Publisher's full green cloth gilt lettering on spine gilt border and publisher's medallion gilt on cover t.e.g. fore-edge deckle. Illustrated with tissue-protected frontispiece and fold-out map. William Lewis Manly 1820-1903 was an American pioneer of the mid-19th century. He was first a fur hunter a guide of Westward bound caravans a seeker of gold and then a farmer and writer in his later years. He wrote an autobiography first published with the title "From Vermont to California" then a second edition with the title "Death Valley in '49" which tells of the pioneer experience in America's Far West in particular the 1848 California Gold Rush. In December 1848 at age 29 Manly traversed California's Death Valley today the centerpiece of Death Valley National Park as a member of a group of emigrant pioneers traveling overland from Salt Lake City Utah to the California gold rush the Death Valley '49ers. These pioneers became lost in the Great Basin Desert and entered Death Valley having followed an inaccurate map for three weeks. Their food supplies were almost exhausted and the oxen pulling their wagons were dying of starvation. Manly with his associate John Haney Rogers trekked 250 miles on foot across the Mojave Desert to Rancho San Fernando near Los Angeles California to scout an evacuation route for the families trapped in Death Valley and procure food and horses if a settlement could be located. . ‎Powys, John Cowper; Llewellyn Powys‎

‎Confessions of Two Brothers‎

‎NY: The Mansas Press. Very Good with no dust jacket. 1916. First Printing. Hard Cover. Publisher's full navy blue cloth black lettering and red borders on labels on cover and spine. John Cowper Powys 1872-1963 was a British novelist lecturer philosopher literary critic and poet. Powys is a somewhat controversial writer "who evokes both massive contempt and near idolatry". Thus while Walter Allen in Tradition and Dream recognizes Powys's genius he is dissatisfied with what Powys has done with it seeing Powys’s approach to the novel as "so alien to the temper of the age as to be impossible for many people to take seriously". Annie Dillard however views things quite differently: "John Cowper Powys is a powerful genius whose novels stir us deeply." What is noteworthy is that throughout his career he consistently gained the admiration of novelists as diverse as Theodore Dreiser Henry Miller Iris Murdoch Margaret Drabble and James Purdy as well as the academic critics George Painter G. Wilson Knight George Steiner Harald Fawkner and Jerome McGann. Periodically over almost 50 years starting with Confessions of Two Brothers in 1916 Powys wrote works that present his personal philosophy of life. . Minimal shelf-wear text block tight and clean a single piece of tape on the inside of back cover. VERY GOOD. 12mo 7" - 7½" tall. 265 pp . The Mansas Press hardcover‎

‎Remnick, David‎

‎The Bridge: The Life and Rise of Barack Obama‎

‎NY: Alfred A. Knopf. As New in As New dust jacket. 2010. Stated First Edition. First Printing. Hard Cover. 1400043603 . No story has been more central to America’s history this century than the rise of Barack Obama and until now no journalist or historian has written a book that fully investigates the circumstances and experiences of Obama’s life or explores the ambition behind his rise. Those familiar with Obama’s own best-selling memoir or his campaign speeches know the touchstones and details that he chooses to emphasize but now—from a writer whose gift for illuminating the historical significance of unfolding events is without peer—we have a portrait at once masterly and fresh nuanced and unexpected of a young man in search of himself and of a rising politician determined to become the first African-American president. The Bridge offers the most complete account yet of Obama’s tragic father a brilliant economist who abandoned his family and ended his life as a beaten man; of his mother Stanley Ann Dunham who had a child as a teenager and then built her career as an anthropologist living and studying in Indonesia; and of the succession of elite institutions that first exposed Obama to the social tensions and intellectual currents that would force him to imagine and fashion an identity for himself. Through extensive on-the-record interviews with friends and teachers mentors and disparagers family members and Obama himself David Remnick allows us to see how a rootless unaccomplished and confused young man created himself first as a community organizer in Chicago an experience that would not only shape his urge to work in politics but give him a home and a community and that would propel him to Harvard Law School where his sense of a greater mission emerged. Deftly setting Obama’s political career against the galvanizing intersection of race and politics in Chicago’s history Remnick shows us how that city’s complex racial legacy would make Obama’s forays into politics a source of controversy and bare-knuckle tactics: his clashes with older black politicians in the Illinois State Senate his disastrous decision to challenge the former Black Panther Bobby Rush for Congress in 2000 the sex scandals that would decimate his more experienced opponents in the 2004 Senate race and the story—from both sides—of his confrontation with his former pastor Jeremiah Wright. By looking at Obama’s political rise through the prism of our racial history Remnick gives us the conflicting agendas of black politicians: the dilemmas of men like Jesse Jackson John Lewis and Joseph Lowery heroes of the civil rights movement who are forced to reassess old loyalties and understand the priorities of a new generation of African-American leaders. The Bridge revisits the American drama of race from slavery to civil rights and makes clear how Obama’s quest is not just his own but is emblematic of a nation where destiny is defined by individuals keen to imagine a future that is different from the reality of their current lives. Both the volume and the unclipped dust jacket are in perfect pristine condition; unread unmarked tight square and clean. AS NEW/AS NEW. Large 8vo 9" - 10" tall. 672 pp . Alfred A. Knopf hardcover‎

