‎ZARA, Louis‎

‎Dark Rider: A Novel Based on the Life of Stephen Crane‎

‎Cleveland: The World Publishing Company 1961. Hardcover. Small 4to. Red cloth with gilt spine lettering pictorial dust jacket. 505pp. Very good/very good. Minor jacket edgewear and age toning. Tight and attractive first edition of this historical fiction -- with lovely autograph addition: Tipped to inner flyleaf is a Typed Letter Signed from Zara 5½" X 8½" Chicago IL 6 August 1941. Addressed to Lincoln/Civil War scholar Arnold F. Gates 1914-93. Near fine. On imprinted letterhead Zara thanks his admirer for sending copies of two Lincoln-related pamphlets he'd published asking: "I am curious about these booklets. Do you print these yourself and how do you distribute them I hope the contact with Morrow will do you some good. I am always glad to help where I can." Of his next book he notes: "I am working on the revision of my book and alas! no good clinching title has come as yet: usually my wife picks one almost from the first chapter." Presumably he refers to his 1943 release "Against This Rock." He goes on: "I saw in the press that Louis Bromfield had been in and out of the city of Chicago a number of times. Recalling how enthusiastic you were about him I wrote him a note asking him to give me a call when he came through next. He said he would." Boldly signed in black ink at the close. Zara 1910-2001 was a New York book and magazine editor and publisher who authored a handful of novels mainly historical fiction and fictionalized biographies such as this one and others on Philip II of Spain and Herman Melville. ‎William H. Lambert. Asks Reports Upon the Following Books and Pamphlets Relating in Whole or Part to Abraham Lincoln‎

‎Philadelphia: William H. Lambert 1906. Paperback. 8vo. Self-cover. 3pp. Very good. Mild age toning. Lincoln collector extraordinaire Lambert 1842-1912 used to send out lists such as this of Lincolniana he lacked; they worked for he ended up with one of the greatest Lincoln collections in existence though a fire in 1906 destroyed part of it. Monaghan records one such 1906 list noting that "a variant was issued earlier" -- apparently he knew of its existence but was unable to locate a copy to record in his bibliography. This is an example of that scarce pre-1906 want list and it consists of a simple single column list of 108 titles. Fascinating to Most uncommon. MONAGHAN 1504 variant. William H. Lambert paperback‎

Addressed to noted Lincoln scholar Arnold F. Gates 1914-93. Near fine. Faint original folds. On "Williams College" letterhead Burns writes provocatively on Lincoln's leadership in part: "You raise such a basic question about Lincoln that I cannot do justice to it in a letter. Actually I am still trying to sort out my own views of Lincoln especially since I deal with him at the start of the second volume of 'The American Experiment.' On the one hand I am impressed by his superb political operationalism and by his ability to couch the reasons for his actions in such noble words. On the other hand I am not sure what grade to give to a man who essentially as I see it operated brilliantly amid multiple political and moral pressures but did not it seemed to me for a long time raise the whole struggle to the moral dimension that was required by the price paid in the Civil War. I any event I will pursue my wonderings and reflections on all this and am properly influenced by your own remarks." He continues "Perhaps I could put my own view more succinctly by saying that I believe that along with the kind of brilliant transactional leadership that Lincoln represented there is a place for transforming leadership a distinction I tried to develop in a book I wrote a few years ago on leadership." Boldly signed in full in black ink. Simon and Schuster hardcover‎

While a signed copy of this would of course raise eyebrows here's the next best thing: Tipped to the front flyleaf is a choice 4" X 2½" lined slip on which Cox boldly penned in brown ink: "Here it is! / SS Cox." -- an appropriate sentiment as the sun set on "Sunset" Cox. Discreet ex-library copy with very few markings -- bookplate on front pastedown indicates this was given to a public library in 1895 by an Illinois representative R.R. Hitt 1834-1906.
