"Written by soldiers for soldiers" the articles were written by enlisted rank servicemen and made available to U.S servicemen throughout the world. Yank was not sold publicly and remained part of the serviceman's experience. "Yank The Army Weekly was a phenomenon of World War II that provided an insight into the nature of the American soldier that always will be valid. It provided an irreverent and honest account of the sharing suffering and frustrations of 14 million civilians in uniform during World War II." - The best of Yank. The tabloid magazine cost 5 cents and issue and was the most popular newspaper for American soldiers in WWII. Issues of YANK were distributed directly to combat units free of charge along with other vital supplies. <br> Some of the most interesting issues include: Oct. 5 1945. Staining to outer margins from adhesive. Contemporary marbled wrappers hand-lettered title on label on front wrapper endleaf becoming loose. The text leaf provides a name and description of each component of the Vickers machine gun with numbers corresponding to the finely detailed diagrams which follow. The Vickers gun was originally produced for the British Army and required a 6- to 8-person team to operate. It was in service from the First World War through the 1960s. France ordered 2000 Vickers guns in 1914 with another 12125 issued to the U. S. Army in France. Without place or date but in envelope with postmarke of Baile Atha Cliath Dublin Republic of Ireland 8 August 1979. 116pp. 4to. Paginated to 117 without a p.95 but with no text lacking. No prelims. Each page typed on a separate leaf and the whole bound together by string through punch holes. Text complete. Dog-eared and worn with the first two leaves separated from the rest. No record discovered of author or title. The play is set during the Second World War and begins: 'Afternoon fourclock . Late spring . side of road North Cork district six miles from town of Kilneesh Irishman trying to fix a tire . car protruding from wings showing a flat. He's sitting on a clump of gravel muttering to himself as Curtain Rises .' The driver's name is 'Jim Fitz' and he is joined by coincidence by 'Adam Hilson the bow'ld Black-n-Tan' whom he arrested two years before. The play proceeds through a series of reminiscences and flashbacks. No published version yet located. Printed in grey yellow red and blue on one side of a piece of paper roughly 33 x 41 cm with 'WINDY CORNER' in large letters at the head. 'Scale 10000'. Top Right "No 1 Sec". Folded three times. In fair condition lightly-aged and worn. Caption in margin reads: 'Information from all sources. Note: - Of the front line posts only those of permanent nature have been numbered'. The 'REFERENCE' lists: German Trenches; German Shell Hole Defences; German Splinter Proof Shell Holes; Main C. Ts.; British Line; Confirmed Batteries; Centres of Activity; Dugouts; Concrete not less than 2 inches; T.M.; T.M. Active; Post; MG; Dump; Roads much used; Main Tracks; Other. Included on the map are 'Suspected Wireless Installation' and 'Possible Telephone Exchange'. A rectangular section is marked 'FOR LOG TARGETS SEE CRATER MAP NO. 1'. Windy Corner was located to the north-west of Cuinchy on what was known as Westminster Bridge Road and featured a house that was used as a battalion HQ and dressing station. It is now the site of the Guards Cemetery which was begun in 1915 by the Second Division and was mostly used by the 4th Guards Brigade. The area was well-known to Robert Graves who was stationed there several times with the Royal Welch Fusiliers. Of the neighbouring town he writes in 'Goodbye to All That': 'Cuinchy bred rats. They came up from the canal fed on the plentiful corpses and multiplied exceedingly. While I stayed here with the Welsh a new officer joined the company . When he turned in that night he heard a scuffling shone his torch on the bed and found two rats on his blanket tussling for the possession of a severed hand.'
