‎[SPORTS], [WOMEN IN]‎

‎Girl Athletes & Women Record Breakers Photo Collection 1900-1940‎

‎1900. WOMEN IN SPORTS Curated photographic collection of 18 rare vintage photos celebrating girls and women in sports. Some are identified with names and locations. Locations include New Jersey Canada New York California Massachusettes. Dated approximately 1900-1940. Various sizes; mostly between 8.5" x 11" and 6.5x 8.5" with four smaller photos at 2.25" x 3.5". Black and white silver gelatin photographs. Many pieces show uniformed team photos and action shots documenting girls' increasingly rigorous participation in active sports in the first half of the 20th century. Sports include winter skiing ice skating fencing equestrian and polo bowling swimming track and field rugby. Many of the photos have extended captions on the verso. For example one photo features several Canadian swimmers in uniform in 1930 with the caption: "Swimming champions add to picturesque country at Lake Louise Canada. They are left to right: Agnes Geraghty Olympic swimmer; Catherine Ames Like Lindstrom Metropolitan Distance Champion; Constance Hanf Junior Metropolitan Champion; Eleanor Holm National Champion back stroke 100 and 200 yards; Georgia Colemen National Champion Diver. Miss Coleman is From Los Angeles while the other are members of the Women's Swimming Association New York. Another caption on a photo of several polo players states: "Southern California co-eds to form polo team sorority women at the University of Southern California are preparing to invade one of the few remaining sport sanctuaries of men- polo." Also included is a short of the American Women's Olympic Fencing Team which include: MMarion Lloyd Muriel Guggolz and Dorothy Locke.

Curated photographic archive celebrating female athletes who overcame stereotypes of women as the "weaker" sex. Because early social constructs regulated physical activity for women few were able to rise up as professional sports competitors until the 20th century. This archive is a testament to these women's historic strides revealing their early physical training their membership in early sport clubs as well as their most daring record-breaking feats. The collection depicts women participating in during the early 20th century. unknown‎

‎Report of the Executive Committee Annual Meeting of the . . . held at Hartford September 9 1870. Tracts of Connecticut Woman Suffrage Association No. 2. . . .‎

‎Hartford CT: Printed by Case Lockwood & Brainard 1871. 8vo. 24 pp. Self-printed softcovers sewn at spine slight age toning very slight dustsoiling still NF copy. First edition of the second scarce Women’s Suffrage tract published by the pioneering Connecticut Woman Suffrage Association CWSA in 1871 subsequent to their second Annual Meeting held in 1870. This tract features the extended letter to Chicago IL suffragette and editor Myra Bradwell from Judge Howe of Wyoming detailing women serving as jurors on a murder trial jury after the passage of the Wyoming Territory’s 1869 Suffrage Act and that they discharged their duties with skill and also refutes the spurious claims that the men and women jurors had been improperly sequestered together for 4 days and nights. Following the publication of this tract Howe was replaced as a judge in the First District by Joseph Fisher a Union Army veteran who refused to recognize women being in the jury pool or allowed to set on juries even though they did have the right to vote. Isabella has also incorporated suffrage reports from the National Society for Woman Suffrage in England including specific mentions of petitions before Parliament in 1869 & 1870 on the admission of women to the suffrage by Lydia E. Becker along with excerpts of speeches by Mill delivered to the London Society of Woman Suffrage.Hooker closes with a report on a proposal by the Executive Committee to send women to meet with small local committees to “obtain signatures to the petitions for a 16th Amendment and to circulate tracts on the subject of Equal Suffrage.†See: Jessica Jenkins The Long Road to Women’s Suffrage in Connecticut Connecticut Explored Vol. 14 No. 2 Spring 2016; Kim Viner Women on the Jury: Wyoming Makes History Again Wyoming Historical Society Encyclopedia Jan. 23 2020.

