The New Mobe was one of many student groups that advocated for resisting the draft during the Vietnam War. ‎THREE AUTOGRAPH LETTERS SIGNED by the U.S. Congressman from New York SAMUEL F. MILLER PENNED in the latter days of the Civil War addressed to STEPHEN HOLDEN two penned when Holden was a Lieutenent in the Civil War. Together with a RECEIPT SIGNED by SAMUEL F. MILLER as collector of Internal Revenue for moneys received from Stephen Holden as Deputy Collector plus a portrait of Captain Holden.‎

‎<p>April 25 1864 through October 26 1874. 1864-1874. 1864-1874. Very good. - The three Autograph Letters Signed by Congressman Samuel F. Miller and additional material consist of:</p><p>1. A 4-page letter dated April 25th 1864 penned on four sides of 7-7/8 inch high by 5 inch wide "United States of America Thirty Eighth Congress" stationery. Congressman Miller congratulates Lieutenant Holden for his "Honors". He states that the election of a Copperhead President "would be such a national calamity" and supports Lincoln in the upcoming election. He would however have "no objection to a more radical man or rather to Mr. Lincoln taking a more radical policy." Miller says he would like a list of men from the District who would like to receive "speeches or documents". He would be "grateful" for "any influence that you can bring "for his next election" and presumes "That the voice of the soldiers from the Dist would have a great influence at home." Signed "S.F. MIller". Folded for mailing with some darkening along the vertical center fold and minor foxing to the front edge of the first page. Very good.</p><p>2. A second letter this one 3 pages dated June 27 1864 penned on three sides of 8 inch high by 4-7/8 inch paper with an integral leaf. Congressman Miller writes to Lieutenant Holden regarding the Emolument Law which would provide African American soldiers fighting for the Union with the same equipment benefits and pay as other soldiers "We have had a great excitement in the house over the amendment of the Emolument Law. There have been a large number of propositions brought forward & voted down. Lately Smithers of Delaware introduced a bill in the way of a substitute that only lacked two votes of passing - if it can be brought up again on motion to reconsider I think it will pass this morning. The bill struck out the communication clause. I suppose the army will not find fault with this but I expect a howl at home. Yet the bill I think is as well drawn as can well be to sugarcoat the bitter pill." Miller pens his close and signs vertically along the left border of the first page "S.F. Miller". Folded vertically and horizontally with some darkening along the vertical fold and slight minor foxing. Very good.</p><p>3. The war has ended and between these 2 letters and the last former Congressman Samuel F. Miller now holds office as Collector of Internal Revenue for the 19th District of New York with Stephen Holden as Deputy Collector. A 4-1/4 inch high by 7-1/2 receipt dated August 25th 1869 for the sum of $78.75 received from Deputy Collector Stephen Holden and signed "S.F. Miller" as Collector of Internal Revenue. Additionally endorsed with Miller's name and the date on the verso. Apparently once mounted with remnants of an article adhering to the verso the receipt is folded horizontally with some minor soiling or foxing. Very good.</p><p>4. An autograph letter signed by Samuel F. Miller dated October 26 1874 and penned on 9-3/4 inch high by 7-5/8 inch wide paper is again addressed to Stephen Holden. Referring to his upcoming Congressional race Miller thanks Holden for his interest and trusts "that you will be able to secure me all the votes that belong to us in Shelbourne & Columbus." He mentions that he has received the support of the Temperance party in Afton NY. Signed "S.F. Miller". Additionally endorsed with Miller's name and the dates "Oct. 27 1874 And Oct. 28" on the verso. Folded vertically and horizontally with some minor foxing to the edges and an indentation at top left. Apparently once mounted with remnants of paper adhering to the verso. Very good.</p><p>5. A 2-3/8 inch high by 1-3/4 inch wide portrait of "Capt. Stephen Holden / Washington 1865" printed on a 9-1/2 inch high by 6-1/4 inch wide page removed from a publication. The top left corner is stained and there is a hole to the top right corner with a chip out from the front edge. Good.</p><p>The law equalizing the pay of Black Soldiers was passed on June 18th 1865. Section 2 of the law reads: "And be it further enacted That all persons of color who have been or may be mustered into the military service of the United States shall received the same uniforms clothing arms equipment camp equipage rations medical and hospital attendance pay and emoluments other than bounty as other soldiers of the regular or volunteer forces of the United States."