A likely very early American printing of two pieces tied directly to the upheavals of 1848 issued just as news and personalities of the European revolutions were electrifying American audiences. The first “Der Lieben Warnun†Love’s Warning is attributed to Ludwig I King of Bavaria whose abdication in March 1848 followed the political scandal surrounding his relationship with Lola Montez. The second “Les Girondins: Mourir pour la Patrie†with text by Alexandre Dumas and music by Alphonse Varney is one of the most popular revolutionary hymns of the period here presented in English and French. At center is the finely printed lithographic portrait of Lola Montez born Eliza Rosanna Gilbert 1821–1861 identified as “Countess of Landsfeld.†Produced by Sarony & Major the image reflects her brief but consequential position in Bavaria where Ludwig elevated her to the nobility and granted her influence at court. Her presence became politically explosive; student unrest and ministerial crisis forced both her exile and the King’s abdication making her a widely discussed celebrity at the time. <br /> <br /> Montez arrived in the United States in late 1848 quickly converting this notoriety into a touring career. She performed her “Spanish dances†including the sensational “Spider Dance†on stages from New York to New Orleans and later turned to lecturing advertising appearances on “Heroines of History†beauty and personal independence. During the early 1850s she followed the western circuit appearing in San Francisco during the Gold Rush where she commanded high fees and played to packed houses of miners and merchants. She toured through Australia in 1855–56 before returning to the United States where she settled in New York and shifted increasingly toward writing and reform-minded lectures before her death in 1861 possibly of syphilis. The piece was published by Joseph Atwill at his 201 Broadway location which he would abandon soon after to board the steamer Crescent City to Chagres eventually making his way to San Francisco and opening Atwill’s Music Store on Washington St. possibly San Francisco’s first music store before heading off to the mines and then returning to San Francisco a year later to open another music store. Faust-Newton 1889-1975 was an avid traveler earned several degrees gave lectures on her excursions and amassed a sizable collection of antiquities and Asian artifacts later used to fill their museum. She is perhaps best remembered in her former Highland Park neighborhood of Dallas for the decades-long legal fights with the city over her mock 3-story yacht S.S. Miramar scene of parties and tourist attraction the 1938 kidnapping of an African-American employee accused of stealing a “priceless†jade ring never found and the sustained pranking and vandalism campaign contributing to her deepening sense of paranoia. Scruggs 1892-1988 was a noted Dallas TX etcher illustrator writer author designer and artist descendant of noted Kentucky Portrait Painter Sam Woodson Price and taught at SMU. Lord states in part: "I send you a correct statement of the arrests of the women and leave you to do as you see fit with it. I told him that I had no one to train in his company; that we were all Dorrites.". Also prints "Addenda No. 243: Copy of an indictment against Mrs. Abbey H. Lord" signed in type by "Joseph M. Blake. Drawing of Grapes awarded 1st prize for the year 1829 from the French drawing school "École Royalle et Gratuite de Dessin pour les Jeunes Personnes
1829. An intricate drawing of a bunch of grapes a survival from the Age of Enlightenment in France first prize in the annual competition given to a young woman by one of the women who ran the school. Free drawing schools were established in France from the 1740s onward with the aim of training and supporting poor children. The painter Ferrand de Monthelon was concerned about idleness of children after leaving school age 10 and before beginning apprenticeship age 15. The schools were supported by charitable donations and aimed to form the sound basis for further training in a dizzying list of trades. One of the most prominent free drawing schools was established in Paris by the painter Jean-Jacques Bachelier former artistic director of the royal porcelain manufacture at Sevres in 1766. Called "Ecole royale gratuite de dessin" it was initially only open to men. Bachelier was critical of the Guilds apprenticeship training as expensive and uninspiring. It continues today as "École nationale superieur des arts decoratifs".<br /> <br /> This drawing is a survival from another school that also trained women run by women. According to the "Almanach Royal et National pour l'An 1839" this school was directed by two sisters the Misses Frère de Montizon for young people destined to working in the arts and industrial professions. They were instructed in drawing & lithography. There was an annual prize awarded and honorable mentions instituted in 1828 the year before this drawing was done. The judges were the "Membres de la Commission de surveillance" and the artwork was publicly exhibited. The drawing is signed by Mlle Justine Frère de Montizon M. David and M. Garnier the judges & members of the "Commission". <br /> <br /> Inscribed "École royalle et gratuite de dessin pour les jeunes personnes / concours pour les prix de l'an 1829 ce 27 juillet. Mlle. T. McClure vs. the Salvation Army. Supreme Court of the United States Case No. 72-134
