George Orwell
Animal Farm
Peacock/ Atlantic Publishers & Distributors P Ltd. 2013. Hardcover. New. Animal Farm is a dystopian allegorical novella. It reflects events leading up to and during the Stalin era before World War II. Orwell being a democratic socialist was a critic of Joseph Stalin and was against Moscow-directed Stalinism. The novel addresses not only the corruption of the revolution by its leaders but also how wickedness indifference ignorance greed and myopia destroy any possibility of a utopia. While the novel portrays corrupt leadership as the flaw in revolution though not the act of revolution itself it also shows how potential ignorance and indifference to problems within a revolution could allow horrors to happen if smooth transition to a people’s government is not effected. Time magazine chose the book as one of the 1 best English-language novels 1923 to 25. It was also placed at No. 31 on the Modern Library List of Best 2th Century Novels in English. Printed Pages: 96. George Orwell
Animal Farm
Rupa Publications India Pvt. Ltd 2015. Softcover. New. 12 x 18 cm. Summary Of The Book There is no turning back once the war trumpet has been the sounded. The animals at Manor Farm have declared war on their drunken and irresponsible owner Mr. Jones and have secured the farm for themselves after successfully driving out all the humans. It all began when Old Major the old prize boar on Manor Farm had a dream in which animals live in a utopian world without the tyranny of man. Inspired by Old Major’s rhetoric and an old song “Beasts of England” taught to them by Old Major the animals revolt against the tyranny of their human masters. Once the animals take over the farm they expect things to get better for their kind and emphatically declare all animals to be equal. Does the utopian dream of Old Major live up to the animals’ expectations or are they in for a dystopian awakening as things take on an altogether different turn Do Snowball and Napoleon manage to bring order to the chaotic situation following the revolution Now that the humans have been banished from Manor Farm what new evil lurks round the corner waiting to possess the innocent farm animals Animal Farm is a straightforward tale of a remarkable revolution in the animal world. However on a deeper level it is a political satire of the cruel man-made ideologies of class divisions and the subsequent class struggles involved. A radio version of the novella was broadcast on BBC Radio in January 1947. Animal Farm has also been adapted to film twice as an animated feature in 1954 and later as a TV live action version in 1999. A theatrical version of Animal Farm was staged in London in 1984 followed by a tour of nine cities in 1985. Guy Masterson’s solo version that premiered at the Traverse Theatre Edinburgh in 1995 has been touring the world since. Printed Pages: 120. Rupa Publications India Pvt. Ltd paperback

Orwell George
Homage to Catalonia

The First UK printing published by Secker and Warburg in 1938. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. The lime green boards are very lightly soiled. Mild rubbing to the corners and lower edges. The spine is only very slightly toned and the gilt titling remains very bright. Light pushing at the spine ends. Small bump to lower front corner. The text block is toned and there is the usual moderate offsetting to the end papers. Mild toning to the page edges. Free from inscriptions erasures and markings. NO wrapper. A very presentable copy and in much better condition than usually encountered. In 'Homage to Catalonia' Orwell recounts his experiences as a soldier and disillusionment with totalitarian regimes. Notably Victor Gollancz who had published the English editions of Orwell's earlier works refused to publish Homage to Catalonia because of its radical political stance. Instead it was published by Secker and Warburg the firm that would go on to publish Orwell's best known works - Animal Farm 1945 and Nineteen Eighty-Four 1949. Ashtonrarebooks welcomes direct contact.
Secker and Warburg hardcover

George Orwell
Animal Farm
Hardcourt Brace and Company 1946. Hardcourt Brace and Company1946 copyright no edition stated. Very Good/no dj. George Orwell in his critical writings shows imagination and taste; his wit is both edged and human Few writers of any period have been able to use the English language so simply and accurately to say what they mean and at the same time to mean something The news that he had written a satirical allegory telling the story of a revolution by farm animals against their cruel and dissolute master and of their subsequent fortunes was like the smell of a roast from a kitchen ruled by a good cook near the end of a hungry morning Orwell does know his farm animals and gives them vivid personalities Many will recognize Benjamin the donkey who never commits himself never hurries and thinks that in the end nothing much matters Mollie the saddle horse who wanders from the puritanical path of the revolution to seek ribbons for her mane the cat who never does any work. Blair Eric Arthur AKA George Orwell
Nineteen Eighty-Four
Harmondsworth Middlesex: Penguin Books Ltd 1979. Repaired; Light Creasing on Front Rear Covers Spine; Front Rear Covers Spine Lightly Chipped; Edges Lightly Soiled; Heavy Yellowing Due to Age. SUB-TITLE: A Novel. MOVIE/RADIO/TV TIE-IN: This novel was the basis for numerous film television and radio productions. SYNOPSIS: Newspeak Doublethink Big Brother the Thought Police--the language of 1984 has passed into the English language as a symbol of the horrors of totalitarianism. George Orwell's story of Winston Smith's fight against the all-pervading Party has become a classic not the least because of its intellectual coherence. First published in 1949 it retains as much relevance today as it had then. Eric Arthur Blair George Orwell was born in 1903 in India where his father worked for the Civil Service. The family moved to England in 1907 and in 1917 Orwell entered Eton where he contributed regularly to the various college magazines. He left in 1921 and joined the Indian Imperial Police in Burma the following year in which he served until 1928. His first published article appeared in Le Monde in October 1928 while Orwell was living in Paris and he returned to England in 1929 to take up work as a private tutor and later as a schoolteacher 1932. Down and Out in Paris and London was published in 1933. Due to his poor health Orwell gave up teaching and worked as a part-time assistant in a Hampstead bookshop and later was able to earn his living reviewing novels for the New English Weekly a post he kept until 1940. At the end of 1936 Orwell went to Spain to fight for the Republicans and was wounded. During the Second World War he was a member of the Home Guard and worked for the BBC Eastern Service from 1940 to 1943. As literary editor of Tribune he contributed a regular page of political and literary commentary. From 1945 Orwell was the Observer's war correspondent and later became a regular contributor to the Manchester Evening News. Orwell suffered from tuberculosis and was in and out of hospital from 1947 until his death in 1950. He was forty-six. His publications include The Road to Wigan Pier Coming Up for Air Keep the Aspidistra Flying and Homage to Catalonia. Orwell's name became widely known with the publication of Animal Farm and Nineteen Eight-Four both of which have sold more than two million copies. All Orwell's works have been published in Penguins.
