‎[Mexican-American War]‎

‎Manuscript Letter Written by Ramon Adame Warning of the Approach of 10000 "Perfidious American Enemies" from the North‎

‎San Luis Potosi: May 8 1847. About very good. 2pp. Previously folded. Short closed tear and minor loss at edges of old horizontal fold. Small area of light staining. Accomplished in a neat secretarial script. A fascinating letter from the governor of San Luis Potosí Ramon Adame that relates reports on the northern front of the Mexican-American War written two months after the Battle of Saltillo and just days after the American invaders had captured Puebla to the south. The letter is addressed to Ignacio de Mora y Villamil the General-in-Chief of Mexico's northern army presumably with the goal of spurring action from his forces with this new information. Adame discusses troop movements and defenses in Real de Catorce and Matehuala to the north and relates reports from Mexican officers that 10000 American reinforcements were approaching Saltillo and Monterrey:

"Los referidos Capitanes aseguraron que la proxima entrante semana hacian sino habian hecho ya movimiento en direccion a estos puntos las fuerzas enemigas en numero de ocho a die mil hombres: que de Agua Nueva al Saltillo hay de cinco a seis mil y el resto en Monterey. En Matehuala hoy corre la voz unisona que dentro de quince o a los mas veinte dias deben llegarse por estas villas los enemigos."

He then writes at length concerning the need to improve observation of the nefarious American enemies in order that news might be received quickly and directly and inquires as to how to pay for such agents:

"Al vecindario a una finita para acordar medidas salvadores y principalmente que por carensia de fondos se espensare a una o dos personas que observase los moviminetos y direccion de los perfidos enemigos norte americanos no logre reuniera y ya la esperienca acreditada que no tienen efecto esta clase de emerciones. Lo que traslado a V.S. para conocimineto del E.S. Gobernador y con el fin de que se sirva decirme de que fondos puede hacerse el gasto para los agentes vigilan los operaciones del enemigo."

A very interesting snapshot of the lack of resources and organization that led to rapid defeat in the Mexican-American War. Very good. 19 leaves illustrated with about ninety unique photographs documents vouchers artwork newspaper clippings and other ephemeral items. Large quarto. Contemporary red cloth lettered in gilt on front cover string tied. Minor edge wear corners worn. Album leaves toned but contents generally sound. A unique assemblage of original materials and ephemera documenting the experiences of Richard Greeley Preston a young Princeton student recruited to work for the YMCA in Europe and Mesopotamia. Preston was attending Princeton in 1917 when a senior International YMCA executive secured his service along with twenty-three other Princetonians to support the British Army on the front lines. By the time the students arrived in London the United States had entered the war so instead of working for the British Army Preston was directed to establish YMCA sites at Besancon and Ponsex-les-Forges in France. Preston applied for a military commission in 1918 and was appointed as a First Lieutenant in the U.S. Army's Sanitation Corps in March and then assigned to the 41st Division. Following the Armistice Preston enrolled in the American School at the University of Paris and completed courses in French History literature thought and politics. After returning to the United States Preston became a missionary in Marion North Dakota for the Congregational Home Missionary Society despite not having any formal theological background. In 1933 he accepted a position of rector at the All Saints Episcopal Church in Worcester Massachusetts which he held until his retirement in 1958.

The present scrapbook memorializes much of Preston's activities beginning with his YMCA recruitment in 1917 and proceeding through his missionary work in 1921. The scrapbook opens with Preston's YMCA Certificate of Identification dated April 24 1917 illustrated with a photographic portrait of him listing his nationality as "Native American" and his position as "Secretary of the International Committee of the Young Men's Christian Association of North America." All but the last leaf of the album relates to Preston's service with the YMCA through his missionary work in North Dakota. The album concludes with a single letter from 1958 as well as a page of material dedicated to Preston's brother James Preston Sr.

A wonderful record of service related to the activities of a young Princetonian recruited to work for the YMCA in Europe and then felt the call of missionary work in the American West before serving in Massachusetts for the final twenty-five years of his career. unknown‎

‎[Spanish-American War]. [McCook Family]‎

‎Archive Containing Original Photographs Letters and Documents Pertaining to the Military and Post-Military Careers of Major General Alexander McDowell McCook and His Son-in-Law Brigadier General Chauncey Brooke Baker‎

‎Various locations in Cuba 1902. Very good. Seventeen loose folio scrapbook leaves each with mounted correspondence or other documents; one vernacular photograph album; two scrapbooks; and a small number of loose documents and newspaper clippings as detailed below. An informative archive comprised of material from two generations of the McCook family of Ohio specifically two different military officers -- Major General Alexander McDowell McCook and his son-in-law Brigadier General Chauncey Brooke Baker 1860-1936. Baker was married to McCook's eldest daughter Lucianna "Lucy" McCook Baker who seems to have compiled the various components of the present archive which mostly documents the career of her husband Chauncey Baker. The collection includes seventeen loose folio scrapbook leaves each with mounted correspondence or other documents one photograph album two scrapbooks and a small number of loose documents and newspaper clippings.