New York 1972. Hardcover. Very good condition. Personal copy of the inside documents which won the sex discrimination case in favor of the Salvation Army belonging to William J. Moss 1921 - 2005 partner at Cadwalader Wickersham and Taft and valued advisor to The Salvation Army. The McClure case was a leading case for establishing the doctrine of "ministerial exception" having settled the law upon all points involved in such case in 1964. <br /> <br /> This is the private record of newspaper articles motions filed complaints opinion and orders and briefs concerning the important 1972 sex discrimination suit brought against the Salvation Army by a female plaintiff who sued the organization for receiving lower pay as a female employee than her male counterparts. Billie B. McClure served as a Salvation Army officer the equivalent of an ordained minister; after complaining that male officers were receiving higher salaries and better benefits than females she was fired.<br /> <br /> The case was pursued all the way to the Supreme Court with the decision rendered in the favor of the Salvation Army with the stipulation that as a religious institution the Salvation Army was not subject to the equal employment requirements as established in Title VII of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. The doctrine announced in McClure became known as the “ministerial exception" and in the years since the ruling nearly all of the nation’s federal appeals courts have embraced it. <br /> <br /> The record is a presentation copy from Harry Lamon to William Moss partner Cadwalader Wickersham and Taft New York. Presentation inscription at ffe thanking Moss for his "wise counsel" in the McClure case; signed Harry Lamon dated 5/15/73. Lamon was an Atlanta attorney for the Salvation Army. Thick 4to black cloth binder approx. 3" thick title in gilt at spine. Not continuously paginated but approximately 400pp in 30 numbered tabbed sections of photocopied documents. hardcover

Hand color wood engraved image of early women's' field hockey game depicted in the individualistic style of Lucien Davis 1860-1951 who specialized in women in sport. the painting was exhibited at the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. In all 19 young women are depicted mostly in boaters carrying their wooden hockey sticks. Havre de Grace. American Naval officer's widow boarding house invitation
Havre France: H. Bret Rue de Paris 86 1840. Very good condition. The widow of Captain Latham's printed invitation to "American Officers" stationed in this French port town for the boarding house which she has just opened. Mrs. Latham's new venture is located at No. 44 Rue de Dauphine "where every essential comfort will be provided. Their patronage is most respectfully solicited". <br /> <br /> The officer seems to be Rev. George Latham a US Naval officer who died in January 1847 aged about 40. He is buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery in Norfolk Virginia. According to U.S. Officers of the Continental and U.S. Navy and Marine Corps 1775-1900 he was a chaplain. His wife was Lucy Taylor Mauzy. It is not clear that she ever had ever been in France but through the Ancestry website she is listed as a widow in Virginia in 1850 and 1860. There is no evidence that her husband had any connection to Paris or even that he was involved in any conflict. She could have left the country after the Civil War as her last children would have been grown. Reference provided on request.<br /> <br /> The printer at Havre was H. Bret who obtained 18 March 1839 a license to lithograph printing and was installed at a modest studio at no. 86 rue de la rue de Paris. He printed drawings and caricatures in satirical journals notably in the Courrier d'Ingouville d'Autin. He worked until 1870.<br /> <br /> 5 1/2 x 8 1/4" lithograph printed on one side. H. A manuscript commonplace predominantly concerning the character of women

Marbled endpapers contemporary inked gift inscription and later manuscript note on the provenance of the volume in the hand of a descendent of the original compiler to front blank fly-leaf. A late Georgian manuscript commonplace in a single legible hand comprised predominantly of texts concerning the female character marriage love and virtue. The volume contains a plethora of extracts from published authors both prose and verse including Romantic poets Byron and Wordsworth philosopher Edmund Burke Scottish presbyterian minister James Fordyce Washington Irving and Shakespeare. The manuscript opens with a seemingly original two-page composition concerning the temperament constitution and attributes of women: 'The all-powerful influence of woman - the irresistible control of her attractions - the exquisite and undefinable combination of mind and form - belong not exclusively to any rank or age or country; they are the natural characteristics of humanity all the world over:- hers is an universal empire'. The volume was presented to 'Chuff' from her affectionate 'Wills'; the mid-twentieth century note concerning provenance ascribes the compilation to 'Mr. Sims' though erroneously suggests that it was 'probably compiled.about the time of Waterloo'. . 8vo. Archive of Diaries Recording the Unusually Bold and Independent Life of Jessie Tibbits Cochrane Willets
