Haverhill Massachusetts USA. Very Good. 1896. The endpapers are anotated: "Grandpa from Florence Christmas 1895." Grandpa save for two summer months details weather approximates family comings and goings letters received visitors and births deaths and local events. Many Republican political references. Here are some snippets: "Went to a bicycle road race and balloon ascension with parachute jump.firemen's muster." "Went to Irish Temperance Parade." "Republican Rally at City Hall." "A man gave slite hand performants." "Great R Road accident at Concord NH White Mountains Express." "Great wind broke electric wire." "Went to Old Residents entertainment at City Hall." The gentleman continued through December 31st 1896 using the memorandum and financial pages and did not stop until July 1897. As a professor of poetry at Oxford University Arnold was the first to deliver his lectures in English instead of Latin. Folcroft Press; 1969. This is the third edition - and third publisher for this work. We could not find another copy of this edition. 8vo black clothbound hardcover with silver foil titles on spine; 185 pages including index and some full page black and white illustrations of Matthew Arnold. The book has three sections: The Man The Poet The Critic Book appears to have been professionally rebound for library use with new covers and endpapers using a style where they folded the inside corners underneath the endpapers. This caused a slight impression on the corners of pages near the beginning and end of the book and is most notable on the endpapers. There are no markings to indicate a rebound so this could be the original publisher's binding. Typical library treatments. Some pages appear to have an interesting publisher's blemish: a shadow that extends above the typeset area; some pages look like they were created using a photo process which retained the clipped corners of the original. We'll try and capture this unusual feature in our photographs. There is a small light stain on inside bottom corner and also one on outside pages which may appear in the very far margin of pages prior to page 22. We noted light soil in the margins of pages 97 and 98 and a spot on front cover. Bumped top of spine and top back corner. . Cloth. Good/No Jacket. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Ex-Library. The only writing in this book is that of the author Carlos Thompson whose written remarks including a genial inscription cover more than half of the dedication page. It appears that Thompson has sent this book as well as a German edition to a local woman. He has also laid in a photocopy which is inscribed to the same woman and signed "C Th." The latter is a review by Robert Blake which appeared 11 May 1969 in the Sunday Times. Basis of the book is the desire by the author to clear the reputation of Winston Churchill after it was suggested by others that Churchill was involved in the death of the Polish general Sikorski in July of 1943. Prominent in the story are the author German playwright Rolf Hochhuth Lawrence Olivier and author David Irving to whose previous book Accident the Death of General Sikorski Thompson's book is a rebuttal. I waded through this volume once started it again and gave up. I am left with the impression that Thompson did a truly remarkable job of quashing the allegations of murder. Carlos Thompson born in Argentina as Juan Carlos Mundin Schaffter in 1923 became a film star in Germany and Hollywood where he played opposite some of the best-known actresses of the 50's. He committed suicide in 1990 four years after the death of his wife of many years actress Lilli Palmer. 461 pp. including seven appendices. Colin Smythe hardcover