Union Army General Alexander McDowell McCook one of the "Fighting McCooks" continued his army career after the war in the regular Army. He commanded Fort Leavenworth Kansas from 1886-1890 the Department of Arizona from 1890-1893 and the Department of Colorado from 1893-1895. He was joined in each location by his daughter and son-in-law. Chauncey Brooke Baker married Lucy McCook while at Leavenworth and later served as McCook's aide-de-camp and acting engineering officer at Los Angeles and Denver Headquarters Department of Arizona and Colorado. Later promotions and the start of the Spanish-American War led Baker to Cuba in a quartermaster role. It seems his wife accompanied him there and began acquiring the images now housed in the photograph album offered here. Lucy Baker died in 1923 placing the scrapbooks completion date before that time. The material is detailed as follows:

1 Seventeen loose scrapbook leaves containing twenty-five pieces of correspondence typed documents and printed documents primarily associated with the later business dealings of Alexander M. McCook while he was stationed in Utah Colorado Kansas. This material dates mostly between 1882 and 1898. Letters are from a variety of correspondents and reflect McCook's post-war military career at frontier installations his involvement in the railroads investments and other personal matters. One of the more informative documents details the history of McCook's military service from his entry to West Point in 1847 through his appointment to the Department of Arizona in 1894. The collection also includes a handful of loose documents and letters as well as an envelope of newspaper clippings documenting McCook's later affairs. One notable item is a four-page offprint of a memorial of McCook written by Col. Horace N. Fisher and first published in the Boston Transcript on Sunday June 13 1903. General McCook had just passed away the previous day at Lucy's house in Dayton Ohio.

2 Vernacular Photograph Album Documenting Cuba Under Spanish Occupation and the United States Military Government's Occupation. Various locations in Cuba: ca. 1898-1902. 24 leaves illustrated with 303 silver gelatin photographs from 3.25 x 2.25 to 7.5 x 9 inches. Quarto. Contemporary three-quarter calf and black cloth boards. Spine perished most leaves separated from spine but held to each other by cloth gutter in a few groupings. Leaves worn silvering to some images. Inscribed on front free endpaper "Lucy McCook. Fort Leavenworth Kansas Nov 21st 1888." Lucy likely dated the album in 1888 then never used it as all of the images in the album emanate from Cuba. The photographs depict a mixture of rural and urban scenes featuring native Cubans as well as Americans Cuban and American military personnel landmarks military installations ships recreation building interiors with some images depicting the remnants of war. Notable are three large format photographs at the end of the album: a photograph of armed soldiers and a religious figure exiting a fortress-like structure with handwritten caption below "On the way to the Garote Castillo del Principe - during the Spanish occupation;" a photograph showing a large group of men assembled at tables and chairs in a gallery-style room with a handwritten caption reading "Opening of the Cuban Constitutional Convention - Havana - Nov. 5th 1900 General Leonard Wood Military Governor reading address in full uniform Temporary President on his left;" and a photograph of Havana's large cathedral with a crowd gathered captioned "Governor General Weyler entering Cathedral Havana Spanish Occupation." Captions were likely added by Lucy McCook whose husband was serving at the time as quartermaster chief quartermaster and depot quartermaster in the U.S. Army's Division and Department of Cuba. This album is the most historically-important and useful item in the present archive.

3 Scrapbook of Newspaper Clippings and an Original Drawing of an American Military Officer in Indian Territory. N.p.: early 1900s. 11 leaves illustrated with newspaper clippings and one drawing. Quarto. Contemporary brown cloth elaborately tooled in black title in gilt on front cover and spine. Moderate wear rubbing and dust-soiling. Inscribed on front free endpaper "Lucy McCook Baker / Los Angeles - California / April 1892." An interesting collection of mostly newspaper clippings associated with Native American rituals related to the Moqui Indians the Army and articles on General McCook or Lieutenant Chauncey Baker. The album also includes an original pen drawing titled in manuscript "Tent of The Macauley in Camp at Guthrie I.T. 20th June 1889." The drawing features a military figure standing in a road holding a small shovel in the air in front of a sign pointing one way to Oklahoma and the other way to Ft. Leavenworth. The drawing is signed at bottom "Glück."

4 Scrapbook of Ephemeral Items Relating to the Military Careers of Alexander McDowell McCook and Chauncey Baker Plus Later Items Related to Another Member of the McCook Family. N.p.: early 1900s. 9 leaves illustrated with telegrams pamphlets invitations and other ephemeral items. Quarto. Contemporary aqua cloth with gilt titles on front cover string tied. The items primarily concern McCook's and Baker's military service including an "In Memoriam" for Alexander McDowell McCook as well as some items relating to the later military career of Alexander McCook Craigshead.

A diverse collection of materials relating to the careers of two notable military men serving in the American West and in Cuba during the Spanish-American War with a wonderful vernacular photograph album documenting the latter and the whole likely retained and organized by the daughter and wife respectively of the men involved. unknown‎

‎Mexican American War. Winsor Daniel S.‎

‎Letter Written by Daniel Winsor a Merchant Ship Captain Describing Business in New Orleans During the Mexican-American War‎

‎New Orleans 1848. Very good. 2pp. on a single folded sheet verso of integral blank addressed in ink. Original mailing folds minor wear. An informative manuscript letter providing a snapshot of the state of American shipping out of Mexico during the Mexican-American War. Daniel Winsor was ship captain and agent for Magoun & Son Boston shipowners. Winsor was the son of Nathaniel Winsor Jr. and Hannah Loring. Winsor and his wife the former Sally Bartlett Simpson lived in Duxbury Massachusetts but beginning in 1847 the family lived the first several months of the year in New Orleans. Winsor operated mainly out of Boston but spent considerable time trading in New Orleans. He owned commanded or had an interest in almost a dozen ships and traveled extensively around the world during his career. Winsor sent the present letter to the merchants Magoun and Son long-standing shipping merchants whose ships were noted for their speed and dependability. During the period in which the present letter was written Magoun and Son operated between Boston and New York south to New Orleans and the Caribbean and eastward to Liverpool and coastal France. Cargoes typically included cotton sugar molasses hemp and Spanish specie.

