very comfortable until we got to Chivioveccia sic. When we had to put up our windows because we were on the Campagna
June 6. Started for Frankfort at eleven arrived at one. Went to see.the church where the emperors were crowned.Went to the Burying ground where Goethes mother is buried. Anna D. Will & I went to the stores
July 22. Went to the Crystal Palace wanted to go to see Billy Taylor but we were taken in & only saw a man cut a woman to pieces and a few other things equally ridiculous
August 4. This diary provides terrific insight into the the state of both travel and major European cities in the late 19th century. For a social historian this journal is a silent testament to the social structures in late 19th century America and how some women were able to enjoy a life experience much different than that experienced by the majority of women in the country. As such it would also be a useful addition to any gender studies library. The journal is a soft-covered notebook containing 132 lined pages. The cover is leather and shows wear along the spine and on the corners. The pages are in good condition and the handwriting is quite legible. It is approximately 55% complete. Overall Good. ; Manuscripts; 8vo 8" - 9" tall; 132 pages; Signed by Author . paperback
