June 27 1864. 1 p. 9 x 10¾ in.<p>A New York Tribune reporter praises the performance of the USCT: <i>"I find that in my account of the assault upon the rebel works in front of Petersburg I hardly did the colored troops justice. As before stated they held a position on the Jourdan Point road.They were first directed to assault the earthwork.the charge upon the advanced works was made in splendid style; and as the 'dusky warriors' stood shouting upon the parapet Gen. Smith decided that 'they would do' and sent word for them to storm the first redoubt. Steadily these troops moved on led by officers whose unostentatious bravery is worthy of emulation. With a shout and rousing cheers they dashed at the redoubt. Grape and canister were hurled at them by the infuriated rebels. They grinned and pushed on and with a yell that told the southern chivalry their doom rolled irresistibly over and into the work. The guns were speedily turned upon those of our 'misguided brethren' who forgot that 'discretion was the better part of valor.' </i></p><p><i>Another redoubt was carried in the same gallant style and the negroes have established a reputation that they will surely maintain."</i></p><p>With a discussion on using monies gathered from draft exemption payments to give bonuses when recruiting black troops in the South: <i>"as the government will continue to receive exemption money why should it not devote the sums which are likely to be thus gathered to bounties for soldiers white or black enlisting in the South. In that way the ranks could be kept full."</i></p><p>With reports on how the Southern planter aristocracy hates Lincoln and Johnson as running mate because both rose through the ranks of the <i>"common"</i> people.</p><p><b>Historical Background</b></p><p>The Boston-based New England Loyal Publication Society and the Loyal Publication Society of New York was founded in 1863 to bolster public support by disseminating pro-Union news articles and editorials to newspapers around the country. At first the two groups read newspapers to identify particularly useful articles and editorials and contact the editors to request that additional copies be printed. These items would then be distributed to Union soldiers or to newspapers. As the war progressed the societies began to write and publish their own broadsides.</p><p><b>Condition</b></p><p>Very good. Tape 1 inch on verso at horizontal fold some water stains visible mostly from back. Better than it sounds!</p> books‎

‎Philadelphia PA: Not Published 1862. Bill of lading & Entry of Merchandise form completed in manuscript. Dated 16 April 1862 for the Barque Irma H. Wortinger master sailing from Trinidad de Cuba. The goods were imported by S. Morris Waln & Co who brought in hogsheads and barrels of molasses all listed in the packages and contents section of the form. The quantities are calculated for customs duties and signed by the agents in charge in manuscript. The reverse with the District and Port of Philadelphia bill of lading affirmation printed information filled-in by the agent William H. Pile and affirmed by the Dep. Collector of the port with various other signatures noting duties paid on the blank panel at the bottom of the sheet. Form with a small woodcut sailing ship at upper left corner printed and sold by John C. Clark & Son 230 Dock Street Philadelphia. Approx. 11" x 16 3/4" size; old fold lines little nicks to the paper edges edge-soiling; in very good condition. Lewis issues a warning to the citizens of Winchester Virginia imploring them to submit to his occupation or face <i>"harsh measures."</i> This was the first official occupation of a town that would change hands nearly seventy times during the war. Union General Nathaniel Banks entered the Shenandoah Valley in March 1862 occupied Winchester on March 12 and defeated the Confederates at the battle of Kernstown on March 23. On May 25 Union forces were defeated by Stonewall Jackson at the first battle of Winchester and forced to withdraw from the town towards Harper's Ferry thus ending the first Federal occupation of Winchester.</p><p><b>Condition</b></p><p>Very good</p> books‎

‎Hunt Idaho: War Relocation Authority 1945. First Edition. Near Fine. A WRA memo to all staff members helping to prepare Minidoka's overall history. Two stapled long sheets folded in uneven thirds. Pointers and guide posts given by Project Director W. E. Rawlings and Acting Reports Officer Richard A. Niver in response to questions posed by various staff members regarding statistical-functional and personal narrative reports. The Minidoka War Relocation Center was formally closed on October 18 1945 and this memo dated November 1 1945. Together with a checklist for employees document detained families leaving Minidoka; one single sheet printed on recto only.<p><br /> <br /> The final days of Minidoka were "confusing and cumbersome" and some felt leaving was nearly as chaotic as arriving with camp officials hustling bewildered inmates onto trains. "Inmates also had to make their own travel arrangements. So-called "special" cars or coaches-essentially train cars that were reserved for Minidokans only-were sought after by both inmates and administration since they seemed to offer at least a degree of safety and comfort. But the scheduling of the "special" coaches was irregular and they sometimes were canceled at the last minute since troop movements always had first priority. Those leaving Minidoka took a bus to the Shoshone train station about twenty-seven miles away from which trains took them back to the West Coast or to destinations to the east. Especially in the last weeks of the camp various administrative staffers met inmates at Shoshone to help with last minute details and make sure everyone got on the train. Established in 1918 by Woodrow Wilson the campaign brought together seven organizations--the YMCA the YWCA the American Library Association the War Camp Community Service the Knights of Columbus the Jewish Welfare Board and the Salvation Army--to form a group fundraising effort with the hope of raising over $170 million for the war. The canvas banner depicts a red and white striped top hat on a blue background. The hat is full of dollar bills and coins symbolizing the collective fund that had been created and encouraging citizens to donate. The poster is in very good condition. Folds as issued. Page measures 30" x 20 1/4"<br/><br/> This World War I poster is part of a series published by the United War Work Campaign or UWWC a coalition of seven service organizations charged with raising $170000000 to help demobilize the army and maintain morale in the final few years of the war. The campaign was a success and was at the time recognized as the largest fundraising event in history. The War Camp Community Service was one of two secular organizations in the campaign. Their work was largely focused on the social and recreational needs of enlisted men in homefront training camps. This poster features the organization's emblem with an illustration of servicemen sharing a home cooked meal. The caption reads 'Home Hospitality'. Fine content A.L.S. 4to. 2 pages Appleton WI January 27 1863 providing news of troop movements and the firing and replacement of several Generals in part: ".I suppose Rosecrans Army is at Murfreesboro yet. You see they cashiered and dismissed Porter. They ought to do the same with Buell or shoot him. When such traitors are out of the Army we shall do better. I believe Rosecrans to be a true good officer. I understand he has dismissed a many good officers and I hope he will continue to do so until the last sympathizers are out of the Army. It is reported that Burnside has resigned and Hooker has taken his place. Hooker is not ably as good an officer as Burnside but it seems bad to be changing Commanders so much. Matters do not look encouraging yet I believe we shall succeed by and by." Condition: weak folds with minor fraying at the top margin that affects parts of two letters.
