‎Second edition of volume one, and first edition of volume two. In the 15 century chronicle ""Vetus Chronicon Holsatiae"", first printed here by Leibnitz, states, that the Danes were of the Tribe of Dan, while the Jutes the Jews. This is the first announcement of the theory later called Nordic Israelism or Norse Israelism. ""It is the belief that Scandinavian peoples, or the Nordic countries (Denmark, Faroe Islands, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden) descend from the Ten Lost Tribes of Israel. Although there is evidence of such a belief from literature during the Early Modern Period, Nordic Israelism as a movement and ideology only emerged in the latter half of the 19th century among several early proponents of British Israelism.""(Wikipedia).Ravier: 49 (tome I), 44 (Tome II, but Ravier is not clear on this point)‎

- Bibl. Danica III:13 - Birkelund nr. 38 - Thesaurus 544.‎

‎Macrobius was one of the leading popularizers of science in the Latin West, and his conception of the world geography as an equatorial and meridional ocean (depicted in the book) dividing the earth into four quarters, dominated scientific thinking on world geography in the Middle Ages. - His ""Saturnalia"" deals with Roman feasts in form of table-talk at a banquet in Rome, giving information of food and drink and their preparation.and is fascinatingly rich in philological, historical, antiquarian and scientific lore, throwing a clear light on the interests and taste of the period.‎

‎Fourth Lyon-edition of Macrobius's 2 main works. In the ""Somnium"" he uses passages of Cicero's work as mere suggestions to construct a treatise on Neoplatonic philosophy - the most satisfactory and widely read Latin compendium on Neoplatonism that existed during the Middle Ages. Macrobius was one of the leading popularizers of science in the Latin West, and his conception of the world geography as an equatorial and meridional ocean (depicted in the book) dividing the earth into four quarters, dominated scientific thinking on world geography in the Middle Ages. - His ""Saturnalia"" deals with Roman feasts in form of table-talk at a banquet in Rome, giving information of food and drink and their preparation (Vicaire 986 (ed.1492, Simon p. 547 (ed. 1492)). and is fascinatingly rich in philological, historical, antiquarian and scientific lore, throwing a clear light on the interests and taste of the period. - Adams vol. ‎First edition, first issue. ""This famous history was written in Venice in 1540, where the author was then living as a catholic refugee - he had left Sweden in 1526. In it, the Gothic romantic conception of Sweden as the ""vagina gentium"", the idea of Jordanes, 6th century chronicler of the Goths, is developed in a history of Swedish kings both at home and abroad leading the migrating peoples. The conception had alredy been adopted by mediaeval Swedish historians and was the leading ideology of Swedish patriotism in the 17th century when the text was translated into Swedish (1620). The book was posthumously published by the author's brother Olaus Magnus, who dedicated it to Pope Julius III as well as to the Swedish Crown Prince Erik."" ‎First edition of Magnus' great work, which constitutes the first larger geographical-ethnographical description of Scandinavia and one of the most important sources on the customs of the Northern peoples and daily life in the 16th century.""Olaus Magnus (1490-1557) was the last Catholic archbishop of Sweden, which he left in 1524. This book is still one of the most importent sources on Northern customs and daily life of the time. The artist of the wood-cuts is unknown but most of them are made after drawings by the author. 13 editions were published in 16th century and several in the following, comprising translations into Dutch, French, German, Italian and lastly into Swedish. The history was intended to expand the information in the large map, ""Carta marina"", which Olaus Magnus published in venice in 1539, and of which only one copy was known, until a second was discovered in 1962 and acquired by the University Library of Upsala."" (Swedish Books 1280-1967, no.18).Collijn 2, pp. 221-7. - Sabin, 43830.In reality, this famous work is a large commentary with notes to Olaus Magnus' famous map, the ""Carta Marina"", which he published in Venice in 1539, of which only two copies are known. The Carta Marina (""Map of the Sea"" or ""Sea Map""), is the earliest map of the Nordic countries that gives details and place names. Only two earlier maps of Scandinavia are known, those of Jacob Ziegler and Claudius Clavus. The ""Carta Marina"" is reproduced here in smaller size. The woodcut illustrations and views are of the greatest importance to the cultural history of the Nordic countries, as they illustrate the religions, folklore, occupations, as well as the geographies, fauna etc. of the Scandinavian people. They have since been reproduced a number of times. The artist is not known, but they are probably carved after sketches by Olaus Magnus himself. ‎Renaissance. Histoire de France au seizième siècle. - [INVENTING THE ""RENAISSANCE""]‎