Various locations 1936. Good plus. Fifteen notebooks each about 6.5 x 4 inches; totaling approximately 200000 words. Some notebooks without covers scattered soiling some biopredation or wear. Written in ink and pencil. Diary archive of Jessie Tibbits Cochrane Willets a Long Island native who traveled extensively and wasn't afraid to speak her mind and be her own person. Throughout her diaries she expresses frustration at being shunned by her family undervalued and subject to gossip but is fiercely determined to live life on her terms. She is often traveling solo driving her own car staying in rooming houses or hotels and feeling she has no home of her own. She regularly renews her pistol license. She goes to the theater in New York attends lectures and meetings of women workers the League of Women Voters and speeches by Margaret Sanger. She believes strongly that women have a right to their own bodies. She reads widely and mentions stories in the newspapers of the Lindbergh kidnapping and the mistreatment of Black people in the South. She remarks on books she is reading writes of the men she encounters and notes the opinions of others about her lifestyle and liaisons. Through these diaries the life of a singular woman of the early 20th century is revealed. Jessie 1869-1943 was born in Nassau County New York the oldest of three children and the only girl. The Tibbits were early residents of Long Island an old colonial family and Tibbits Place was one of the oldest establishments on the island. Her father was one of the founders and first President of the Port Washington National Bank and started a real estate business in 1901 and the family was quite comfortable and respectable. Jessie married William Cochrane in 1890 though they divorced at some point and by 1910 she had moved home and was considered a bit of a disgrace as a result. In 1929 she married Nathaniel Louis Willet 1851-1933 and was subsequently able to live out the rest of her days on a more comfortable footing. She died in Palm Beach Florida. The diaries in this collection include the years 1910 to 1912 1917 1918 1921 to 1923 1927 in three parts 1928 1930 to 1932 1934 to 1936 and 1941; they therefore cover almost the entirety of her adult life.<br /> <br /> The first diary here begins with "let the past be the past" and opens with details of a trip to Europe in 1910. Starting in Gibraltar she travels all over Italy and then on to France and England. Though often discussing the company of the other passengers it seems she made the trip alone. In Genoa she has "a bad dream of Bill trying to kill me again" and one speculates that fleeing her husband may be part of the impetus for a European jaunt. Arriving home in October she feels distinctly unwelcome at the family homestead and can't wait to leave again. By June of 1911 she had moved to a rooming house in San Diego. She has made the acquaintance of a Reverend and often waits for him to come by and see her noting that he would marry her if she had enough money to support him so he could leave the clergy. Another woman in town is also vying for his affections. At the same time she is seeing another man named Baxter and when things get tense she leaves for short excursions to Los Angeles or Santa Barbara. On her return one time to San Diego she decides to take her own apartment so she can entertain gentlemen callers without being spied upon. In February 1912 she receives a letter warning her that a Mr. Warren was planning on calling her to the stand in his divorce proceedings. It is unknown what came of these upheavals.<br /> <br /> Her next diary begins in January 1918 with a hope for the end of the war and a strong statement on the value of women in the world: "Woman is slowly awakening to the realization of her position -- God grant she may see true Mother of Man -- this world is only as great as her women -- I blame men and out of this new knowledge there will grow a new world." She is traveling once again and mentions yet another gentleman friend. By the end of January she was in Miami. She went to hear William Jennings Bryan speak and found him a strong "man of the people." Someone asks her why she is not married and she wonders "is this fault all mine" She also says she believes "there is no real advantage in virtue if it chills and diminishes passion." While on an excursion by boat on the Indian River she considers whether she should "take up Mr. Rich -- but I am tired of old men." By March she had started back north by train to St. Augustine Charleston Charlotte and on to Danville Virginia where she spent the night. "The streets are hilly the shops are good but anywhere the old men stand on street corners spit and look insults to the women -- I would like to castrate a few of the old fools." By 1921 she is unhappily back with her family. Of her mother she writes: "God help a woman that has so much hatred in her heart." She spends time in the city at the theatre and lectures including one by Margaret Sanger advocating birth control: "Mrs. Sanger said all nurses and clinics should have the power to control birth and give a woman the right to know her own body and have the right to it." Jessie continued to advocate for birth control and a woman's right to her own body for the remainder of her life as mentioned in these diaries. Altogether a lengthy and fascinating account of one woman's life at the turn of the century. unknown

The text includes twenty-one letters on various subjects including confidence prudence jealousy self-love religion conviction friendship the dance conversation domestic economyetc. The final portion of the text is a guide to studies including fine arts science geography theatre poetry and novels. The author notes recommends Corneille Racine Ossian Milton Voltaire Goldoni and many others and notes that the English have produced the best novelists citing the names of Richardson Defoe Smollett Fielding Goldsmith Sir Walter Scott Ann Radcliffe and many others. Patriotic subscription by French women to help liberate occupied departments.
