Skillman's New-York Police Reports Illustrated with Engravings. Written in 1828-29
New York: Ludwig & Tolefree 1830. First Edition. Hardcover. Good. 8.5 x 5.25 inches 151 pp with engraved frontispiece and four additional illustrations. In original boards with what appears to be later but not recent cloth over the original cloth spine. Boards worn front board only just attached some losses to spine cloth; good. Early ownership signature Joshua Hodsdon Yarmouth on front free endpaper printed label on rear pastedown admonishing the reader to "Never wet your thumb or finger to turn over a leaf in this or any other book." Little is known about John Skillman but he evidently frequented the regular morning court hearings in Lower Manhattan for people who had been arrested the previous day for relatively minor crimes such as drunkenness lewd behavior vagrancy petty theft and prostitution. His reports on these crimes which were probably modeled on those that had recently begun appearing regularly in London newspapers take the form of brief pun-filled comic vignettes or dialogues between the accused and the magistrate. For example "James G----- was sent by his employer with 10 shillings to buy screws---bought 5 shillings worth and expended the rest of the money in his own way. Is put in poetical language under the screws" and "Mary Stevenson entertains the opinion that 'time is money;' and having no instrument or machine whereby she might keep proper 'note of time' thought proper to obtain one at all hazards. She is now in close confinement for a time." Beneath the humor however are characterizations of male and female defendants of different races classes ethnic backgrounds -- some flattering some not. Scholar Brian Baaki has argued that by placing "an overwhelming volley of black malefactors" at the beginning of the text Skillman "tries to manufacture an association between African-Americans and crime." There may be room for a more nuanced reading but without doubt the book is of interest in the broader context of the social and cultural history of early nineteenth century New York. Milan IL: Rail Splitter Press. Sixteen pamphlets in original wrappers averaging around 40 pp each some with illustrations; all in very good condition most quite scarce. William Lloyd Clark was a venomous anti-Catholic who founded the Rail Splitter Press to publish tracts handbills and postcards elaborating his views and those of like-minded individuals. He proudly claimed to stock "every book of value that is in print dealing with the Roman Catholic menace to our liberties and our free institutions." The pamphlets in this collection cover the standard anti-Catholic tropes lascivious and druken priests politicians in thrall to the Pope etc. and also focus on specific political concerns -- among them President Harding's "betrayal of the Protestant cause" by appointing Catholics to various positions within his administration and the election of 1928 in which Democrat Al Smith was the first Catholic major-party candidate for President of the United States Titles include: Crimes of Priests; Washington in the Grasp of Rome; The Menace of Al Smith; The Devil's Prayer Book or an Exposure of Auricular Confession as Practiced by the Roman Catholic Church An Eye-Opener for Husbands Fathers and Brothers; The Open Door to Hell; Roman Oaths and Papal Curses; A Kentucky Hell; An Open Letter to President Harding; The Horrible Fate of Victor Lamar; Peoria by Gaslight; One Hundred Reasons Why I Left the Roman Catholic Church; Words of Wisdom; The Sad Story of Mary Lilly; Snap Shots at the Pope; Pat's Grip on the Government; and Free Masonry The Open Door to Damnation A Catholic Statement. New Hampshire Suffragettes Campaign for John B. Jameson Pro-Suffrage Candidate for the U.S. Senate 1918
Concord NH 1918. Two items -- a handbill or small broadside 11.25" x 6" titled "What's Sauce for the Goose is Sauce for the Gander! Do in 1918 What You Were Urged to do in 1898. Stand by the Administration that is Waging the War!" and a circular 11.25" x 8.5" dated October 31 1918 -- both urging the reader to vote for John B. Jameson for Senate. Neither piece makes explicit mention of suffrage instead offering arguments based on Jameson's history and positions on other matters primarily relating to the war. But Jameson was known as a sincere supporter of women's suffrage and--as the circular notes-- Moses had been noncommittal saying "I decline to make any statement for or against any named measure prior to my election to the Senate." The handbill is signed in print by Mary I. Wood and Mrs. Winston Churchill Mabel Harlakenden Hall both prominent suffragists and the circular is signed by about 65 women from across the state. Both items have a little toning at the edges and some small chips and tears; overall very good. unknown books

Hatfield Edwin F.
