George Orwell
Animal farm: A Fairy Story
Penguin Books India 2011. First edition. Softcover. New. 11 x 18 cm. The oppressed mistreated animals of Manor Farm launch a revolution driving out the human farmer and begin to run the farm themselves. They create a code called Animalism in which they outline seven main commandments the principal of which is all animals are equal and decide to live by this code. The idea for the revolution in Animal Farm: A Fair Story began when the old prize winning boar Old Major gathers the farm animals together and tells them of his dream of a place in which animal live in peace and harmony free of the oppression of humans. When Old Major dies two pigs Napoleon and Snowball decide to make the old pig’s dream a reality. They succeed with the help of the other animals in the farm. A period of peace and happiness follows. But this period does not last. Snowball wants to educate all the animals and wants their participation in running the farm. Napoleon does not agree. When Snowball decides to build a windmill to generate electricity for the farm and gives a speech about it Napoleon puts his own plans into action. He has secretly trained a group of attack dogs dogs that he took in when they were little puppies ostensibly to ‘educate them’. He now uses them to chase off Snowball and assumes all the powers for himself and his supporters. The pigs now become a special privileged class. With the help of a sidekick Squealer who acts as Napoleon’s mouthpiece and propagandist Napoleon slowly manages to convince all the animals that everything he is doing is for their own good. Squealer is good at his job and the animals in Animal Farm: A Fair Story believe him despite their own appalling living conditions. Gradually the code of Animalism is thrown aside every rule broken. A new order emerges but not the one that the old boar Old Major envisioned. Printed Pages: 95. Penguin Books India paperback

George Orwell
Animal Farm
Peacock/ Atlantic Publishers & Distributors P Ltd. 2013. Softcover. New. Animal Farm is a dystopian allegorical novella. It reflects events leading up to and during the Stalin era before World War II. Orwell being a democratic socialist was a critic of Joseph Stalin and was against Moscow-directed Stalinism. The novel addresses not only the corruption of the revolution by its leaders but also how wickedness indifference ignorance greed and myopia destroy any possibility of a utopia. While the novel portrays corrupt leadership as the flaw in revolution though not the act of revolution itself it also shows how potential ignorance and indifference to problems within a revolution could allow horrors to happen if smooth transition to a people’s government is not effected. Time magazine chose the book as one of the 1 best English-language novels 1923 to 25. It was also placed at No. 31 on the Modern Library List of Best 2th Century Novels in English. Printed Pages: 96. George Orwell
Animal Farm
Indialog Publisher 2003. Softcover. New. It is universally understood that George Orwell wrote Animal Farm – and later 1984 – as critiques of ""International Communism"" and of Soviet Union particularly. Animal Farm which appeared before in 1945 gained popularity for its blatant allusion to what Orwell derided as the flawed communism of the Soviet Union. He intended the book as a scathing satire on the Russian leaders who sold out socialist ideals to fit hands-in-glove with the capitalist powers in the West. A confirmed socialist throughout his life Orwell had a hard time getting Animal Farm published as England in 1945 was an ally of the erstwhile Stalinist Russia. Most animal characters in the novel have their parallels in the world politics of the day. Printed Pages: 119. Indialog Publisher paperback

George Orwell
1984: A Novel
Rupa Publications 2014. Softcover. New. 11 x 18 cm. 1984 A Novel written in the 1940s is set a few decades in the future in the 1980s. It begins on April 4 1984. The central character Winston Smith is a member of the Party that rules the country of Oceania. Winston is a small cog in the wheel of the Party. It is a totalitarian regime where each individual’s every action at every moment is under constant observation. The leader of the Party is a mysterious figure just known as Big Brother. And it is said that the Big Brother is always watching. Winston has become tired of the controlling ways of the Party. The departments of the government have names that are opposite to the functions they perform. The Ministry of Love deals with law and order using torture as a vital weapon. The Ministry of Peace is in-charge of war. The Ministry of Truth where Winston works has the task of altering truth for propaganda to twist facts to suit the needs of the Party. Winston himself has a job of rewriting historical facts in a way that benefits the Party and its agenda. Recently Winston has begun to record his thoughts against the party in a diary. This is a crime even thinking thoughts against the party is a Thoughtcrime. He manages to conceal his diary and carries on his work as usual. He falls in love with a co-worker named Julia but even love and sex can be construed as crimes in this regime and they have to be careful about their relationship. The Party has even begun to enforce the use of a new language called Newspeak in which all words that refer to dissident thoughts and rebellion have been eliminated. The Party does not want even the language to present a means of expressing opposition to themselves. In this scenario Winston carries on his life thinking about the dissident group called The Brotherhood and wondering if he can join them. He soon gets an opportunity to meet its legendary leader but the result is not what he expects. 1984 A Novel has come to represent totalitarian or controlling regimes and many of the word and phrases used in the book like Big Brother Thoughtcrime Room 101 and Doublethink have all entered common usage in English since the book was published. Orwellian has now come to be associated with any regime that uses deception and constant monitoring to control its people. Printed Pages: 312. Rupa Publications paperback
