‎[Women and Money] [Financial Estates] [Financial Autonomy] Mary Ann Tritch Rogers‎

‎Collection Relating to the Financial Empire of a Woman & her Daughter‎

‎Colorado; Massachusetts 1942. Hailing from an immigrant family that rose to prominence in the West Mary Tritch Rogers and her daughter Georgette Houston were often overlooked in their own time in favor of the family patriarchs. Mary's father George Tritch 1829-1899 was after all a German immigrant whose evolution from downtrodden pioneer to millionaire rail road and real estate magnate was documented in Sketches of Colorado 1911 and celebrated in numerous newspaper and society articles in his lifetime. Meanwhile Mary's husband Benjamin W. Rogers 1842-1917 was Colorado's first dentist and a community cornerstone. Yet the present collection reveals that Mary and Georgette after her were more than ballroom delights. Savvy investors and business women in their own quiet way they built and maintained their own empire even in the face of scandal marital separation and disinheritance. Without the documents preserved here we might never know their story.

The territory and later state of Colorado had varying property laws for women across Mary's emergence to adulthood. It was a space where white male settlers drastically outnumbered their female counterparts; and when statehood in 1876 stripped women of suffrage there was little incentive for men to vote to reinstate it immediately. That said the increasing number of Married Women's Property Acts extending across the US did provide expanded protections for women to have control over their own wages their inheritance their land ownership and their investments. Mary Tritch Rogers used this to her benefit as portions of this collection show. Taking the allowances given her first by her father and later her husband she was able to grow her own little empire based in stock investments real estate purchases and interest earned from rents and loans to members of the community. This financial privilege allowed her to legally separate from her husband and her unhappy marriage in 1900 signing over $15925 -- or $576000 today -- for his promise to depart peacefully and disconnect from her. It also allowed her to survive disinheritance from her father -- something reported by newspapers following his death and potentially connected to the public scandal of her separation. Along with her daughter she relocated to Massachusetts for the remainder of her life. Though newspapers suggested this was for her “health†it’s far more likely that the distance from her estranged husband and perhaps even Massachusetts’ own property laws were a larger appeal.

With her independent wealth Mary Tritch Rogers was also able to provide freedoms for her daughters that weren't available to her. Georgette would be widowed early on in her marriage and lived as a single mother to her children William and Dorothy. Account books from her household show however a comfortable life similar to her mother's. According to the 1910 and 1920 US Censuses she took up residence near Boston Massachusetts with her children and mother keeping at least one maid. Yet neither women list employments other than head of household. Notably neither show signs of remarrying either. By the time of Mary's death in 1935 her estate was valued at $269458 -- or $6.02 million today. A full accounting of her assets and debts owed for settlements and funeral expenses is included.

The research rich assortment of ledgers checkbooks letters travel and stock documents legal materials and other personal ephemera give scholars an opportunity to examine not only the individual lives of these women but also how their financial savvy contributed to or harmed the white and Indigenous communities around them. To what extent did these women's lives in Colorado in Europe where Mary lived for a time or in Massachusetts expand or contract based on the localities' laws surrounding women's finances And to what extent did the women replicate or depart from some of the more fiscally aggressive and harmful practices of the men around them

Collection contains:

Mary Tritch Rogers' Loans and Banking Ledger 1894-1898
Quarter roan over printed cloth with handwritten ownership title to front board. Measuring 235 x 185mm and containing 22 pages including pastedowns. ‎[Women and Race] [BIPOC] Mecracken, Sara L.‎

‎Elsie Ainslie A Victim of Social Wrong‎

‎Springfield Mass: Star Publishing Co 1885. First edition. Near Fine. Two variants of the first edition both in publisher's printed wraps lettered in red to front. Both exceptional survivors one in untrimmed wraps with some offsetting to the rear and fore-edges a bit chipped. Preliminary and terminal leaves uniformly toned else internally fresh. Collating 2 108 with adverts to interior of wraps. Second copy in trimmed wraps complete in 108 pages with dedication to verso of front wrap and adverts to recto of rear wrap issued without title page. Some toning to the first and final leaves else fresh. A scarce work considering the sexual dangers faced by women including women of color in a society that inadequately prepares them for male treachery. OCLC reports 8 first editions at libraries. The present pairing gives researchers a unique opportunity to study the print history of this rare work on gender and race.