In the present letter Daniel Winsor writing aboard the sloop Homeopathy describes in detail the state of trade in Vera Cruz during the Mexican-American War. He provides news about the war through the lens of the American mercantile trade writing that "the return Ships are coming in finely from V.C. Vera Cruz and the last company of volunteers up at Mexico came up this morning and it seems that Timoleon had to go leeward of her port and was in tow of the Steamer going in when. Capt. T was coming out therefore it is evident that she will bring Regulars & the Pharsalea instead of going to Hampton Roads will come here with Regulars & get $6000.00 instead of $7500.00. I have been told that the Government have stopped the sale of property in V.C. and all the horses mules camp equipage & stores is to be shipped to ports in the U. States. Horses were sold at $7 apiece before the sale was stopped." He also provides further details on the woeful condition of freight costs which he describes as "growing worse & worse." He notes that a ship heading to Boston which could demand a price of $3500 two weeks ago should now expect less than $1500. An interesting letter detailing mercantile history during the period of the Mexican-American War. unknown‎

‎[Philippine-American War]. [Photography]. Givens, James D.‎

‎Philippines Cuba Porto Rico the Hawaiian Islands and Scenes Relating to Soldiers J.D. Givens Photographer box cover title‎

‎San Francisco: J.D. Givens 1905. Very good. 251 halftone photographs on glossy paper each 5 x 7 inches each with printed caption in lower margin loose in original box. Box rubbed worn and chipped top detached along one flap each corner of box bottom separated. Images in very good or better condition. A notable collection of photographs illustrating various aspects of the Philippine-American War produced by an important San Francisco photographer. James D. Givens operated a studio in the Presidio for many years. He traveled to the Philippines in 1903 on an Army transport ship where he took notable pictures of the current conflict. The present collection with Givens' studio imprint on the top of the box was likely issued around 1905. The collection contains a mixture of his work as well as many photographs produced by Perley Fremont Rockett and some photographs by uncredited photographers all copied and sold by Givens without credit or attribution. According to an article in the Spring 2002 issue of Prologue Givens would later publish several different books claiming credit for other photographers' work. Despite the cover title which claims to show images from four locations the present collection features the Philippines almost exclusively. The numbering system within the images is inconsistent with some of Givens' images employing its own numbering system and Rockett's images with different numbers in the negatives which makes sense given that Givens basically stole them. The images were likely selected by the original purchaser which was a common practice for photographic groups during this time.

The images contain vital and wide-ranging photographic information regarding the war made especially easy to recognize through the printed captions. The images feature indigenous Filipino armies and various indigenous peoples street and market scenes in various cities a range of views of the rural Philippines notable Filipino buildings and indigenous structures the aftermath of battle scenes scenes during the surrender views inside military hospitals and much much more. Many of the images capture the American presence in the country picturing the U.S Customs House American soldiers on march and in their quarters American teachers and their Filipino students and so forth.

A sampling of the captions featuring native Filipinos provides further flavor of the overall nature of the images which show: "Filipinos Saluting the American Flag at Laguna Samar Philippine Islands" "General Luna Assassinated by Order of Aguinaldo" "Grass Peddlers P.I." "Igarrotes and their delicious dog feast" "Tagalog Family" "Petty King of the Tinguianes and His Guard Abra Luzon" "Filipino Belles in Native Costume" "Filipino Children" "Types of Filipino Women" "Savages of Northern Luzon" "Luzon Milk Peddlers" "Igarrote Head Hunters" a shot of eight naked Filipino children smoking cigars "Type of Southern Luzon Iggorotte" a group shot of young Filipinos captioned "The Future Civil Authorities in the Philippines" and more. Some of the photographs capture the violence of war including a scene of the gallows in Pardo Ladrones a group of corpses in a trench captioned "War Is Hell" "The Bone Pit of the Manila Cemetery" "Burying a Filipino" a shot of American soldiers "Returning With the Dead and Wounded" more corpses "Found in the Trenches after Battle" and more.

The present collection does not appear in OCLC under the cover title. A similar assemblage of 229 images with a slightly different title is housed at Stanford though Givens' eclectic numbering system prevents all but in-person comparison. In any case the collection contains rare and informative images of the conflict featuring a wide variety of subjects and scenes during the Philippine-American War. An instant collection of war images for any institution. J.D. Givens unknown‎

‎Spanish American War. Shipboard Printing‎

‎Squadron Bulletin. U.S. Flagship New York June 23 & July 21 1898‎

‎Santiago de Cuba & Guantanamo Bay: June 23 July 21-22 1898. Very good. Two broadsides each about 8 x 5 inches. Old folds minor wear unevenly trimmed likely at time of production. A pair of unit bulletins produced aboard the U.S. Flagship New York while anchored off the coast of Cuba during two slightly different moments of the Spanish-American War. The earlier bulletin is dated June 23 1898 and the second follows almost a month later; the Battle of Santiago took place between these dates during which the New York played a major role. The ship served as the flagship of Admiral Sampson of the combined "North Atlantic" and "Flying" squadrons dedicated to destroying Spanish naval vessels in the Caribbean. The present bulletins were prepared by the squad's captain French E. Chadwick and report on numerous movements of American military forces mainly of other ships as well as other war news. The earlier bulletin also reports on the recent landing of 7000 soldiers at Santiago de Cuba advancing towards Ensenada de los Altares. These bulletins are rare survivals of wartime printing and also even rarer examples of wartime printing aboard an American seagoing vessel. They also serve as a valuable record of the reporting of events and strategies employed by the American military during this period. The bulletins were apparently reprinted not long after the war ended but were greatly augmented; the present examples offer the opportunity to read the original content printed on board the New York during the conflict. Institutional holdings of the original bulletins are rare with scattered quantities reported at five places -- the Library of Congress Newberry Harvard the Pennsylvania Office of Commonwealth Libraries and the Huntington. June 23, July 21-22 unknown‎

