The Exhibition Erol Akyavas - Retrospective, organized by Istanbul Modern presents a comprehensive inventory of the artist's oeuvre that extends over half a century from the 1950s to the late 1990s. The exhibition brings together in great diversity the unique synthesis Akyavas developed between the artistic and cultural worlds of the East and the West, his perspectival and architectural arrangements on the canvas that passed through many transformations in time, his subconscious explorations that focused on the human figure and his interaction in his late period with the various cultures of the world. This selection of around 290 works, underlines the creative and pioneering identity Akyavas assumed between modern and contemporary art. The works of Erol Akyavas, who was born in Turkey, studied architecture and art in Europe and America and placed his interest in Eastern arts, and particularly Islamic art, and the Sufi tradition at the centre of his art, form one of the most accomplished examples of non-Western quests for Modernity that gained increasing prominence after World War II. Akyavas's world of images, assembled both from Eastern and Western art with a unique interpretation is considered an original synthesis. His quest for form and content that has a scope that extends from Cubism to Surrealism, from Islamic miniatures to prehistoric wall paintings and from calligraphy-based practices to the symbolism of monotheistic religions, develops an exceptional artistic language. In these paintings where perspective in the classical sense disappears, each image that is included in the painting is also ascribed a question, and the image is constructed through a Sufi sense of love, Akyavas creates a world which he embraces with faith.‎

She is one of the pioneering artists of Turkish modernism in the 1940's and of the post-war France avant-garde. Daughter of Kabaagaçli Sakir Pasha, niece of Grand Vizier Cevat Pasha, and sister of painter Aliye Berger and writer Cevat Sakir Kabaagaçli, a.k.a Halikarnas Balikçisi, Fahrünissa Zeid took her surname from Emir Zeid, the brother of Iraqi King Faysal I; she changed the spelling of her name to Fahrelnissa in France. She is the first woman artist exhibited at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, London. She joined the "d Grup" in 1942 in Istanbul, a time she already started to create her unique, extraordinary path. She focused on abstract painting; she became celebrated for her monumental and dynamic abstract compositions that engulf the viewer in fields of color, light, and energetic movement, intertwining cosmic and inner universes. Later in her life, she painted portraits of her family and friends. In 1975 she moved to Amman and founded Fahrelnissa Zeid Institute of Fine Arts in that city.‎

The exhibition Félix Ziem: Wanderer on the Sea of Light focuses on the French artist Félix Ziem, one of the most original landscape painters of the nineteenth century, and his paintings that mostly depict Istanbul and Venice where the sea and the city intermingle. In the paintings of Félix Ziem who is regarded as a pre-impressionist painter, it is possible to observe an endeavor to capture the vibrating effects of the ever-changing light by means of lively colors and fast, dynamic brush stroke techniques. While the articles written by the exhibition curators Lucienne Del'Furia and Frédéric Hitzel concentrate on Ziem's life and art, the article by R. Bar¿¿ K¿br¿s, the curator of the Suna and ¿nan K¿raç Foundation, Orientalist Painting Collection, offers a view on the artistic milieu of the period.‎

‎Sans lieu, sans éditeur (oeuvre originale manuscrite), sans date [circa 1923-1930]. 48x31,5cm (in-folio). Feuille de papier à dessin. Crayon et fusain sur papier. Oeuvre originale, réalisée à la main par Fernand Fernel, non signée. Toutefois, son authenticité ne fait aucun doute car, non seulement elle a été vendue avec d'autres dessins dont 2 signés mais, surtout, il s'agit en fait de dessins préparatoires réalisés par Fernel en immersion dans le monde du cirque lors des Galas de l'Union des Artistes entre 1923 et 1930. Ils ont ensuite été repris, pour certains, et édités en 1931 dans "L'Union des Artistes au cirque 1923-1930. 60 croquis de Fernel", rare ouvrage in-folio oblong (comme nos dessins) et magnifique témoignage sur le monde du cirque des années 1920. Le 20 janvier 2016, Arcurial a organisé, à Monaco, une vente "Hommage au Cirque : Les Fratellini" où plusieurs oeuvres similaires (même période, même sujets, même techniques, même artiste) ont été vendues. Les 15 dessins de Fernel (dont 4 "attribués à" car non signés) ont été estimés entre 500 et 1500€ et les adjudications sont montées jusqu'à 1820€ au marteau. Bibliographie où plusieurs dessins similaires de Fernel ont été reproduits : Michel Serrault, Pierre Robert Levy, Trois clowns légendaires. Les Fratellini, Éditions Actes Sud, Arles, 1997.‎

‎Très bel état de conservation pour cette pièce unique. Fernand Fernel dit Fernel (Bruxelles, 1872 - Paris, 1934) est un artiste peintre, illustrateur et affichiste belge. Avec E. Charle Lucas, Armand Rassenfosse et Privat Livemont, il est l'un des pionniers de l'affiche artistique belge. En plus d'être un peintre accompli, il fut aussi un illustrateur humoriste populaire, produisant de nombreuses cartes postales (dont la collection des cent) et des albums à colorier. Ses thèmes de prédilection sont : l'automobile, l'aviation, les sports et le milieu du cirque ; il semble avoir été très proche de la famille Fratellini. Il travailla avec les principales imprimeries lithographes parisiennes comme Devambez, Chaix, Vercasson, Cerf et Lemercier. Il possédait un atelier à Rueil-Malmaison. Le Gala de l'Union des Artistes est un spectacle de cirque à but caritatif créé en France en 1923 par Max Dearly. Organisé chaque année par l'Union des artistes, malgré de fréquentes éclipses, il a pour but d'aider les artistes dans le besoin.
