The author/editor Sir Samuel Egerton Brydges, 1st Baronet (1762-1837) was an English bibliographer and genealogist. He was also Member of Parliament for Maidstone from 1812 to 1818. He was called to the bar from the Middle Temple in 1787. He wrote some novels and poems, now forgotten, but rendered valuable service by his bibliographical publications, especially this Censura Literaria. Sarah Franklin "Sally" Bache (1744-1808) was the daughter of Benjamin Franklin and Deborah Read. She was a leader in relief work during the American Revolutionary War and frequently served as her father's political and social hostess, as her mother had died in 1774. Sarah Bache was Benjamin Franklin's daughter. Benjamin Franklin Bache (1769-1798) was an American journalist, printer and publisher. He founded the Philadelphia Aurora, a newspaper that supported Jeffersonian philosophy. He frequently attacked the Federalist political leaders, including Presidents George Washington and John Adams, and historian Gordon S. Wood wrote that "no editor did more to politicize the press in the 1790s." His paper's heated attacks are thought to have contributed to Congress's passage of the Alien and Sedition Acts. The favorite grandson of Benjamin Franklin, Bache was often referred to as "Lightning Rod Junior" after his famous grandfather's experiment. He died at 29 in the yellow-fever epidemic of 1798. William Cowper (1731-1800) was an English poet and hymnodist. One of the most popular poets of his time, Cowper changed the direction of 18th century nature poetry by writing of everyday life and scenes of the English countryside. In many ways, he was one of the forerunners of Romantic poetry. After being institutionalised for insanity (1763-1765, Cowper found refuge in a fervent evangelical Christianity, the inspiration behind his much-loved hymns. His poem 'Light Shining out of Darkness' gives us the phrase: 'God moves in a mysterious way / His wonders to perform.' He also wrote a number of anti-slavery poems including 'The Negro's Complaint' (1788) which rapidly became very famous, and was often quoted by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. His most famous work was 'The Task'. The poem was left unfinished and published the year after Linn's death at age 27 of tuberculosis. **The bookplate is interesting: The Library Company purchased, in 1832 in return for an annuity of $400 a year, the library of the eccentric artist James Cox. Robert Charles Dallas (1754-1824) was a Jamaican-born British poet and conservative writer, who is best known for this contentious book on Lord Byron. When Byron died in April 1814, Dallas (who was introduced himself to Byron by letter on the publication of Hours of Idleness [1807] proposed to publish the Recollections. Some letters addressed by Byron to his mother during his eastern travels were given to Dallas by Byron. Dallas, on the strength of these and other communications, prepared an account of Byron's life from 1808 to 1814. He notified Byron in 1819 that the Recollections were finished, and would be published only after his own death. On the grapevine (via Byron's aunt Julia Heath) Augusta Leigh, Byron's half-sister who was dealing with a number of would-be biographers, heard of the plan and objected strongly. Dallas won over George Anson Byron, his brother-in-law. John Cam Hobhouse and John Hanson, Byron's executors, obtained an injunction from Lord Eldon against the publication of the letters. Extracts from the Recollections appeared in The Courier, in November 1824, but about a month behind Thomas Medwin's Conversations of Lord Byron. By the time of the Courier publication, Dallas had returned to France and died. There was a French version, and his son Alexander Dallas had the book published in 1825, in Paris. He was elected to the State Senate in 1849, serving until 1852 when he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives and began Congressional service on March 4, 1853, and died less than a year later. First Edition. Hardbound. Very good. Stephen Girard (1750-1831), born in Bordeaux France, arrived in Philadelphia in 1776. Through international shipping and merchant activities he became one of the richest men of his time. Starting in 1811 he made an additional fortune as America's first Private Banker. In this role he helped finance the U.S. through the War of 1812. With the assistance of noted attorney William J. Duane, (1780-1865), in the 1820s, he wrote a long will and testament, outlining every detail of how his fortune would be used. He delighted in keeping the document secret, knowing that everyone wondered what would happen to his fortune. Immediately after his death in 1831, the provisions of his will were made public. In addition to extensive personal and institutional bequests, he left the bulk of his fortune to the city of Philadelphia to build and operate a residential school for impoverished orphans. This innovative social vision was considered extremely unusual both then and now: to use the Girard fortune not to endow another so-called "Ivy League" college or university but to assist children in need. In 1831, the bequest was the largest single act of philanthropy up to that time in American history, and the basis for Girard College. Nice copy. PAIMP 23

A noble, he was involved in numerous scandals that had left his reputation in ruins, before the start of the Revolution (1789). Nonetheless, he rose to the top of the French political hierarchy. He acquired the reputation as the 'voice of the people.' The later discovery that he was in the pay of King Louis XVI and the Austrian enemies of France beginning in 1790 caused his posthumous disgrace. Historians are deeply split on whether he was a great leader who almost saved the nation from the Terror, a venal demagogue lacking political or moral values, or a traitor in the pay of the enemy. During the French Revolution, he, his two sons and their families immigrated to the United States (1799). His son Eleuthere Irenee du Pont was the founder of E.I. du Pont de Nemours and Company. He was the patriarch and progenitor of one of the United States' most successful and wealthiest business dynasties of the 19th and 20th centuries. FR4

Samuel Simon Schmucker (1799-1873) was a German-American Lutheran pastor and theologian. He was integral to the founding of the Lutheran church body known as the General Synod, as well as the oldest continuously-operating Lutheran seminary (Gettysburg Seminary) and college in North America (Gettysburg College). Later in his career, Schmucker became a controversial figure because of his theological positions, in particular his approach to the Lutheran Confessions. Outside of the church, Schmucker was a noted abolitionist. His theological position was a mix of "Puritanism, Pietism, and shallow Rationalism" rather than the pure Lutheranism of his day. Harriet Beecher Stowe writes 'A Sketch', juxtaposing a rich man, with an ornate, unread bible next to his bed, with a poor woman, with a well read penny edition of the bible. Too poor to buy wood, she and her children huddle together and read the bible, achieving a spiritual warmth. Once again, reading for spiritual improvement and consolation is emphasized. NW51