‎Paris, 1855. 8vo. Very nice contemporary diced half calf with gilt spine. Cracks to upper and lower hinges, and inner front hinge weak, but overall a very nice copy. A bit of brwning and soiling to first and last leaves and dampstaining to inner margin of first ab. 20 leaves. (10), CLX, 334 pp‎

‎First edition of this seminal work - the third in Michelet's series of ""The History of France"" - in which he coins the term ""Renaissance"" and uses it for the period of the sixteenth century as an historical period in its own right. The humanists of the period that we now call the Renaissance had a strong sense of being and doing something that was very different from that of the centuries before them"" they clearly thought of themselves as living in and creating a new epoch, re-inventing and re-using the classical Greek and Roman values. Once again they gave birth to the humanistic arts, literature, philosophy, painting, sculpting, etc. It is not a new invention of later times to view this historical epoch as something new and still something different, something worthy of the term ""Re-birth"", acknowledging both the source from which inspiration was drawn as well as the achievements of the new era. Thus, Michelet is not the first to understand what went on in this period, but still he changed our concept of it for ever - he invented the term which has not only determined this perioed ever since, but which has also been used to explain and understand all that went on in this most crucial period for modern man. It is in the present work by Michelet that he uses for the first time the noun ""Renaissance"" for this epoch and lets it refer to the discovery of world and of man in the 16th century. He not only lets the term refer to the artistic or scholarly part of the period, he lets it refer to the entire complex of changes that were taking place in this period, and he thus gives birth to the period as that of the mind and spirit of man, instead of just that of painting and learning. Michelet's work appeared at a time that allowed for it to exercise the greatest of influence. From the end of the 16th century until the middle of the 18th century, the history of the Renaissance was a field that barely existed. Only with Voltaire was some focus put on this period that we ever since Michelet have called the ""Renaissance"". Only with Michelet are we given the vocabulary to sum up this period and to describe it properly and in detail. When he publishes his work in 1855, historians and thinkers are ready to view this period as something in itself and as something worth noticing. That which Michelet thus began is that which Burchardt takes up in his ""Cultur der Renaissance in Italien"" (1860), in which ""Renaissance"" is finally characterized as the birth of modern humanity. Both Michelet and Burckhardt believed that modern, secular man is a product of the ""Renaissance"".""The terms ""restauratio"" or ""resttitutio"" had been applied by fourteenth-century Italian humanists to the revival of ancient languages and literatures, that of ""rinascita"" by Ghiberti and Vasari to the new blossoming art and architecture. In the eighteenth century Voltaire and Gibbon first saw the Italian civilization of the fourteenth to sixteenth centuries as an entity and as a determining factor in the whole course of European history. Michelet (324) in 1855 first used the term ""renaissance"" for this period as an historical epoch in its own right. Burckhardt, an admirer of both Voltaire and Gibbon, supplied the final synthesis."" ‎First edition of this large and extensive bio-bibliography of European authors from the Renaissance to the 18th century. The earliest author is John Dee (d. 1607) and the latest being Guillaume Delisle (d. 1720). Jean-Pierre Nicéron was “A French lexicographer, born in Paris, 11 March, 1685, died there, 8 July, 1738. After his studies at the Collège Mazarin, he joined the Barnabites (August, 1702). He taught rhetoric in the college of Loches, and soon after at Montargis, where he remained ten years. While engaged in teaching, he made a thorough study of modern languages. In 1716 he went to Paris and devoted his time to literary work. His aim was to put together, in a logically arranged compendium, a series of biographical and bibliographical articles on the men who had distinguished themselves in literature and sciences since the time of the Renaissance. It required long research as well as great industry. After eleven years he published the first volume of his monumental work under the title of ""Mémoires pour servir à l'histoire des hommes illustres de la république des lettres avec le catalogue raisonné de leurs ouvrages"" (Paris, 1727). Thirty-eight volumes followed from 1728 to 1738. The last volume from his pen was published two years after the author's death (Paris, 1740).”(Catholic Encyclopedi) “It has been often repeated that this work lacks method, ana that the length of many articles is out of proportion to the value of the men to whom they are devoted. This criticism, however true it may be, does not impair the genuine qualities and importance of the whole work. Even now, these ""Mémoires"" contain a great amount of information that could hardly be obtained elsewhere. Moreover, they refer to sources which, but for our author, would be easily overlooked or ignored.” (Ibid) A German translation was published in 1747-1777 Brunet IV, 55.‎

