Williamson's first published work, 'The Beautiful Years' is the first of four in which he tells the story of 'one human unit of Europe immediately before and after the war'. The four titles are 'The Beautiful Years', 'Dandelion Days', 'The Dream of Fair Women' and 'The Pathway'. They were to be subtitled 'A Tale of Childhood', 'A Tale of Boyhood', 'A Tale of Youth' and 'A Tale of Life' through in the event only the first of these was used.