A contemporary publisher's advertisement for Sara Mecracken's tale of "social wrong" touts it as the story of "a beautiful pure young girl from New York" who is courted kidnapped and forced into marriage; and the publishers market her tragedy as "thrilling dramatic and touching.appropriate for the home of every mother who would prepare her daughters to meet the dangers of society." Such an overview focused on sensational thrills and conservative morality belie the sharp social critique that Mecracken delivers to white patriarchy. At its opening the book introduces us to an elderly Elsie. Watching her innocent grandson play she realizes that she has an opportunity to counteract a violent system in some small way by educating him to value the bodily rights and autonomy of women: "No he shall not be one to mar the life of the innocent nor wear the victor's crown of debauchery and wrong; my few remaining days shall be devoted to pluck one brand from the seething hell of social wrong. He shall be taught the true responsibilities which belong to his own soul."

As the narrative unfolds the reader learns that in her youth Elsie a white woman trusted her suitor Albert Ainslie who would go on to sexually assault her abduct her and force her into marriage. Painfully aware now of her own vulnerability within the sexual economy she further learns that she is not the only woman Albert has victimized: he also assaulted Mira and Dora women of color "beautiful creole" girls who went on to be institutionalized and die by suicide. Women of any race are commodified and devalued by the system Albert operates within. Yet even they have stratified levels of empowerment. That the narrative comes from Elsie's perspective is notable. The suggestion persists throughout that Elsie' racial purity allowed for her survival her coerced marriage rather than abandonment and the chance to procreate and change the future through her offspring. Preserved by her whiteness she is freed from patriarchal oversight by the story's end in a way no other women are -- her father is fatally shot by Albert while attempting to free her and Albert subsequently flees to California and dies of alcoholism. No longer a victim but a survivor and a free woman under the legal system she can become a savior to future generations of women by preventing at least one boy from growing into violent manhood. In this sense Mecracken's story is progressive and conservative placing blame for systemic violence on the patriarchy while placing responsibility for its solution on individual women. Near Fine. ‎[Women and Education] Flora Yagle‎

‎Fulton Pittsburgh School District School Exercise Book‎

‎Fulton Pittsburgh 1900. Faux cloth over marbled boards with ownership label to upper left corner with school district and compiler information. Measuring 9 x 11.5 inches and comprised of 22 pages of sketches herbal specimens and sample essays all recto. Firmly bound and with some dampstaining to the lower gutter not affecting text. Representing a range of exercises completed by state normal school student Flora Yagle the book presents researchers with a range of study opportunities including turn of the century pedagogical practice and curricula as well as genealogical and social history work regarding the family structure work and education of first-generation immigrants living on the East Coast.

One of seven children born to German immigrants Flora Yagle b. 1886-7 clearly grew up in a family that emphasized education and upward mobility. The paper label identifies Yagle as an eighth-year student indicating that she was probably in her early teens when she completed these lessons. Census documents from around the time of her birth and childhood list her father as a foundry worker; and into her adulthood they shift to record him as the general manager of the foundry. Similar ambition was instilled in his children who are documented in census information as students or unemployed during their childhoods with work only appearing in their adulthoods. During Flora's youth she had brothers working as clerks and bookkeepers. By the time of her adulthood she has become a school clerk while her sister has obtained a position as a librarian.

Part of Flora's training would have been conducted at the Fulton Elementary School located in Pittsburgh's Highland Park. A neighborhood for the rising middle class Highland Park and its schools were still in their infancy while Flora was in hers; while the residential district had been opened in 1879 the school was founded in 1894 and both intended to provide fresh air open spaces and pleasant living to skilled workers and their families who were flocking to Pittsburgh for its work opportunities. Historically Pennsylvania had been a vanguard for public and progressive education. "In his 1830 address to the state legislature Governor George Wold championed the cause of universal public education" as a scaffold for "the security and stability of the individual privileges we have inherited from our ancestors" Explore History. Before the decade was over "more than 1000 local school districts under a single statewide system of instruction" had been founded working to regularize "educational standards curriculum and instructional credentials" in tandem with the 1857 Normal School Act which founded "a network of ten state academies to prepare public school teachers" Explore History.

Flora's generation was a beneficiary of these policies. Her notebook shows a range of work with creativity and visual arts central to her learning. In addition to pressed floral specimens likely from the school grounds or her home garden her book also contains a visual and textual representation of the spectrum of colors in a rainbow; illustrated lotus blossoms with a short essay on the botanical facts and cultural uses of the flower in Egypt; black and white sketches focused on perspective and shading; geometrical figures designed to be cut out and folded but here present; and figure drawings of children in Victorian clothing much like she and her classmates would wear.