Publisher's full blue cloth gilt lettering on spine gilt medallion on cover t.e.g. John Woods was an English farmer apparently of some substance who was attracted by the opportunities for himself and his family in the United States and especially in the Midwest. Like many others before and after he descended the Ohio River and struck out north and west to give great impetus to the early settlement of the southern parts of several midwestern states. His detailed and interesting account of his journey and what he found was surely an important contribution to the early development of Illinois. A map of Woods's trip from Baltimore to Illinois was drawn for this edition. On several trips throughout Illinois he became the adopted son of Chief Waba of the Kickapoo and married Watseka niece of Chief Tamin of the Kankakee Potawatomi. After he walked for 75 miles in a single night to warn the town of Danville of an impending raid by Indians he earned the nickname "Pa-pa-ma-ta-be" or "Swift-Walker." ‎Ross, Alexander; Milo Milton Quaife (ed)‎

‎Adventures of the First Settlers on the Oregon or Columbia River: Being a Narrative of the Expedition fitted out by John Jacob Astor to establish the "Pacific Fur Company" with an account of some Indian Tribes on the Coast of the Pacific‎

‎Chicago: R. R. Donnelley & Sons / The Lakeside Press. Very Good with No dust jacket as issued. 1923. First Edition Thus. First Printing. Hard Cover. Publisher's full green cloth gilt lettering on spine gilt border and publisher's medallion gilt on cover t.e.g. fore-edge deckle. Illustrated with fold-out map frontispiece. Alexander Ross 1783-1856 was a fur trader and author. In 1811 while working for John Jacob Astor's Pacific Fur Company Ross took part in the founding of Fort Astoria a fur-trading post at the mouth of the Columbia River. During the same year he led a detachment up the Columbia River and founded Fort Okanogan where during the winter he was the sole PFC employee at the trading post. During his solitary posting Ross' hair greyed from the stress of being socially isolated among the welcoming Syilx people "savages who had never seen a white man before." In 1818 Ross acted as scribe for a trading party from the North West Company who traveled within sight of the Teton Range in modern Wyoming. He and trapper Daniel Potts apparently viewed some of the thermal features of what is today Yellowstone National Park. Each of them produced an account of these features with Ross reporting that ".boiling fountain having different degrees of temperature were very numerous; one or two were so very hot as to boil meat." Ross explored various territories of the Pacific Northwest. In 1824 while searching the mountain wilderness of what is present day Idaho known to them as Columbia District for beaver Ross came up the Wood River and discovered Galena Summit on September 18. Leading a large brigade of Hudson's Bay Company trappers he wondered if he could get through unknown mountains and rocky defiles that obstructed his passage back to his base of operations at present Challis. Unwilling to turn back he pressed on to explore Stanley Basin and the difficult canyon beyond. When he reached Challis on October 5 1824 he had traveled the route now followed by Idaho State Highway 75 from Bellevue to Salmon through mostly unexplored land. . Former owner's signature on ffep otherwise unmarked. Gilt bright boards clean corners sharp text block tight and square. VERY GOOD. . The Lakeside Classics Series. Vol. 21.
