TOTAL RECALL
NY: Delacorte 2001. 1st edition September 2001 so stated with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. Total Recall follows the Chicago P.I. on a road that winds back more than fifty years and into an intricate maze of wartime lies heartbreaking secrets and harrowing retribution. For V.I. the journey begins with a national conference in downtown Chicago where angry protesters are calling for the recovery of Holocaust assets. Replayed on the evening news is the scene of a slight man who has stood up at the conference to tell an astonishing story of a childhood shattered by the Holocaust a story that has devastating consequences for V.I.s cherished friend and mentor Lotty Herschel. Lotty was a girl of nine when she emigrated from Austria to England one of a group of children wrenched from their parents and saved from the Nazi terror just before the war broke out. Now stunningly impossibly it appears that someone from that long-lost past may have returned. With the help of a recovered-memory therapist Paul Radbuka has recently learned his true identity. But is he who he claims to be Or is he a cunning impostor who has usurped someone elses history . a history Lotty has tried to forget for over fifty years With fierce emotional power Sara Paretsky has woven a gripping and morally complex novel of crime and punishment memory and illusion. . BLOOD SHOT AWARD WINNER
N.Y.: Delacorte 1988. 1st edition September 1988 slight spine slant else near fine in dust jacket. SHAMUS AWARD Nominee and SILVER DAGGER AWARD WINNER. Published in England as Toxic Shock. "The fifth and finest in Paretsky's praised series returns heroine Victoria V. I. Warshawski lawyer/private detective to describe mysterious circumstances arising from a seemingly insignificant case. A visit to a childhood friend in South Chicago Caroline Djiak ends with Warshawski agreeing to look for the father Caroline never knew and whom neither her mother Louisa although she's dying or maternal grandparents will name. Almost at once however Caroline begs the detective to stop the search. She is badly frightened when a co-worker in a neighboring recycling plant is murdered but Warshawski won't quit the investigation now that she suspects criminals have a bigger motive for killing than keeping the father's identify secret. The decision to fight on entangles V. I. with the powerful owner of a chemical company and his minions -- a venal doctor who falsifies employee records South Chicago's corrupt alderman a gangster profiteer with a stranglehold on the city's trash collections and thugs hired to kill "the snoop." It's a gripping entertaining story although sobering as a warning against thieving officials who pollute natural resources and rob the public." -- Publishers Weekly. First Edition. Hard Cover. FAMILY HONOR
N.Y.: G.P. Putnam"s Sons 1999. 1st edition with complete number line beginning with 1. Fine in fine dust jacket not price clipped in protective mylar cover. The first book in a new mystery series for Parker it's set in Boston and features Sunny Randall a female private detective. "She's Sunny Randall and she's a keeper. In some ways Sunny is a female Spenser. Like him she's a former cop now a Boston PI quick with a pistol and a quip. She teams with an odd sidekick Spike as Spenser teams with Hawk and she has a significant other an ex-husband to Spenser's Susan. But Sunny is female and as she explains in this wonderfully involving and moving novel that means that she can't rely on the compass of "Be a man" to orient toward life. How to live correctly is this novel's theme as it is in the best Spenser novels and to explore that theme Parker borrows situations from those novels. Sunny is hired by a powerful family to find their runaway daughter Millicent who it transpires is hooking and needs rescuingAlike the girl in Taming a Sea-Horse. Once saved from the streets Sunny trains Millicent in responsible adult ways--cooking exercise--as Spenser trained Paul in Early Autumn. But it's only a minor knock that Parker uses here elements honed in 30 years of writing for he uses them with consummate skill. Millicent it happens witnessed a conspiracy to murder arising from her cold ambitious parents--her father aims to be governor--and the Italian mobsters who control them. The mobsters now want her dead and Sunny too if need be. Sunny's fight to save Millicent and herself moves through a wide swath of Boston and its denizens all etched in Parker's lean and exquisitely cadenced prose. The high suspense is equaled by the emotional power of Sunny's bonding with the damaged girl. A bravura performance this novel launches what promises to be a series for the ages" -- Publishers Weekly . 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Book. G.P. Putnam"s Sons