Freedom's Lyre: Or Psalms Hymns and Sacred Songs for the Slave and His Friends
New York: S.W. Benedict 1840. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. 4.75 x 3 inches pp. vi 265 including index of first lines. Publisher's blind-stamped brown cloth with gilt spine lettering. Corners lightly bumped very slight scattered foxing nineteenth-century ink stamp of H.J. Jones and penciled signature of Samuel Jones on front free endpaper; very good or better. According to the Preface this collection was commissioned by the American Anti-Slavery Society for use by "those who have been accustomed to meet to pray for the Emancipation of the Slave." Hatfield a Presbyterian minister and student of hymns selected and liberally edited 291 hymns songs and poems--including three credited to John Greenlead Whittier--and organized them thematically into sections titled "The Cause of the Slave" "The Slave Comforted" "The Slave Exhorted to Patience and Hope" "The Rights of the Slave" "Appeals in Behalf of the Slave" subdivided into appeals to masters freemen women and Christian "Slaveholders Admonished" "The Friends of the Slave Encouraged" "The Friends of the Slave Assembled" and "Emancipation." As scholar Cheryl C. Boots argues Freedom's Lyre stands out from the hundreds of collections of hymns published in the nineteenth century because the performance of these hymns "helped connect their secular cause with a sacred one" and "functioned within the ranks of the abolitionists as a commonly held language of identity and protest that engaged singers' emotions as it affirmed the humanity of blacks" Singing for Equality the American Antislavery and Indian Rights Movements 1640-1855. TELEGRAPHY ANTITRUST
Eight Men and a Trust. Letters from Other Men who are Getting Relief from the Oppression of a Corporation
New York & Washington D.C.: Telepost Company 1910. 20 pp 6.5 x 8.25 inches folding to 3.25 x 8.25 inches in stapled wrappers printed in black and red illustrated with photographic portraits. A little soiling at the creases staining at the bottom edge of the front wrap; very good. One copy located in OCLC at Yale. A relic of the early telephony/telegraphy wars. By the turn of the 20th century Bell American Telephone & Telegraph was ascendant in the telephone sphere and "The Telegraph Combination" Western Union combined with the Atlantic and Pacific Telegraph Companies dominated the realm of telegraphy. Enter the small scrappy independent telephone companies trying to eke out a corner of the market for themselves. One of these was Telepost a company possessing superior technology allowing for far faster and far cheaper telegraphic transmissions. Based on the inventions of American electrical engineer Patrick B. Delany their automatic telegraph system was capable of transmitting and recording 3000 words a minute over a single wire. The company made a brave stand with an impressive marketing campaign in the pages of Popular Mechanics the Journal of Telephony and other journals both high-brow and low. This little pamphlet bravely sallies forth offering short biographies of its accomplished and highly respectable trustees providing glowing testimonials to the speed and economy of their services anointing Telepost "The People's Telegraph" and declaring "The Combination cannot get the Telepost Company." Alas despite its bravado Telepost could not beat the big boys and by the late 'teens Western Union had gobbled it up whole. Telepost Company unknown books

Joseph Ritson or Richardson
OBSERVATIONS ON THE THREE FIRST VOLUMES OF THE HISTORY OF ENGLISH POETRY. IN A FAMILIAR LETTER TO THE AUTHOR
London: J. Stockale; R. Faulder 1782. First Edition. Half Leather. Very Good binding. Ritson's first book in which he attacks Thomas Warton's History of English Poetry in such vitriolic tones -- Warton is a preternder a cheater and a liar -- as to cause quite a contretemps in late 18th century English literary circles. One assumes this actually pleased Ritson as he went on the next year to attack Samuel Johnson and George Steevens. Eventually Ritson went complete mad barricading himself in his rooms at Gray's Inn and setting fire to a pile of manuscripts. In an attractive later binding in red half-goat over marbled board with raised bands. We assume the binder was charged with binding a group of different books to a uniform size -- the title page is trimmed and mounted and all the other leaves are folded neatly to fit the bottom edge and then the leading edge over it. Rather astonishing actually. Very Good binding. J. Stockale; R. Faulder unknown books