<p><strong>Rare Parisian poster for the Souscription patriotique des femmes de France.</strong></p><p>It was part of the liberation of French territory following the Frankfurt Peace Treaty signed between the French Republic and the German Empire on May 10 1871. France was obliged to pay war indemnities of 5 billion francs.</p><p>Thiers' government launched an international loan and paid part of the sum so that by the end of 1871 German soldiers had evacuated the occupied territories remaining only in the city of Belfort and six departments of eastern France including the Ardennes.</p><p><strong>March 1872 the date of this poster marked the start of private initiatives to speed up repayment of the remaining war indemnity and liberate the last occupied territories as quickly as possible.</strong><br />The Souscription patriotique des femmes de France was part of this national and local movement. "<em>The Charleville municipal archives . contain documents relating to the local committee of this association. They show that after dividing the town into neighborhoods the women of this association knocked on the doors of every inhabitant to obtain cash donations or pledges." .</em> <em>"Despite this state support the subscription did not reach its target of 500 million francs and the subscribers were reimbursed. Group Portrait of Female Mill Workers Lawrence Massachusetts c. 1880s
Lawrence 1880. Albumen photograph on card stock 7 ¾ x 4 ½ inches. Good. Working conditions were notoriously bad in Lawrence one of the industrial hubs of the textile industry in the late nineteenth century after the harnessing of the Merrimack River’s water power in 1845. The city was a hub of immigration - mostly Irish - and many immigrants who were familiar with mill work flocked to the city in the 1850s. In 1860 an accident at the Pemberton Mill killed 145 workers. The Bread and Roses strike of 1912 also known as the Lawrence Textile Strike was the culmination of decades of poor working conditions. This uncommon occupational photograph of female mill workers gives scant clues as to the background of the workers or specifics of the factory. We find no record of the photographer a J.J. Greene based in Lawrence. The seven women pictured are mostly looking off-camera suggesting that the photographer had a companion. The date is unknown but the albumen cabinet card format and general feel suggest a date of 1880s-1890s. <br /> <br /> An uncommon occupational photograph of women in Lawrence’s mills. Good condition overall fading to image and some light foxing verso with tears from tape removal. unknown

Near Fine. <br /> <br /> A plea to California women voters to support America's entry to the League of Nations. The cover graphic portrays a WW1 doughboy missing both his legs being carried into his home by a pair of mates. The interior text argues that the League of Nations at this time being actively opposed by the Republican majority in Congress was the only sure path to preventing a repeat of the horrors of the Great War. An interesting and fairly early attempt to mobilize the women's vote; equal suffrage had been granted in California in 1911. Photograph Album of roughly 1400 Pictures Taken by a Young Woman with a Connection to the Cabot Family of Boston Showing a Modern Eye for Composition Circa 1930
Boston 1930. Oblong quarto 49 pp. With appx. 1400 photos most measuring less than an inch square with roughly 175 in larger formats up to 3 ½ by 5 inches. Very Good. A wonderful labor of photographic love created by an unidentified young woman with ties to the Cabot family of Beacon Hill. The album composed largely of tiny contact prints glued in neat grids. Off-kilter compositions - a portion of a steeple against the sky the tail of a dog etc. - are mixed in with more traditional landscapes leading one to question whether the photographer had modernist aspirations or just took a lot of pictures.<br /> <br /> The photographer is unknown but our best guess is that it was someone who was a friend of Ellen Cabot of Beacon Hill perhaps while both were students or just after. Ellen Cabot the most frequent subject of the album is shown in a variety of settings often accompanied by her dog Prowler. Aerial photography the New England coastline camping life in Cambridge and equestrian competition are all on display. Other highlights include a dog named Benito Mussolini and artful shots of a monk’s torso. A portion of the photos perhaps five or ten percent are not present though the album is otherwise in excellent condition. Handwritten label on the front reads “Newport Races to Topsfield autumn 1930â€. Overall the album is a testament to the energy and spontaneity of youth and the possibilities of the photographic form as well as an intimate look into Boston’s storied upper class. unknown