‎[Civil War]. [Nebraska]. Miller, George L.‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed from Nebraska Territory Pioneer George L. Miller to Nebraska General Samuel Ryan Curtis Reporting on Some Dirty Politics and Including a Brief Appraisal of the Frontier Town of Omaha‎

‎Fort Kearny Ne: October 28 1862. Very good plus. 4pp. on a single folded sheet of lined paper. Light wear and toning old folds. An interesting manuscript letter written by Dr. George Lorin Miller 1839-1920 a leading Nebraska pioneer and instrumental figure in establishing Fort Kearny. Miller also served as the fort's sutler during the Civil War and helped to recruit the First Nebraska Regiment. Miller was a physician politician editor and land owner who arrived in Omaha in 1854 the year the city was founded. Miller himself founded the Omaha Herald which later became the Omaha World-Herald and was. staunch Democrat who became adept at harnessing the power of the press.

Here Miller writes to an unnamed general in Helena Arkansas who was most likely Samuel Ryan Curtis. Miller's letter is well-written providing insights into and details of the politics war news and other information of the period. He is friendly to his correspondent noting that the two men had been political opponents in the past but Miller states that he supported the candidacy of his correspondent as "Colonel of our Regiment because I believed you capable and patriotic." Miller praises him for being recognized by no less than the President for "gallant services authenticated as they were by the best officers of the service" and then bemoans the fact that the correspondent was denied an appointment by the Senate due to the "mendacious meanness" of a Nebraska politician named Samuel G. Daily who apparently worked against his confirmation. Then Miller notes that Daily had to answer for his denial of the correspondent's appointment on the recent campaign trail where Daily "had to meet your case in the canvass at every turn -- apologized lied and smoothed it over as he best could. Denying everything and admitting nothing saved him by about 100 votes." He continues to encourage his correspondent with supportive language and then closes with a short appraisal of their shared hometown in the Nebraska Territory: "Omaha is changing much but it will not outrun your recollection of it. When you return you will see as I see that it is a real home after all however changed its appearance. October 28 unknown‎

‎[Mexico]. [Reform War]‎

‎Ley para Castigar los Delitos Contra la Nacion Contra el Orden y la Paz Publica‎

‎Mexico City: Imprenta de Ignacio Cumplido 1856. Still very good. 17pp. Original printed wrappers bound into full calf front board gilt lettered. Some toning and scattered light foxing. This law was promulgated at the end of 1856 by the new liberal government of Mexico following its ascendancy in the mid-1850s and preceded the reform Constitution of 1857 by two months. Its statutes defined "crimes against the independence and security of the nation" including various forms of treason rebellion and foreign military service or assistance and made them punishable by death. The law anticipated conservative resistance and revolt against the new policies of the liberal faction that aimed to strip power and influence from the church and traditional aristocracy of the country. Their efforts indeed led to full-scale civil war in 1858 and the second French intervention in the early 1860s. OCLC locates a small handful of institutional copies and we locate just one in available sales records. Scarce and in attractive original wrappers. Imprenta de Ignacio Cumplido unknown‎

‎Washington DC 1945. Very good. Thirteen items plus three duplicates. Light toning; minor wear and dust soiling. Interesting group of just over a dozen leaflets pamphlets and circulars created and disseminated by the National Council for the Prevention of War NCPW before and during World War II. The organization was founded in 1921 by Congregational and Quaker minister Frederick J. Libby after he worked for the American Red Cross in France following World War I. The NCPW pushed for disarmament and neutrality during the interwar years and for peace after America's entrance into World War II. The present group contains several items from each period as well as some fascinating transitional material such as a mimeograph circular titled "What Peace Organization National and Local Can Do in Wartime" dated eleven days after the attack on Pearl Harbor. A good encapsulation of the council's work during this period. unknown‎

A manuscript letter embodying a unique view of the Mexican-American War and Mexico itself by John Lamb a soldier from North Carolina writing from a military hospital in Saltillo. Lamb reports that his regiment of North Carolina volunteers has been decimated by the war and disease the latter of which "has reduced me to a perfect skeleton." He reports briefly on the activities and impact of the war but the majority of the letter is consumed with Lamb's description of Mexico and its people architecture produce and more: "I have been in Mexico now nearly six months & am perfectly satisfied to return home if I could. The country does agree with me atall. They say Scott has whipped Santiana & we will have peace in a short time. There is many of our brave boys that came out with us will never see their native land parents & relations more for they are now lying in silent slumber beneath the clods of Mexico. We have lost over two hundred men & a great many discharged. I will now tell you something about Mexico. It is a very fine country and has some of the richest lands & finest buildings as any I ever saw. All the Mexicans lack is proper farming tools & timber to fence in their land & if they were industrious they could make independent fortunes. They use wooden plows mostly drawn by two oxen which they make but poor speed with owing to the hardness of the earth. As to fencing they use the brush that is taken off of the land which they say lasts many years. The principal pursuit in which they are engaged are gardening & the raising of stock which they sell. The gardens and vineyards in this country are not to be equaled by any in America and they raise all kinds of fruit & that the finest kind. You can go to the market any morning & see hundreds of bushels of fruit of the finest kind of grapes figs peaches & every thing you can call for but all very high. The Mexicans are a peculiar people to themselves the most of them are a copper colour with strait black hair. There are some however that are white & more refined & dress very tasty. They think more of their churches than any thing else. There is in this town six or eight & they have the bells ringing every hour which makes a tremendous noise. The workmanship of these Churches can't be beat by no workman & the inside work is magnificent the alters and all around is ornamented with gold. All the buildings here are fine made chiefly of brick & stone & have flat tops but lower down about the banks of the Rio Grande they live in miserable huts composed of cains palmetto &c. ‎[World War II]. [Anti-Conscription Committee]‎