US Census 1890 1900 1910 1920. unknown‎

‎San Francisco: Towne and Bacon Publishers 1866. First edition. Hardcover. Good. 72pp. Sextodecimo 19.5 cm Brown cloth titled in gilt. Yellow endpapers. Ex-college library coby with only penciled numbers to copyright page and rear pastedown else no other library markings. The backstrip has broken off and some pieces are laid in. The text block is cracked at the beginning. Sarah Elizabeth Carmichael a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints came to the Salt Lake Valley in 1850. She nurtured her literary talent despite pioneer Utah's limited educational resources. Her first signed poem Truth was published in the Deseret News in 1858. Over the next eight years the paper would publish fifty more of her poems. Her poems also appeared in the Daily Union Vedette and the Mormon feminist newspaper Woman's Exponent. Sarah was also recognized outside of Utah. For example William Cullen Bryant anthologized her poem Stolen Sunbeam retitling it "The Origin of Gold." Her most famous poem is President Lincoln's Funeral which is included in this work. Due to the fact that most of her poems were published in newspapers the span of her work may never be known.

In 1866 Carmichael who was an opponent of polygamy married Jonathan M. Williamson an army doctor of non-Mormon background alienating her somewhat in her environment. Soon after her marriage Sarah began to experience a drastic mental decline which continued to progress for thirty years. She spent her final years in a mental hospital. ‎Archive of Letters on the Administration of Female Seminaries 1850-1900‎

‎Archive of 7 letters totaling 18 pages spanning the years 1845-1900. The letters detail the administration of women's seminaries during a time when these institutes were being created to offer educational opportunities for female students as they prepared to become teachers. One admissions letter addressed to the father of two students reads “Dear Sir I am happy to inform you that your daughters can be admitted to the Seminary agreeably to your request. And that rooms will be selected and and reserved for them. The next term will commence on Thursday the 15th.†In a series of letters written between teachers cheerful complaints are detailed " I like teaching very well though I think I have found more pleasure in studying. I like it so long as I can keep my class interested. Sometime I can easily do this at other times I find it more difficult then it is that I get discouraged and think that it would be easier for me to learn a lesson and recite it myself than to see that a half dozen mischievous girls get theirs." During the mid-nineteenth century female seminaries were a cultural phenomenon succeeded the family-like environment of boarding schools to be structured more like men's colleges. The development of the female intellect was seen as a responsibility one educators took seriously. In one somewhat humorous letter on the rigor of examinations a professor writes “I have been more busily engaged than even you can imagine. I took it into my head to get up a semi-annual Examination which draws heavily upon my time and energies and to cap the whole I narrowly escaped the loss of one of my eyes. A piece of red hot burning coal few into it.†A letter written from a professor to student reveals the mentorship fostered in these institutions "Dear Madam I am entering your name as a candidate for the Classical Scholarship. The examination will take place on Wednesday Thursday & Friday the 14th 15th & 16th of March at Newnham College. You will have to come to Cambridge on Tuesday probably in time to read for the examination on Wednesday morning but most likely you will & leave on Friday afternoon. If you would like us to arrange for board and lodging for you please let us know. It will cost you 3 / b per night." The seminaries were private institutions without public funding so finding donors was imperative. In one letter a John P.LeRoy writes to a friend asking for such an investment “Mr. Boyd of the Monroe Female Seminary said that if you could furnish capital enough he did not know but he would like to take you as a partner in his school but as I supposed from what he intended that he would want a partner with some three thousand dollars at least to invest.†In a letter written by one headmaster after being let go from his position the administrative structure of the seminary is alluded to "I regard the action of the Committee as neither just kind nor courteous…Up to the meeting of the Comm. In May I had never received any intimation that the Comm. or the patrons of the school were dissatisfied with my administration." And in one snapshot of student life during a measles outbreak in Ohio dated 1873 a student writes to her mother “I thought I would write and ask you if I have ever had the Measles as we have them in school now. If I have not I don’t want to have them here. One of the girls is going home Saturday. She is exposed and has never had them & she is going home to have them. This is a mighty poor place to get sick. I never thought the Measles ended in such serious things as they do sometimes that is if you get cold. The girls were talking about the different way in which they effect persons. The mumps are raging too.â€

These letters give a unique portrait of the administrative obstacles and successes across a small set of female seminaries during these institutions burgeoning years. unknown‎