Signed by Genthe on the mount inscribed by Marlowe as Marlowe Sothern on the mount as follows: “To Jean: our little comrade on our walks in Beautiful Stockbridge. In remembrance also of 'Sun Yat Sen' and Choo-Chio Chow. September. 1940. Julia Marlowe Sothern. Very Good. An uncommon image of the actress feminist and suffrage advocate Julia Marlowe who adopted the name - though never legally - Julia Marlowe Sothern after working with the Shakespearean actor E.H. Sothern. Ill health led Marlowe to retire from the stage in 1924 and she was seldom seen in public. This photograph inscribed later in her life is an uncommon relic from her reclusive later years. We can find no record of a Jean or the names mentioned. <br /> <br /> Arnold Genthe who famously photographed the San Francisco Earthquake of 1906 from the site of his destroyed studio moved to New York in 1911 where he became a portrait photographer. He most likely took this picture in his stint on the east coast. We find no other record of this specific portrait of Marlowe. Some silvering at margins otherwise excellent with some light normal tanning to mount. Arnold Genthe unknown

A group of four press photographs released by Pittsburgh-based Westinghouse Research Laboratories in the 1940s and '50s showing women at work including a photograph of the first woman to join the staff of atomic scientists.<br /> <br /> Each of the images are 8" x 10" printed in black and white with printed paper captions on the verso along with ink stamps and a few pencil markings.<br /> Frances Pecjak 1925-2013 is shown studying "the target end of the 4 million volt 'atom-smasher'" according to a cutline pasted on the verso of the photograph titled "Atom and 'Eve'". She was 23 at the time and held a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Duquense University. "While other young women may ponder the problem of needle and thread Frances' calculates such things as the energy released when tiny metallic targets in the Westinghouse atom-smasher are bombarded by atomic particles."<br /> <br /> The earliest photograph dated September 6 1945 shows a woman recording the performance of headlamps for vehicles; the final two are both dated January 11 1953 and show unidentified women working on scientific testing.<br /> <br /> Westinghouse has a long history of employing women. Notably the first female engineer Bertha Lamme took a job at Westinghouse in 1893. The iconic "We Can Do It!" poster from World War II was produced by J. Howard Miller in 1943 for Westinghouse Electric as an inspirational image to boost female worker morale. unknown

Having struggled to find work in New York City 25-year-old Gloria Steinem moved to Cambridge in 1959 to assume the position of co-director of the anti-Communist program the Independent Service for Information on the Vienna Youth Festival. The Service masquerading as a private enterprise whose aim was to send democracy- and capitalism-loving American youth to the communist-run Festival was funded by an anonymous donor later revealed to be the CIA though Steinem would have been aware of this from the start. The present pamphlet was issued a month before the Festival began and provides a detailed critique of the quality of Soviet literature: "The trouble with Soviet literature as Ilya Ehrenburg sees it is that Soviet writers say things they do not believe" p. 5. Covering every stage of a woman's life from infancy to death it was one of the first serious clinical efforts to describe and understand the vastly different socio-psychological development of women in a field that was mostly centred around trimming it to fit within the study of men. <br /> Dr. Deutsch was especially concerned with the dual nature of the female psyche the constant battle between individuality autonomy and what she referred to as being "A Servant of The Species." Deutsch was a student of Freud before becoming moving to the US and devoting herself to this study rightfully considered as groundbreaking in the psychological community. Mr. Towers speak forcefully for the contribution of women as musicians and composers in his article in "The Musician" of April May and June 1897. Following the article is an alphabetical list of women musicians. He also apologizes to the "hundreds of Women who have done and are still doing excellent work in the field of music all the world over whose names are absent from the following list." This pamphlet memorializes the article and is dedicated to Florence Sutro a gifted musician artist and lawyer in New York City Society. She created the National Federation of Women's Music Clubs and was president of the Woman's department of the Music Teachers National Association. She and her husband Theodore were advocates for women's suffrage. <br /> <br /> Sml. 8vo 30pp printed photo of Florence Sutro. Publishers printed blue paper wrappers title in blue on cover and advertisement for the Estey Piano Rooms on verso. Tipped in at the rear is a one page testimonial of Estey Piano Co by Mrs Sutro. Cartas Sobre la Educacion del Bello Sexo por una Señora Americana