‎Peacetime Conscription -- Another Fellow Who Was for It! with: Conscription‎

‎New York 1945. Still very good. Two small broadsides each measuring approximately 11 x 7 inches. Some toning at edges. Two broadside flyers issued by a little known pacifist group the Anti-Conscription Committee during the last year of World War II. The first titled "Peacetime Conscription." invokes Hitler's introduction of compulsory military training in Germany in 1935 and quotes an enthusiastic editorial from the Des Moines Tribune calling for the same in America. The broadside intones at its foot "A nation followed these ideas! Do you want America to do the same" The second flyer "Conscription" warns its reader of the imminence of a Congressional bill that would mandate a year of military training that would "Bring about vast changes in our American way of life." Following this warning is a laundry list of diverse associations arrayed against the potential law including the Rabbinical Association of America the N.A.A.C.P. the American Federation of Labor the Society of Friends and the W.T.C.U. to name but a few. A pair of scarce survivors. unknown‎

‎[Mexican-American War]. [Indentured Servitude]‎

‎Manuscript Letter Signed from a Local Mexican Business Associate to a Texas Merchant Who Supplied the American Army During the Mexican-American War‎

‎Carmago Mexico: June 21 1847. Very good. 2pp. in Spanish on a single folded sheet verso of integral leaf addressed on verso. Original mailing folds mild wrinkling minor toning to address panel small chip to outer blank portion of integral leaf. A hand-carried letter from a Mexican merchant or lawyer named Francisco Perez to Benjamin S. Grayson a Texas associate in Carmago Mexico during the Mexican-American War. Perez writes to Grayson about some legal actions and the transfer of certain tercieros sharecroppers bound in servitude through Mexico's feudal hacienda system. Grayson may have threatened legal action against Perez. The letter reads in part in rough English translation: "D. Pedro Garcia left ten sharecroppers at my house the same ones the Mayor Jose Pio Salinas received at my door. These same ten sharecroppers were part of the twenty-one sharecroppers you and Mr. Davis told me the mayor gave to you. You can be sure that if I thought I owed you that I would have asked you for time to satisfy you. I would not have needed the courts to tell me. I am fully satisfied with the time you allowed for this trial to end. I know that the law has stopped the fugitives. It is very good that the lawyer knew the case and agreed with the term of twenty-seven days. Mr. Ate. l wants to explain to us why you should be satisfied with it. The results of the trial will be enforced by the judge; laws against the two legitimate debtors will be rigorously executed. Without objection I wait for your orders."

Benjamin S. Grayson and his brother Thomas Wigg Grayson relocated to Texas from South Carolina sometime before 1835 at which time Benjamin established a mercantile business. Both brothers became involved in the Texas Revolution and were part owners of the famous privateer the Thomas Toby which Thomas also captained. After Texas gained its independence Benjamin moved to San Antonio where he unsuccessfully ran for mayor. While there he purchased land script that had been used to pay Texas soldiers and became a wealthy landowner. Fearing malaria Grayson expanded his business to more remote locations in Mexico where he ran his business from haciendas in Monterrey and Carmago. When the American Army entered Mexico during the Mexican-American War it set up a base camp at Carmago from which Grayson provided supplies and equipment. Following his time in Mexico Grayson turned his attentions to the California Gold Rush. In early 1849 he personally led a mule train of goods presumably mining supplies from Mexico to Los Angeles. Grayson made another fortune grubstaking miners and acquired significant property around San Francisco where he died in July 1849. June 21 unknown‎

‎Mexican American War‎

‎Autograph Letter Signed from Lieutenant Arthur Breese Lansing a Quartermaster Officer Serving During the Mexican-American War To His Father Barent Bleeker Lansing in Utica New York Regarding the Climate and His Activities After Arriving at the Principal Gulf Coast Supply Depot at Brazos Santiago Texas Illustrated with a Hand-drawn Map of the Area‎

‎Brazos Santiago: February 18 1847. Very good. 2pp. plus integral blank second leaf addressed on verso. Old folds. Small hole in address leaf from removed wax seal. An original wartime correspondence from Lieutenant Arthur Lansing a quartermaster officer recently arrived at the principal Mexican-American War Gulf Coast supply depot and transportation hub at Brazos Santiago Texas illustrated with a hand-drawn map showing the sand bar that impeded offloading of transports and slowed the movement of supplies and personnel up the Rio Grande. The first page contains Lansing’s letter the second his hand-drawn map. The text of the letter reads in part: "I have been ordered to report to.the QM Dept at this place - the most humid place in Christendom worse by far that Fort Brown. I have been sick since here the water is bad - my old complaint the Diarrhea. I am living on board a steamboat fitted up & called the 'Greenwood Hotel' - $10.00 a week - Astor house prices in all things. Gen Jesup the Chief of the QM Dept. is daily expected here. On his arrival I shall try to procure orders to go North. I have been so long in the country that my constitution is more or less affected by the climate. That you may understand the location of Brazos I add a sketch on the opposite side. The troops are being Embarked as fast as possible but still slowly. The elements are more to be contended against. What is their destination I cannot say with certainty. I have not recd any letter yet by the last mail. I suppose they have gone to Matamoros. They may be here in a day or two. Brazos is a sandy island - all sand up to your ancles."

Lansing’s map shows the Mexico-Texas coast the Rio Grande Fort Brown and Matamoros Point Isabel Laguna del Madre Padre Island Brazos Santiago and the sand “Bar of Brazos†that hampered shipping. Lansing shows large ships anchored outside the sand bar and smaller vessels around Brazos Santiago. This first-person illustration of this specific area of the Texas-Mexico region is a unique contemporary view of an important location during the Mexican-American War.