</p><p>Not to be confused with the Supreme Court Justice the U.S. Congressman from New York Samuel Franklin Miller 1827-1892 initially served as a member of the New York State Assembly and as a colonel in the State militia. He was elected as a Republican to the 38th Congress of the United States serving from 1863 to 1865 and subsequently served as a member of the State Constitutional Convention in 1867. FIRST EDITION OF THIS IMPORTANT WORK ON THE FIRST WORLD WAR AND AMERICA'S ROLE IN THE CONFLICT. As Secretary of War Baker presided over the American military participation in the First World War in 1917 and 1918 including the creation of a nationwide military draft. Baker selected Gen. John J. Pershing to head the American Expeditionary Forces. At Baker's insistence Wilson made the American forces an independent fighting partner of the Allies against the Central Powers rather than letting American troops be used to replenish British and French forces as those nations advised.<br> On December 15 1917 a War Council was formed as distinct from the Council of National Defense consisting of the Secretary of War his Assistant the Chief of Staff of the United States Army the Quartermaster General of the United States Army the Chief of Ordnance and possibly others.16 The War Council was to oversee and coordinate all matters of supply and to plan for the effective use of the military power of the nation. <br> At the 1924 Democratic National Convention he delivered a speech that was the highlight of the convention "political oratory at its peak" according to an exhaustive account of the convention: "According to reporters men and women everywhere burst into tears. Wassif Bey was a ship commander of Hamidiye cruiser before Rauf Orbay. 27x21 cm. In German. 1 p. "Kommando der Flotte" letterhead with bilingual in German and Ottoman Turkish. 8 lines. Signed 'Souchon'. This letter includes an indication that it honors the Kaiser Wilhelm II with the Iron Cross medal for Commander of Haamidiye Wassif Bey. "Seine Majestät der Kaiser und König haben Euer Hochwohlgeboren in Anbetracht Ihrer tatkraftigen Arbeit im Interesse der Kriegsbereitschaft und Kriegsbereitschaft und Kriegsbedürfnisse der Marine das Eiserne Kreuz 2. Klasse zu verleihen geruht.". i.e. His Majesty the Emperor and King have deigned your High Wellbeing to give the Iron Cross 2nd Class to the Navy in view of your hard work in the interest of readiness for war needs. Wilhelm Anton Souchon was a German admiral in World War I. Souchon commanded the Kaiserliche Marine's Mediterranean squadron in the early days of the war. His initiative played a major part in the entry of the Ottoman Empire into World War I. Wilhelm Anton Souchon was born on 2 June 1864 in Germany to a family of Huguenot ancestry. In July 1914 hostilities erupted between the Austro-Hungarian Empire and the Kingdom of Serbia. Rear Admiral Souchon a native of Leipzig feared being trapped in the Adriatic Sea in the event of other nations joining in the conflict. Because of this Souchon took his two ships the battlecruiser Goeben and the light cruiser Breslau into the western Mediterranean. When World War I began on 4 August 1914 he bombarded the French-Algerian ports of Bône and Philippeville. He successfully eluded British attempts to corner him see Pursuit of Goeben and Breslau and on 10 August 1914 his small squadron arrived at the Dardanelles. After two days of negotiations he was allowed to take his ships to Istanbul where they were subsequently transferred officially into the Ottoman Navy. Souchon was appointed Commander-in-chief of the Ottoman Navy and served in this position until September 1917. This gesture by Germany had an enormously positive impact with the Turkish population. At the outbreak of the war Winston Churchill caused outrage when he "requisitioned" without compensation two almost completed Turkish battleships in British shipyards Sultan Osman I and Reshadieh that had been financed by public subscription. These ships were commissioned into the Royal Navy as Agincourt and Erin respectively. On 15 August 1914 in the aftermath of Souchon's daring dash to Constantinople Turkey cancelled their maritime agreement with Britain and the Royal Navy mission under Admiral Limpus and left by 15 September. The Dardanelles were fortified with German assistance and the Bosporus was secured by the presence of Goeben now Yavuz Sultan Selim. On 27 September 1914 the Straits were officially closed to all international shipping. On 29 October 1914 Souchon's fleet launched the Black Sea Raid a naval attack which brought the Ottoman Empire into World War I. His ships laid several sea minefields and shelled the Russian Black Sea ports of Sevastopol Odessa and others destroying the Russian minesweeper Prut in the process. British naval units quickly retaliated on Turkish merchant ships off Izmir Smyrna. On 2 November 1914 Russia declared war on the Ottoman Empire. On 5 November Britain followed suit and on 12 November 1914 the Ottoman government officially declared war on the Triple Entente. For the next three years Souchon attempted to reform the Ottoman Navy while conducting a number of raids on Russian shipping ports and coastal installations in the Black Sea. Promoted to vice admiral Souchon was awarded the Pour le Mérite Germany's highest military order on 29 October 1916. In September 1917 Souchon returned to Germany.
