NOTE: With two autograph ownerships of: Joseph Bloomfield (1753-1823), New Jersey lawyer, Revolutionary War soldier, judge, and political leader. He and his wife supported a variety of social causes, with Joseph serving as president of the first Society for the Abolition of Slavery, organized in Burlington, NJ in 1783. In 1789, he donated a small plot of land to house the Library Company of Burlington. Bloomfield served as Mayor of Burlington from 1795 to 1800, and he went on to serve as Governor of New Jersey from 1801 to 1802 and 1803 to 1812, then returned to military service as a Brigadier General in the War of 1812. After the war, he finished his political career as a U.S. Congressional Representative from 1817 to 1821. Biography of the undisputed King of Bath, which Newbery commissioned to one of his favorite writers, Oliver Goldsmith (though he goes unmentioned in this first edition). Richard Nash (1674-1762), English dandy, better known as "Beau Nash," was born at Swansea. He was descended from an old family of good position, but his father from straitened means had become partner in a glass business. Young Nash was educated at Carmarthen Grammar school and at Jesus College, Oxford. He obtained a commission in the army, which, however, he soon exchanged for the study of law at the Temple. Here among "wits and men of pleasure" he came to be accepted as an authority in regard to dress, manners and style. When the members of the Inns of Court entertained William III after his accession, Nash was chosen to conduct the pageant at the Middle Temple. This duty he performed so much to the satisfaction of the king that he was offered knighthood, but he declined the honor, unless accompanied by a pension. As the king did not take the hint, Nash found it necessary to turn gamester. The pursuit of his calling led him in 1705 to Bath, where he had the good fortune almost immediately to succeed Captain Webster as master of the ceremonies. His qualifications for such a position were unique, and under his authority reforms were introduced which rapidly secured to Bath a leading position as a fashionable watering-place. He drew up a new code of rules for the regulation of balls and assemblies, abolished the habit of wearing swords in places of public amusement and brought duelling into disrepute, induced gentlemen to adopt shoes and stockings in parades and assemblies instead of boots, reduced refractory chairmen to submission and civility, and introduced a tariff for lodgings. Through his exertions a handsome assembly-room was also erected, and the streets and public buildings were greatly improved. Nash adopted an outward state corresponding to his nominal dignity. He wore an immense white hat as a sign of office, and a dress adorned with rich embroidery, and drove in a chariot with six greys, laced lackeys and French horns. When the act of parliament against gambling was passed in 1745, he was deprived of an easy though uncertain means of subsistence, but the corporation afterwards granted him a pension of six score guineas a year, which, with the sale of his snuff-boxes and other trinkets, enabled him to support a certain faded splendour till his death. He was honored with a public funeral at the expense of the town. Notwithstanding his vanity and impertinence, the tact, energy and superficial cleverness of Nash won him the patronage and notice of the great. He was a man of strong personality, and considerably more able than Beau Brummell, whose prototype he was. First edition with all of the correct points. Rothschild 1022; Tinker 1093. In 8° (cm 11,4 x 19,1), bella legatura mezza pelle con angoli, pp 204, esemplare in buone condizioni, firma cancellata a penna al front. Violento libello scritto in prosa rimata e cadenzata, satira politica che identifica la Gran Bretagna come colpevole di aver iniziato la Guerra d'Indipendenza americana; molti riferimenti all'America, due discorsi presunti di Benjamin Franklin, feroci calunnie contro Maria Antonietta, processo burlesco ai tre sovrani, condotto e assistito da una folla di altri personaggi del tempo, delle Nazioni interessate. Nell'opera l'A. è indicato come "Sir Jamé"; attribuito da Barbier a "Bouffonidor" (Dictionnaire, III, p. 1050), e a torto a Linguet da Peignot e Ersch, "... on ne trouve aucun détail sur Bouffonidor; n'est-ce pas un pseudonyme? D'après une note insérée au "Bulletin du bouquiniste", 1 octobre 1858, p 181, l'ouvrage serait du chevalier Ange Goudar" (1720-1791), definito dal De Feller "écrivain mercénaire, versatile et plagiaire", avventuriero cacciato da vari Paesi. Per l'attribuzione a J. H. Marchand, altro A. sovversivo, si veda Georges Andrieux, "Importants livres et manuscrits relatifs aux Amériques... Vente à Paris... 1934", dove la copia citata contiene un verso ms che dà il suo nome sotto forma di acrostico, seguito dalle parole: "Cherche icy mon nom, cher et zélé lecteur... Et tu trouveras de ce livre le véritable auteur". (Echeverria & Wilkie, French Image, 780/58, 780/59). Nel "Catalogue de la Bibliothèque Nationale", entrò come "Bouffonidor". Fu attribuito a Goudar per somiglianze con altre opere di questi. Tali attribuzioni non sono ora più accreditate. Il luogo di stampa è naturalmente fittizio: COPAC dichiara "Printed on the Continent". Non esiste, inoltre, nessuna edizione originale inglese. L'opera fu presto censurata, e reimpressa in edizioni contraffatte. Esiste altra impressione, dell'anno precedente con antiporta.. Esemplari in COPAC. De Feller Tomo V, pp 527-528.