During the Mexican War General Zachary Taylor established a supply depot and transportation hub at Brazos Santiago where supplies and personnel were offloaded because seagoing ships could not cross over the sand bar. Supplies were then transported to Fort Brown and Matamoros by smaller vessels or oxcarts to Fort Brown and Matamoros. During the war several thousand American troops moved through the port. Brown’s mention of the Greenwood Hotel is interesting. Other army travelers mention it as well reporting that the wreck of a beached steamboat “was firmly wedged in the sand. It had been repaired and rendered weather-proof by the mud and mortar generally made use of for building purposes in these primitive regions. A bar-room and eating-room formed the principal apartments with several sleeping rooms of limited area adjoining which were the accommodations of the boarders. It was kept by an old woman and her pretty little granddaughter about twelve years old who was receiving an education to fit her for the responsible position of bar-maid to this ‘Hotel Texian.’†Another source a tongue-in-cheek article in the United States Magazine and Democrat Review reported a room at the Greenwood cost "four dollars a day with no extra charge for fleas mosquitoes and dirt!"

Lansing was an artillery lieutenant when he was detailed to quartermaster duties at Brazos Santiago. Prior to that he served on the Northern Frontier near Buffalo New York during the border disturbances with Canada in the military occupation of Texas and at the defense of Fort Brown. Later he served as the Assistant Quartermaster at forts in Texas Louisiana Ohio Arkansas and the Indian Territory before leaving the service in 1851.

Communications from Brazos Santiago are incredibly scarce both institutionally and in the trade. No printed or manuscript maps of Brazos Santiago and only one Brazos Santiago letter have appeared at auction per Rare Book Hub. OCLC shows only one institution holding of a printed map of the Brazos Santiago region and no institutions hold hand-drawn maps. OCLC reports just two institutions holding letters from Brazos Santiago. February 18 unknown‎

‎[World War I]. [American Expeditionary Force, Siberia]. Soden, Lester W.‎

‎Archive of Annotated Real Photo Postcards Picture Postcards and Photographs Amounting to a Narrative of an American Serviceman's Experiences in Russia During the American Expeditionary Force in Siberia As Well As Several Other Locations Around the World‎

‎Vladivostok Russia; China; Japan; Philippines; Cuba; Panama; and Egypt 1922. Very good plus. Ninety-six real photo postcards postcards and photographs each about 3.5 x 5.5 inches or slightly smaller. A very well-preserved group arranged in clear plastic sleeves in a brad-bound folder. An informative and ultimately unique collection of mostly annotated images documenting the military exploits of Lester W. Soden of Portland Oregon a Navy Midshipman serving in important locations in Asia and elsewhere in the years immediately following World War I. Soden sent the postcards and photographs home to various family members and friends in Portland Oregon. On the verso of the great majority of the postcards and photographs Soden has added vital typed or handwritten captions describing the subject location or other important information for each image as well as occasionally adding a personal note about them. Most of the images do not exhibit postmarks so were likely sent along by Soden with letters.

Most important among Soden's experiences here and encompassing almost half of the images forty-seven in fact was his time in Vladivostok Russia in 1918-1920 as part of the American Expeditionary Force Siberia. All but four of the postcards and photographs from Russia have typed captions on the verso providing critical background information on Soden's experiences. Soden's captions run from one line "Street scene in Vladdie" to a couple of lines "View of Vladivostok Siberia showing section of the city along the tracks of the Siberian railroad and one of the fine Russian churches in the back ground. This was taken but a week ago" to detailed much longer efforts for example: "Since coming to Siberia I have not seen a single saw mill where modern machinery such as power driven saws and etc was used. Here is a picture I took the other day in Vladivostok showing the Asiatic method of making lumber. The Chinamen do the work two men to a saw one on top of the framework that serves for a work bench the other stands on the ground and away they saw on logs turning out lumber of various thicknesses. When first I witnessed such ancient methods it seemed as tho I had stepped into a land of long ago but time has accustomed me to such sights in Siberia."

Soden's other images provide a deep picture of the Vladivostok area at a crucial time in its history picturing street scenes the funeral of "a deceased shipmate who died at Vladivostok" the Bay of the Golden Horn Japanese headquarters and a Japanese market in the city troops and ships from other Allied countries a YMCA train car serving coffee to soldiers a Bolshevik armored car stuck in the mud a portrait of Czech leader General Radola Gajda here spelled Gaida two images of Gajda's armored train car which he used in a failed attempt to occupy Vladivostok in 1918 and much more. Part of the Allied mission in Vladivostok involved protecting and providing passage for Czech troops who had fought for their own freedom against Lenin and the Russian revolutionaries. One of Soden's captions concern these freedom fighters: "Czech troops along the trans-Siberian R.R. coming into Vladivostok. They have some sort of decorations on the cars. You will notice the odd style of cars used with single axeled wheels that are not solid steel like the car wheels we have in the States where only double tracks are used. The cars here are very short tho once in a while one notices standard sized cars with double tracks identical to the ones used in the States in fact they were built there."