‎Mathematicae Collectione. A Federico Commandino Urbinatae In Latinum Conversae, & Commentarijs Illustratae. - [THE CULMINATION OF GREEK MATHEMATICS]‎

‎Colophon: Pisauri (Pesaro), Hieronymum Concordiam, 1588. (Having the reprinted title-page: Venetiis, Franciscum de Franciscis Senemsem, 1589). Folio. Contemporary limp vellum. Repairs to upper part of spine and small nicks to back repaired. Edges of covers with tiny loss of vellum. Covers slightly soiled. Calligraphed title on back. Title-page with and old, partly erased stamp. Woodcut printer's device on title-page. Ff (3), 334 (332) (= 664 pp). Numerous woodcut diagrams and illustrations in the text. Printed on good paper. Ff. 2-3 with an old repair to inner margin (no loss). F2 browned, but otherwise remarkably clean with only a few brownspots. A few small worm-tracts to some margins. In spite of its flaws, a very good copy of this monumental work.‎

‎First edition, title-issue (with the fresh title-page stating 1589, but with nothing else reprinted and otherwise through and through the 1588-printing), of Commandino's seminal Latin translation of the work that constitutes the culmination of Greek Mathematics. This printing, which contains the complete extant text of Pappos in Latin translation is responsible for reviving ancient mathematics in the Renaissance and shaping much modern mathematics, profoundly influencing the likes of Descartes and Newton. ""Pappos was the greatest mathematician of the final period of ancient science, and no one emulated him in Byzantine times. He was the last mathematical giant of antiquity."" (George Sarton, Ancient Science and Modern Civilization. p.82). ""Pappus of Alexandria in ab. 320 composed a work with the title Collection (Synagoge) which is important for several reasons. In the first place it provides a most valuable historical record of parts of Greek Mathematics that otherwise would be unknown to us. For instance it is in Book V of the Collection that we learn of Archimedes' discovery of the thirteen semiregular polyhedra or ""Archimedian solids"". Then, too, the Collection includes alternative proofs and supplementary lemmas for propositions in Euclid, Archimedes, Appolonius and Ptolemy. Finally, the treatise includes new discoveries, and generalizations not found in any earlier work. The Collection, Pappus' most important treatise, contained eight Books, but the first Book and the first part of the second Book are now lost"" (Boyer, A History of Mathematics p. 205). ""Each book (8) is preceded by general reflexions which give to that group of problems its philosophical and historical setting. The prefaces are of deep interest to historians of mathematics and, therefore, it is a great pity that three of them are lost [...] Book VII is far the longest book of the Collection [...] [and here], we find in it the famous Pappo's problem: ""given several straight lines in a plane, to find the locus point, such that when straight lines are drawn from it to the given lines at a given angle, the products of certain of the segments shall be in a given ratio to the product of the remaining ones"". This problem is important in itself, but even so because it exercized Descartes' mind and caused him to invent the method of coordinates explained in his Geométrie (1637). Think of a seed lying asleep for more than thirteen centuries and then helping to produce that magnificent flowering, analytical geometry [...] The final Book VIII is mechanical and is largely derived from Heron of Alexandria. Following Heron, Pappos distinguished various parts of theoretical mechanics (geometry, arithmetic, astronomy and physics). The Book is considered the climax of Greek mechanics and helps us to realize the great variety of problems to which the Hellenistic mechanicians addressed themselves. If Book VIII is the climax of Greek mechanics, we may say as well that the whole collection is a treasury and to some extent the culmination of Greek mathematics. [...] The ideas collected or invented by Pappos did not stimulate Western mathematicians until very late, but when they finally did, they caused the birth of modern mathematics- analytical geometry, projective geometry, centrobaric method. That birth or rebirth from Pappos' ashes, occurred within four years (1637-40). This was modern geometry connected immediately with the ancient one as if nothing had happened between."" (Georg Sarton op.cit.). - It is from Pappus we have the famous words of Archimedes: ""Give me a place to stand, and I will move the earth"" (Se PMM No 72). - ""Without pretending to great originality, the whole work shows, on the part of the author, a thorough grasp of all the subjects treated, independent of judgement, mastery of technique" the style is terse and clear" in short, Pappus stands out as an accomplished and versatile mathematician, a worthy representative of the classical Greek geometry."" (Heath, A History of Greek mathematics Vol. II: p.358). Adams P 224 (The sheets of the Pisauris edition with a fresh title).‎
