‎The very rare first French edition of this important work on Danish demography and economy. The work is an augmented translation of the second half of ""Über das königliche Dänische Indigenatrecht und einige andere Gegenstände der Staatswissenschaft und Geschichte"" from 1779, by the same author. The work contains tables that show the current demographical situation in Denmark, Norway, Iceland, Schleswig, Holstein, Oldenburg, and Delmenhorst, as well as the economic situation and development of the Kingdom of Denmark, e.g. an aspect of the trade-relation between the Kingdom of Denmark and that of England from 1698 till 1754. The work is thus highly interesting in several regards. It is one of the earliest works to deal with the question of the right of citizenship in Denmark and an early account and analysis of the economic situation of the country. The work must also be one of the first to seriously treat the demographical aspect of Denmark, as the first census in Denmark took place in 1769, and the second in 1787, being the only conts of the entire population of the Kingdom of Denmark conducted before the 19th century.Gottlob Benedikt von Schirach (1743 - 1804) was the son of the theologist Christian Gottlob Schirach. G.B. Schirach was a German historian and Danish counsellor of legation. He published a number of books within the fields of history and economics, due to which he came to be regarded as one of the most important writers of his time. He founded the journal ""Politisches Journal..."" in 1781, which became one of the one of the first really important journals of Northern and Middle Germany. Biblotheca Danica I: 739‎

‎Scarce first edition. ‎Scarce offprint-issue of Stigler's law which claim that no scientific discovery is named after its original discoverer. Historical acclaim for discoveries is often ascribed to person who bring attention to an idea that is not yet widely known, whether or not that person was its original inventor. Theories may be named long after their discovery. In the case of eponymy, the idea becomes named after that person, even if that person is acknowledged by historians of science not to be the one who discovered it. Often, several people will arrive at a new idea around the same time, as in the case of calculus, Higgs boson, ect. Stigler named the sociologist Robert K. Merton as the discoverer of ""Stigler's law"", deliberately making ""Stigler's law"" exemplify itself.‎

(24), 830"" (2), 486, (128) pp. With the engraved device to the title-page of volume 1.‎

‎The magnificent editio princeps of Snorre's seminal ""Heimskringla"", his collection of the original sagas of the old Norse kings - beginning with the mythological prehistory going back to Odin and Asgard - printed for the first time in the original Icelandic, accompanied by translations into Swedish and Latin, also being the first translations into these languages. The ""Heimskringla"" constitutes one of the most famous and influential works of medieval Icelandic literature and a cornerstone of Norse mythology. These seminal sagas are of foundational importance not only to Norse mythology and Scandinavian history, however, but also to the medieval history of the Western world in general, famously narrating expeditions to many other European countries, most obviously England (e.g. the famous sacking of Southwark and the Battle of Hastings), but also many other parts of the world, ranging as far as Palestine (the saga of Sigurd the Crusader, where the Norwegian fleet is attacked by Arab Muslim pirates), Constantinople, Syria, and Sicily (the Saga of Harald Hadrada, which narrates his expedition to the East), etc. ""In addition to this, there are early accounts of the western voyages of Erik the Red and Leif the Lucky and the early settlements on ""Vinland"", as the Norsemen called the north-eastern coast of American continent"" and the equally daring eastern voyage of Sigurd the Crusader."" (PMM) ""Although the expeditions of the Norsemen to America were not mentioned in the manuscript copies of Sturluson's sagas, Peringskiöld introduces references to these expeditions in vol. I, pp. 325-348."" (Sabin) ""Snorri's contribution to the literature of Iceland is of inestimable importance. It was he who collected and preserved the great prose ""Edda"" (first published in 1665), which contains, with some tracts on composition and metre of considerable importance, the ""Gylfaginning"". Part mythology and part history, it is this which gives us the earliest version of the story of Aesir and their leader Odin, whose invasion of the North became the religion of Scandinavia. From this were spun the ""Niebelungenlied"" and ""Beowulf"""" ... Even more important than this is Snorri's own contribution, the great collections of the Sagas of the Norse Kings, called the ""Heims Kringla"", first published in full in 1697 in the original Icelandic, with translations into Latin and Swedish, edited by Johan Peringskiöld."" (PMM) A few extracts of the work had been translated into Danish during the 16th and 17th centuries, with a Danish translation appearing in 1633, but the original Icelandic text had not been printed before and appeared for the first time - under the title ""Heimskringla"", which is the first known use of the name - with this magnificent publication, which also contains the first edition of the Latin translation and the first edition of the Swedish translation. The work is sought-after and difficult to come by. Sabin 85484 (""The New York Public Library has a copy of vol. I, but lacks vol. 2. The collation of vol. 2 is supplied from the ""...Catalogue of the Icelandic Collection"" in the Cornell University Library"")Fiske 535PMM 168‎

‎Later edition, first published in 1673, of Temple’s exposition on the tumultuous events of 1672, often referred to in Dutch history as the Rampjaar (""Disaster Year""), the book examines the internal and external challenges facing the Dutch Republic. The year 1672 was marked by a coordinated attack on the Dutch Republic by France, England and the German areas of Münster and Cologne. It is regarded as being one of the most significant crises in Dutch history, a time when the Republic’s survival was under threat. Sir William Temple, 1st Baronet (1628 –1699) was an English diplomat, politician and writer. An important diplomat, he was recalled in 1679, and for a brief period was a leading advisor to Charles II of England, with whom he then fell out.‎

‎First edition thus. First part in Greek, second part in Latin. ""The Latin version is Valla's , which Stephan published separately in 1564, but which usually accompanies the Greek text."" (Dibdin II:506). ""The text was first printed by Aldus in 1502. The edition of Henri Estienne, a member of the famous French family of printers, who corresponded with scholars as an equal, first came out in 1564. The edition cited (the second edition, 1588) was improved by the addition of a translation into Latin by Lorenzo Valla..."" (PMM 102). ""Édition plus belle"" (Brunet, V:844). Stephanus (Estienne) worked in Paris and Dibdin mentions the work as being printed in Paris, whereas PMM states that it is printed in Genova. ‎Kbhvn., Melchior Martzan, (1651). 4to.
