McCulloch, Hugh
Written in Florence: the Last Verses of Hugh McCulloch
London: J.M. Dent & Co. 1902. 12mo size green clothbound hardcover with gilt titles and decorations on spine and front cover deckle edged pages. Author portrait on frontispiece. This is the second volume of poetry from Hugh McCulloch 1869 - 1902 published posthumously. McCulloch died in Florence Italy in 1902. These poems were written during his sojourn there. The poet is the grandson and namesake of United States Treasury Secretary Hugh McCulloch. There is a note on fep circa 1905: "It may be of interest to the reader that the author of these poems was a direct descendant of the illegible Samuel Man the first clergyman at Wrentham Massachusetts through his grandmother Susan Man who married Hugh McCulloch Secretary of the Treasury under United States Presidents Lincoln Johnson and Arthur." There appears to be the signature of the accessioning librarian underneath this note but we're unable to make out the name. Ex-library with typical treatments some light soil to covers edgewear bumped heel of spine. . Cloth. Good/No Jacket. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Ex-Library. J.M. Dent & Co. Hardcover

John, Bryan
The World As Event: The Poetry of Charles Tomlinson
McGill Queens University Press 1989. 8vo size gray clothbound hardcover with dust jacket; 117 pages with one black and white photograph of Tomlinson From jacket: "The author suggested that the work of Charles Tomlinson should be granted equal prominence with the work of Philip Larkin and Ted Hughes. Tomlinson never an imitator has remained isolated from groups and uninfluenced by movements. Although his reputation as a major contemporary British poet was established early in the United States his work met with little notice in Great Britain. Even now he is more accepted and appreciated outside his homeland. Tomlinson suffers as did Keats and Tennyson from the accusation that his poetry is essentially "un-British." The author observes in his introduction that "Wherever he has sought enrichment of his art howeverr Tomlinson has remained intrinsically an English poet intent upon re-awakening English sensibilities to the real nature of the world." Light wear to jacket; bumped top corners under jacket; penciled price on fep. . Hard Cover. Good/Very Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. McGill Queens University Press Hardcover