In addition to his time in Siberia Soden also served in China Japan Manchuria the Philippines Egypt Panama and Cuba. Seventeen postcards document his experiences in China as well as sixteen in Japan and Manchuria eight in the Philippines and the remainder from Egypt Panama and Cuba. Most of these images are also captioned on the verso picturing street scenes a Peking sawmill the city of Shanghai Tartar Wall Hankow a Dragon Festival in Hong Kong the Nanking Road and more in China. Most of the Japanese images show the celebrations in Tokyo for the return of Hirohito from a tour of Europe but also temples in Nikko the American fleet in Yokohama and two street views of Dairen City Manchuria. Other images depict a child's funeral "The other day I was lucky enough to see a native funeral one of the strangest sights I've ever seen. You would think it's a parade" and a Manila river scene in the Philippines; Guantanamo Bay in Cuba; the United Fruit Company's offices in Panama; and more. The only non-visual item included with the postcards and photographs is a black ribbon reading "U.S.S. Scorpion" presumably Soden's ship. unknown‎

‎[World War I]. [American Expeditionary Force, Siberia]‎

‎Vernacular Photograph Album Documenting the Allied North Russian Intervention in Vladivostok Just After World War I‎

‎Mainly Vladivostok 1922. Very good. 261 images about half real photo postcards and half vernacular photographs between 2.5 x 1.5 inches and 3.5 x 5.5 inches. Oblong folio. Contemporary brown leather photograph album string-tied. Lacking fore-edge flap spine chipped moderate rubbing and scuffing to boards. Minor occasional wear to photographs. A unique collection of photographs documenting the joint military expedition by Allied Forces into Vladivostok in southeastern Russia after the conclusion of World War I the October Revolution and the Russian Civil War most likely assembled by an American soldier serving there at the time. The American contingent of the incursion was called the American Expeditionary Force Siberia which partnered with nine other countries to attempt to bring stability to the region rescue 40000 members of the Czechoslovakian Legion being held up by Bolsheviks outside Vladivostok protect and retrieve American supplies in eastern Russia and stem the early spread of Communism. A similar expedition to northern Russia now known as the Polar Bear Expedition was attempted in Archangel. By practically every standard the joint missions failed and in fact damaged relations between the Allied Forces and Russia especially for the United States for decades to come.

The present collection of photographs and real-photo postcards opens with several photo postcards with printed captions showing parades of the military forces of the various Allied countries who participated in the expedition to Vladivostok as they arrived in the city. These include the British Army landing in Vladivostok the Imperial Japanese Expedition marching in front of the Czech Headquarters the Japanese Vanguard relieving the Imperial Japanese Naval Party the French Army landing in the city the Allied Naval Fleet in the Vladivostok harbor and two views of the landing of the American Army. Two additional captioned postcards show the Czech forces joining the French Army and a rather shocking image of about ten dead Czech soldiers with the image captioned "Czech victims in vicinity of Nicholoske former Bolshevik Head-quarters at Vladivostok."

The remainder of the photo postcards and photographs capture additional parades numerous street scenes but also scores of images showing the outskirts and countryside around Vladivostok ships from various countries anchored in the harbor or trying to navigate the icy conditions military patrols often carrying weapons American and other soldiers interacting with the locals scenes along the railway views of refugees fleeing the region and much more. Upon arriving in Vladivostok American soldiers were tasked with guarding segments of the rail lines of the Trans-Siberian Railroad running into and out of Vladivostok. American forces are seen here performing those duties but also overseeing a temporary dormitory of beds in an evacuation hospital patrolling the area around the city as well as the refugees along the railway hanging out in their makeshift barracks and more with one image even showing a group of American soldiers posing in baseball uniforms.

Particularly striking are the images of the indigenous refugees posed near the railroad and in other locations. Some of the subjects appear to be Siberian nomads but others traveling along the rail line are almost certainly Czech refugees fleeing Russia after their role in fighting for their own freedom against the new Russian regime. Several photos here capture groups of people obviously en route to somewhere else along the railroad at train depots and resting in makeshift encampments or tent cities overseen by military personnel.

Historical material from the Vladivostok expedition is exceedingly rare especially images of soldiers with boots on the ground. The present collection provides a fascinating glimpse of life in Vladivostok during this volatile moment in Russian history as well as a notable instance when American and Allied gunboat diplomacy utterly failed. unknown‎

‎Mexican American War. Miles Dixon Stansbury‎

‎Headquarters of the Army Mexico February 4 1848. General Orders - No. 45. Proceedings of a Court of Inquiry Convened at Tacubaya Mexico by Virtue of the Following Order. To Examine into the Facts and Circumstances Connected with the Loss of Certain Pack Mules on the 4th Inst. While Under the Escort of a Column of Troops Commanded by Lieut. Colonel Miles. caption title‎

‎Mexico City 1848. Very good. 3pp. Printed on a single folded sheet. Dbd. Old vertical fold minor foxing. A rare United States Army field printing pertaining to a notable incident that occurred during the Mexican-American War. In early January 1848 Lt. Col. Miles was ordered by Brig. Gen. Twiggs to take command of a wagon train and a small cadre of troops and then conduct them from northern Mexico to Mexico City. Mexican merchants availed themselves of the escort for safe conduct of their merchandise to the capital city and other destinations in the interior of the country. The wagon train consisted of 316 government wagons which stretched to three miles in length with 1700 pack mules adding another nine miles to the procession. Col. Miles had 1300 troops under his command but only 150 of them were cavalry. Mexican guerillas under the command of Zenobia attacked the train between Santa Fe and Rio San Juan resulting in the loss of 300 pack mules along with the goods belonging to the Mexican merchants. Col. Miles was then brought up on charges in a military Court of Inquiry at Tacubaya Mexico the details and results of which are recorded in the present work. In short Col. Miles was exonerated of any misconduct especially considering that he only had "a small number of troops" at his command. The heart of the judgement states that "Lieut. Col. Miles exercised unusual prudence and foresight in his precautionary measures and that his entire arrangements upon the march were most judicious and officer-like and that instead of meriting censure or even animadversion the conduct of Lieut. Col. Miles entitles him to high commendation."