‎Florence Ala: The Church 1931. Octavo 22.5 x 14.5 cm. x 151 xxix pages. Advertisements. Table of contents. Stated Second Edition likely a corrected printing of the first edition. An evidently well-received collection of nine hundred recipes following closely upon the first edition of only two years previous with the same 151 pages. Southern favorites stand in relief: Southern Egg Bread Okra Gumbo Bishop Whipple Pudding Ambrosia Owendaw Asparagus Loaf Blackeye Peas Elder Blossom Wine Creole Pralines. But it would be misleading to truncate the story there for the Women of Trinity Guild could venture out as eagerly as their counterparts elsewhere from Almond Bisque and Lobster Canapes to Queen of Trifles and Banberry sic Tarts. Marginalia on page 110 comments on the Sponge Cake fine “…grand but a lot of workâ€. For more local color an advertisement on the rear of wrappers is for “Dowdy’s Pit Bar-B-Q Fish-Chili Lee Highway.†~ Florence is a well-known constituent municipality of The Shoals in Alabama’s northwestern corner the birthplace of W. ‎Florence Alabama: The Church 1943. Octavo 23 x 15.5 cm. 171 v pages. Advertisements. Errata list page 1. Cover title. Table of contents. Third Edition. A generous helping of more than nine hundred recipes clearly an act of perseverance to review and produce during wartime. Southern favorites stand in relief: Cracklin Bread Hush Puppies Ambrosia Daube Glacé Cabbage Au Gratin Creole Peas Fried Bananas Black Bottom Pie Pecan Cake. But this is a substantial revision of the second edition and the Women of Trinity Guild were noting with interest recipes from beyond their immediate sphere as much as was the case anywhere else. Three early instances of Italian-American spaghetti exemplify the cuisine's transition from "peasant" food to household staple. Florence is a well-known constituent municipality of The Shoals in Alabama's northwestern corner the birthplace of W. C. Handy and by extension it is often said the birthplace of the Blues. The seat of Lauderdale County the city and the surrounding region had become prosperous through its abundant access to water power early in the nineteenth century. Though not the first Episcopalian congregation established in Alabama – Anglicans had already settled in Mobile and Tuscaloosa – Trinity Church founded in 1836 and still an active community lays claim to the title of oldest parish in the Tennessee Valley. With most sewn from durable and long wearing cotton duck cloth the company presents here multiple service ensembles for kitchen staff dining rooms and taverns many with decidedly Art Deco lines and patterns. Featuring a tall white hat with a crown double-breasted white coat cloth buttons sewn to the sides and reversible layers of cloth to protect from heat and grease splatter and even cuffs which could be turned down to function as hot pads. Within a couple years Cherubino with Carmine supplying the uniforms founded the Angelica Corporation and after her death his second wife Therese Hirsch del Angelica b. 1855 would join the company and oversaw the introduction of the iconic Harvey Girls uniforms. Some toning to prelims else clean internally and very good.

Quite scarce utopian novel printed in Los Angeles and penned by Carra Depuy Henley 1869-1905. Though the copyright date states 1891 this story appeared in book form in 1901. We find little about Henley other than she died in her Los Angeles home at the age of 35 and this was her only output. Locke in his Voyages in Space describes the story:

"An accident enables a man to have clairvoyant visions of Mars which is an extension of Heaven - a paradise of departed souls where bodies are translucent. The scientists of Mars have overcome the force of gravity enabling them to ride the 'ether waves' on electric currents and other achievements include prolongation and creation of life and transmutation of metals listed rather that described."

An interesting fantasy publication by a woman author on the West Coast at the turn of the century. OCLC cites 6 holdings.

Bleiler checklist pg 98. Locke Spectrum of Fantasy 110-11 Voyages in Space 105. ‎[VOTES FOR WOMEN].‎

‎THE STATUTES OF NEW ZEALAND:‎

‎FIRST EDITION. 4to pp. viii 539 1 blank; light foxing to title and a few minor spots in places but otherwise clean throughout;

in contemporary cloth spine lettered in gilt expertly recased spine and boards rather sunned back board creased along centre; with the contemporary ownership stamps of 'Hampden Borough Council' at head of title and front free endpaper; a very good copy of this important document.

In spite of it's dour title and rather dry subject matter this is a significant work indeed a landmark publication in the history of 'votes for women': The Statutes of New Zealand fourth session of the eleventh parliament 1893 contains the first printed acknowledgement of a woman's right to vote.

On 19 September 1893 the governor Lord Glasgow signed a new Electoral Act into law. This is found in the present work as Act 18 'An Act to amend and consolidate the Law relating to the qualification and registration of electors and the conduct of elections of members of the house of representatives' p. 35 in which it is noted that where the context of "person" is stated this 'includes woman' p. 37. As a result of this landmark legislation New Zealand became the first self-governing country in the world to grant all women the right to vote in parliamentary elections.

'The suffrage campaign in New Zealand began as a far-flung branch of a broad late-19th-century movement for women's rights that spread through Britain and its colonies the United States and northern Europe. This movement was shaped by two main themes: equal political rights for women and a determination to use them for the moral reform of society through for example the prohibition of alcohol.

New Zealand's pioneering suffragists were inspired both by the equal-rights arguments of philosopher John Stuart Mill and British feminists and by the missionary efforts of the American-based Women's Christian Temperance Union WCTU. A number of New Zealand's leading male politicians including John Hall Robert Stout Julius Vogel William Fox and John Balance supported women's suffrage. In 1878 1879 and 1887 bills or amendments extending the vote to women or at least female ratepayers only narrowly failed to pass in Parliament.

Outside Parliament the movement gathered momentum from the mid-1880s especially following the establishment of a New Zealand WCTU in 1885. Skilfully led by Kate Sheppard WCTU campaigners organised a series of huge petitions to Parliament: in 1891 over 9000 signatures were gathered in 1892 almost 20000 and finally in 1893 nearly 32000 were obtained – representing almost a quarter of the adult European female population in New Zealand' see http://www.nzhistory.net.nz/politics/womens-suffrage/brief-history.

In most other democracies - notably Britain and the United States - women did not win the right to the vote until after the First World War. Not listed separately on OCLC but found amongst various sets of the Statutes recorded. hardcover‎
