Mount Vernon NY: The Golden Eagle Press. Very Good. 1948. Hardcover. The spine is sun tanned and the cover cloth has the typical discoloration and spotting here and there. Slipcase has wear and loss of paper at all corners and spine tail.; This is a compilation of eight love poems by Abraham Cowley 1618-1667 prominent 17th C. English author satirist and eventually exiled Royalist. All poems are in period English and at least one is obliquely erotic. French surrealist Andre Masson provided the cover illustration misstated in the book as a frontispiece and two drawn plates on facing pages. The poems are written variously in 4 6 7 and 8-line stanzas the 6-line stanzas being his own unusual creation beginning with his early precocious but mature poetry. This edition is from The Golden Eagle Press founded by printer designer and typographer Samuel Aiwaz Jacobs. The poetic verses being a typographic challenge Jacobs set them to replicate Cowley's original spacing and justification. Set in old-style serif Janson types and printed on stiff mouldmade Tweedweave paper from James River Paper Co. Black pastedowns and endpapers. This narrow 8vo book is 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" and has 23 pp. These are eight love poems with meaning still most relevant.