Veracruz; Puebla 1870. Very good. 4202pp. Original printed boards with brown cloth spine. Edges rubbed minor soiling. Bookplate on front pastedown; ink stamp and pencil ownership inscription on title page. Internally clean. Originally published in 1824 by Ackermann in London this was one of several texts produced for export to the Spanish-speaking American market. Meant for the education of the fairer sex this work was more specifically targeted at the young women of Buenos Aires. Written under the fiction of a female "author" the book compares the education of women in America with that in Europe. The author criticizes the French model centered on the art of pleasing and favors the English one based on moral instruction. The work contains twelve letters addressing different aspects of women's education: moral intellectual domestic physical and religious within a traditional framework that emphasizes domesticity household care and obedience. There were several subsequent editions including Mexico in 1851 Havana in 1863 and the present edition. All are quite scarce. We locate this edition in a single copy at Syracuse University. unknown

Portland Me: Geo. Stinson & Co 1870. Very good. Carte-de-visite 3.75 x 2.5 inches. Minor soiling and foxing. A lovely and early image of Tennie C. Claflin -- suffragist Spiritualist and Wall Street Broker. Along with her notorious sister Victoria Woodhull Claflin opened a Wall Street brokerage firm in 1870 likely issuing this image as part of the promotion of the endeavor. Other copies or version we have found include the caption "Tennie C. Claflin Broker." Claflin also owned and edited a weekly newspaper with her sister starting in 1870 Woodhull and Claflin's Weekly a publication that advocated Free Love and other radical ideas. The pair famously tried to vote unsuccessfully in 1871. Their brokerage firm collapsed in the Panic of 1873 and they later moved to London following a bout of scandal involving Henry Ward Beecher. Manuscript Request Denial and Report for a Divorce in Mexican Texas at the Beginning of the 19th Century
Monclova: May 12 1800. Good plus. 4pp. on a bifolium. Light edge wear and staining. Some moderate offsetting. In a neat legible hand. A very interesting manuscript record of a colonial Mexican marriage dispute in 1800 which includes a request for separation by MarÃa Josefa Pruneda from her husband a report on her “illicit friendship†with another man and an official warning concerning her behavior from the judiciary. The manuscript copies MarÃa Josefa Pruneda’s petition to the governor of Coahuila y Tejas to separate from her husband Miguel Maldonado claiming he neglected her. The document begins “Con respecto al informe que el señor gobernador me pide en remitir en presentacion que hiso ante su señoria Maria Teresa Pruneda alegando que su marido ademas el no haverla assistido desde que se caso con ella se ha mudado aun Rancho Yermo Nombrado Sn. Andres distante de mariado de poblado donde esta mui espuesta al Riergo de los Enemigos.†<br /> <br /> However in the following reportThe intendant of Santa Rosa states that MarÃa Josefa refused to live with her husband due to her father’s influence and because of her “illicit friendship†with a young man named Thomas Zaralsa. The report notes that Miguel Maldonado was a hardworking man while the petitioner enjoyed her husband’s absences. The governor Manuel Antonio Cordero y Bustamante ordered the Justice of the Villa de Monclova to ensure she cohabited with her husband and warned her father to cease influencing her. A final report states that MarÃa Josefa was warned but disobeyed and left the town saying "No cumplio pues se fue sin presentarse a el tiempo de su salida loge. partisipo a Vm. porque en su inteligensia lede el debido cumplimiento segun sed ordena."<br /> <br /> A fascinating delineation of the process for seeking divorce and the difficulties of doing so in late colonial Mexico. First published in 1940 and re-copyrighted every subsequent year the DuBarry Success Course was originated by the Richard Hudnut Salon in New York City. It was originally designed to assist debutantes with their coming out -- and as a means to sell DuBarry cosmetics. The course focused heavily on low-calorie dieting purgatives light calisthenics and correct hair and makeup application. In addition to the six week course included here is a quick index to the course materials a "charm test" and a color-scope chart together with tissue papers to help you determine your best colors and what makeup to wear with what dress. The editor Helen Fraser also published a work on fashion modeling. We locate several iterations though the present set most closely resembles an exemplar held by the University of Rochester. unknown