The incident was described in a contemporary account recorded by American soldier Orlando B. Wilcox: "July 19. New acquaintance named Clark a sutler who was at Buena Vista.saw Zenobia's attack on Col. Miles' train. The Mexican merchants &c. whose pack mules the escort was protecting stood on a hill & saw Walker whipt & gave no assistance though they were numerous together & well armed. Zenobia made a dash at the pack mules. Clark was driven along with the crowd. Saw a volunteer try to cut the girth to save his pack; a lancer cut his head off at a clip. Zenobia left Clark as a prisoner charge of two men to 'whip the yankees.' Charge in deep files cavalry toward Walker's whose forty men dismounted. Walker was at their head; they gave way. Mex's dashed forward & on coming up wheeled to right & left" - Willcox.

Dixon Stansbury Miles 1804-1862 served a wide-ranging career in the American Army. He fought in the Indian Wars the Seminole Wars and with particular distinction during the Mexican-American War before losing his life early in the Civil War. While commander of the Union garrison at Harper's Ferry in 1862 a time in his career when he had been censured by the Army for drunkenness he was mortally wounded while surrendering to Stonewall Jackson's forces during the Confederate invasion of Maryland.
Willcox Orlando B. ‎Texas. World War I‎

‎Bird's Eye View. Camp Bowie Fort Worth Tex. October 1917‎

‎Chicago: Mayhart Studio 1917. Very good. Large panoramic photograph 8 x 90.5 inches. Rolled. Light wear at edges with a couple of small chips and very short closed tears along top edge. minor dust soiling and toning. A fabulous and extremely long panoramic photograph measuring approximately 7.5 feet in length that depicts Camp Bowie in Fort Worth during October 1917. At this time the camp was still under construction but also housed an entire infantry division in training for World War I. Ongoing construction efforts are clearly evident as piles of lumber in various states of organization occupy the field in the center foreground. Already completed barracks and other out buildings occupy the right of the image and thousands of army tents sweep into the background of the center and left portions of the image. A group of standard houses likely for officers and their families is located at the lower left of the image. The photographers Mayhart Studio of Chicago were responsible for a number of military and patriotic views during the United States' involvement in the Great War including the well-known "Living Flag" image of thousands of servicemen composing an American flag.

"Construction of Camp Bowie began on July 18 1917. The camp in the Arlington Heights neighborhood about three miles west of downtown Fort Worth was established by the United States War Department to give training to the Thirty-sixth Infantry Division. Local officials expected financial gain and urged that the camp be located at Fort Worth. Including the adjacent rifle range and trench system the site encompassed 2186 acres. Camp Bowie's greatest average monthly strength was recorded in October 1917 as 30901. For about five months after the departure of the Thirty-sixth for France in July 1918 the camp functioned as an infantry replacement and training facility with monthly population ranging from 4164 to 10527. Shortly after the Armistice on November 11 1918 Camp Bowie was designated a demobilization center. By May 31 1919 it had discharged 31584 men. The heaviest traffic occurred in June when it processed thousands of combat veterans of the Thirty-sixth and Ninetieth Texas-Oklahoma divisions. The demobilization having been concluded Camp Bowie was closed on August 15 1919" -- Handbook of Texas Online.

A quite remarkable photographic document of this short-lived World War I-era army camp in Fort Worth whose grounds and surrounding neighborhood are now touted by the municipal tourism office as "the city's premier commerce corridor." We locate no other examples of this excellent and large panorama. Mayhart Studio unknown‎

‎Birds Eye View of Camp Travis. San Antonio Texas. Oct. 1917‎

‎San Antonio 1917. Very good. Large panoramic photograph 8 x 92 inches. Rolled. Minor wear at edges with one very short closed tear at top edge. Light blemish in negative at center of image. Light dust soiling and toning. An outstanding and extremely long panoramic photograph measuring well over 7.5 feet in length that depicts Camp Travis in San Antonio following its recent opening. Although the camp was open and housing an entire division-in-training at the time of this image the camp was still under construction as evidenced by the organized piles of lumber at the far right of the image and the incomplete barracks building in the center foreground. The panorama nevertheless gives a sense of the scope and size of the training camp with barracks and outbuildings stretching almost as far as the eye can see in the center and left sections of the photograph. Structures are sparser in the right-hand side of the image both because they as yet unbuilt and because some of the training fields were located in this part of the camp. The photographers Mayhart Studio of Chicago were responsible for a number of military and patriotic views during the United States' involvement in the Great War including the well-known "Living Flag" image of thousands of servicemen composing an American flag.

"On July 15 1917 after its selection as the training site for the Ninetieth Texas-Oklahoma Division of the army Camp Wilson was renamed Camp Travis in honor of Alamo hero William B. Travis. The camp was ready for occupancy on August 25 1917. Additional land was subsequently acquired for vital training facilities and numerous structures were erected by the soldier welfare agencies. Camp Travis comprised 18290 acres of which 5730 were on the main campsite adjoining Fort Sam Houston. The Ninetieth Division was organized at Camp Travis in September and October of 1917. During the summer of 1918 Camp Travis served as an induction and replacement center with an average strength in July of about 34000 White and Black troops. On December 3 Camp Travis was named as a demobilization center. The facility was also designated a local recruiting station and a regional recruit depot in March 1919. Some 62500 troops were discharged at Camp Travis in about eight months. The camp then became the home station of the Second Division. Its service as a separate entity was terminated however upon its absorption by Fort Sam Houston in 1922" -- Handbook of Texas Online.

A quite fascinating view of this enormous World War I-era training camp in San Antonio now a part of the even larger Fort Sam Houston military base on the east side of the city. We locate no other copies of this large and remarkable panorama. unknown‎