(Wraps of map-volume bit rubbed, creased along extremities.) Excellent set. ~ First and only edition. Very rare. The large Atlas Volume was published as an annex to the Memorandum, and titled: "Annexe au Mémorandum du Gouvernement de la République Fédérative Populaire de Yougoslavie sur le problème économique de Trieste." Trieste (Trst), seaport in Northeast Italy, on an inlet (Gulf of Trieste) of the Adriatic. Part of Austria since 1382, it was annexed by Italy in 1918. In September 1943 the German army has occupied the city. It was liberated by Partisans in 1945 and went under Allied military occupation until 1947. Under the terms of the 1947 Peace Treaty with Italy, a Governor for the Free Territory of Trieste was to be selected and appointed by the United Nations Security Council. Until such appointment was made, the United States, Great Britain, and Yugoslavia were to administer and protect that Territory. In 1954 it was divided between Italy and Yugoslavia. Legatura recente in mezza pergamena con piccole punte, dorso liscio con titoli in oro su tassello. Esemplare fresco ed a carte candide, in eccellente statro di conservazione. Le tre tavole raffigurano: scultura in marmo della Madonna del campanile di S. Domenico, S. Giorgio a cavallo e le misure in bronzo utilizzate in antico a Chioggia. Cfr. In Modena, per gli Eredi Bartolomeo Soliani, 1759. In folio (cm. 29,8); bella legatura coeva in pergamena rigida, elegante antiporta incisa con lo stemma estense; pp. XV, (1), 362 + una carta bianca. La nascita dell'Ospedale Estense di Modena risale alla politica di riforma dell'assistenza perseguita dal duca Francesco III, sulla base dei doveri di un “buon principe” indicati da Ludovico Antonio Muratori, che nel febbraio del 1721 aveva istituito l'Opera della Carità, finalizzata all'aiuto, anche a domicilio, dei più bisognosi. Nel 1753 fu varato il piano per la costruzione di un Grande Ospedale degli Infermi, che doveva sostituire quello ormai fatiscente dell'Unione, con l'intento di destinarlo a ricovero degli invalidi e dei mendicanti. L'edificio occupò l'area del monastero e della chiesa di San Gerolamo e di alcune case di privati, adiacenti all'Ospedale della Santa Unione. I lavori cominciarono nell'aprile 1753; il 30 novembre 1758 venne inaugurato il nuovo edificio, portato a termine nel 1762 in seguito agli ampliamenti imposti dal grande afflusso dei ricoverati. Alle spese, che ammontarono ad oltre 1.000.000 di lire, contribuirono il Duca, la Comunità di Modena, 34 Comunità del distretto, le Arti, le Confraternite, la Congregazione dell'Abbondanza, la carità privata e gli introiti derivanti dalle prime soppressioni. Anche papa Benedetto XIV diede il suo contributo, detraendo dal reddito del vescovado modenese, allora vacante, la somma di lire 17.172 di Modena. Axs

Il volume primo riguarda l'Europa; il secondo Asia, Africa e America. Interessante e non comune.

The books are housed in a tan kraft cardboard slipcase with folding lip and a printed title label on the spine. The covers are very slightly creased and rubbed. The slipcase is rubbed with some slight wear to the edges. Includes 8 text volumes and a book illustrated with 14 full-page and folding maps and plans some of which are in color. Very good. <p>The text of this work on Greenland's economy politics and administration is in Danish.<p>The sub-titles of the works include: "Indledning / Placering og udformning af bebyggelser / den fremtidige anlaegsvirksomhed" "Angamagssalik scoresbysund og thule" "Erhvervsmaessige of okonomiske forhold" "Sundhedsvaesenet boligbyggeriet og sociale forhold" "Skolevaesenet kirken og andre kulturelle forhold" and "Politiske og administrative forhold retsplejen". In older probably original brown woodgrain drop-back box backed with black buckram. With 26 black & white photographic reproductions of works by Cézanne Picasso Derain Braque Metzinger Laurencin Gleizes Léger Duchamp Picabia and original owner Juan Gris printed on glossy white paper. WITH A HALF TITLE INSCRIPTION in French OF GREAT IMPORTANCE FROM ONE OF THE CO-AUTHORS translated as: "To the painter Juan Gris with all my best wishes Metzinger." Occasional underlinings in blue pencil. Text leaves with overall light browning and occasional foxing due to paper stock lower corner of half title restored and fore edge with minor chipping otherwise a fine copy the plates clean and bright and the binding unworn.<br/> <br/> Penned by two Cubist artists this is a highly resonant association copy of the first major treatise on the Cubism movement presented to noted Cubist painter Juan Gris and later put into an illusionistic binding composed of variably colored cubes that seem to jump off the surface. Albert Gleizes 1881-1953 and Jean Metzinger 1883-1956 had painted in both Post-Impressionist and Fauvist styles before their interest in exploring form and structure as well as light and color led them to the style that would become Cubism. Influenced by Cézanne's "brick-by-brick" technique and Poincaré's writings on space and time the new movement sought to examine objects from a mobile perspective and to depict multiple views of a subject in one painting. In "On Cubism" they explain: "An object has not one absolute form; it has many. It has as many as there are planes in the region of perception." The work features black & white illustrations of Cubist paintings by the authors and by fellow pioneers Picasso Braque Derain and Juan Gris to whom this copy was presented by Metzinger. Born in Madrid as José Victoriano González-Pérez 1887-1927 Gris studied engineering before moving to Paris to pursue art. First working as an illustrator for periodicals he was inspired by Metzinger to begin painting seriously. His training in engineering helped him appreciate the importance of mathematics in painting a realization triggered according to art historian John Richardson by Metzinger's painting "Le Goûter Tea Time" exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in 1911. Our volume was later in the collection of and probably bound for Chilean architect and collector Carlos Alberto Cruz 1939-2022. We have been unable to find more information on our binder "A. Contreras" but it seems possible that he was also Chilean as the Valparaiso-based Cruz owned a number of bindings signed with that name. Eugène Figuière et Cie unknown
