‎Saturn The Ringed Giant NASA Photograph Title from verso side; 260-106 A.‎

‎Pasadena CA: NASA Aeronautics and Space Administration Jet Propulsion Laboratory c1979. Presumed First Edition First printing. This is one of multiple originals issued. Single sheet printed on both sides. Very good. The format is approximately 8 inches by 1 inches. This is a single sheet with imagery on side and text on the other in a plastic sleeve. On the front side is a large color composite photograph of the ringed planet Saturn and Earth to the same scale. This photo of Saturn was taken with a telescope and represents one of the best images ever taken from the planet. The text discussed the difficulties of photographing Saturn from Earth and looked forward to images from spacecraft expected from Voyager 1 in 1980 and Voyager 2 in 1981. The observation and exploration of Saturn can be divided into three phases: 1 pre-modern observations with the naked eye 2 telescopic observations from Earth beginning in the 17th century and 3 visitation by space probes in orbit or on flyby. In the 21st century telescopic observations continue from Earth including Earth-orbiting observatories like the Hubble Space Telescope and from the Cassini orbiter. Pioneer 11 made the first flyby of Saturn in September 1979 when it passed within 12000 miles of the planet's cloud tops. Images were taken of the planet and a few of its moons although their resolution was too low to discern surface detail. The spacecraft also studied Saturn's rings revealing the thin F-ring and the fact that dark gaps in the rings are bright when viewed at a high phase angle towards the Sun meaning that they contain fine light-scattering material. In addition Pioneer 11 measured the temperature of Titan. In November 1980 the Voyager 1 probe visited the Saturn system. It sent back the first high-resolution images of the planet its rings and satellites. Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and the second-largest in the Solar System after Jupiter. It is a gas giant with an average radius of about nine-and-a-half times that of Earth. It has only one-eighth the average density of Earth but is over 95 times more massive. Even though Saturn is nearly the size of Jupiter Saturn has less than one-third of Jupiter's mass. Saturn orbits the Sun at a distance of 9.59 AU with an orbital period of 29.45 years. Saturn's interior is thought to be composed of a rocky core surrounded by a deep layer of metallic hydrogen an intermediate layer of liquid hydrogen and liquid helium and finally a gaseous outer layer. Saturn has a pale yellow hue due to ammonia crystals in its upper atmosphere. An electrical current within the metallic hydrogen layer is thought to give rise to Saturn's planetary magnetic field which is weaker than Earth's but which has a magnetic moment 580 times that of Earth due to Saturn's larger size. Saturn's magnetic field strength is around one-twentieth of Jupiter's. The outer atmosphere is generally bland and lacking in contrast although long-lived features can appear. Wind speeds on Saturn can reach 1100 miles per hour. The planet has a bright and extensive ring system composed mainly of ice particles with a smaller amount of rocky debris and dust. At least 146 moons are known to orbit the planet of which 63 are officially named; this does not include the hundreds of moonlets in its rings. Titan Saturn's largest moon and the second largest in the Solar System is larger while less massive than the planet Mercury and is the only moon in the Solar System to have a substantial atmosphere. ‎Chariots for Apollo: A History of Manned Lunar Spacecraft The NASA History Series NASA SP-4205‎

Apollo was America's program to land men on the moon and get them safely back to the earth. In May 1961 President Kennedy gave the signal for planning and developing the machines to take men to that body. This decision although bold and startling at the time was not made at random nor did it lack a sound engineering base. Subcommittees of the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics NACA predecessor of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration NASA had regularly surveyed aeronautical needs and pointed out problems for immediate resolution and specific areas for advanced research. After NASA's creation in October 1958 its leaders many of them former NACA officials continued to operate in this fashion and less than a year later set up a group to study what the agency should do in nearearth and deepspace exploration. Among the items listed by that group was a lunar landing a proposal also discussed in circles outside NASA as a means for achieving and demonstrating technological supremacy in space. From the time Russia launched its first Sputnik in October 1957 many Americans had viewed the moon as a logical goal. A two-nation space race subsequently made that destination America's national objective for the 1960s. America had a program Project Mercury to put man in low-earth orbit and recover him safely. In July 1960 NASA announced plans to follow Mercury with a program later named Apollo to fly men around the moon. Soon thereafter several industrial firms were awarded contracts to study the feasibility of such an enterprise. The companies had scarcely finished this task when the Russians scored again orbiting the first space traveler Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on 12 April 1961. Three weeks later the Americans succeeded in launching Astronaut Alan Shepard into a suborbital arc. These events and other pressures to get America moving provided the popular political and technological foundations upon which President Kennedy could base his appeal for support from the Congress and the American people for the Apollo program. The Apollo story has many pieces: How and why did it start What made it work What did it accomplish What did it mean Some of its visible and some not so visible parts the launch vehicles special facilities administration Skylab program ApolloSoyuz Test Project as examples have been recorded by the NASA History Office and some have not. A single volume treating all aspects of Apollo whatever they were must await the passage of time to permit a fair perspective. At that later date this manuscript may seem narrow in scope and perhaps it is. But among present readers particularly those who were Apollo program participants there are some who argue that the text is too broad and that their specialties receive short shrift. Moreover some top NASA leaders during Apollo's times contend perhaps rightly that the authors were not familiar with all the nuances of some of the accounts set down here. Chariots for Apollo: A History of Manned Lunar Spacecraft begins with the creation of NASA itself and with the definition of a manned space flight program to follow Mercury. It ends with Apollo 11 when America attained its goal of the 1960s landing the first men on the moon and returning them to the earth. The focal points of this story are the spacecraft the command and service modules and the lunar module. NASA SP 4205 NASA paperback‎

‎1981-1999 Space Shuttle Mission Chronology‎

‎John F Kennedy Space Center: National Aeronautics and Space Administration 2000. Presumed First Edition First printing. Staplebound. Very good. The format is approximately 8.5 inches by 11 inches. 63 5 pages includes covers. Illustrated front cover. The format is approximately 8.25 inches by 11 inches. Illustrations. This includes information on STS-1 through STS 103 from 1981 to 1999. Not all numbers were reported on. The write-ups include mission highlights EVAs Launch and Landing. This includes information on John Glenn's return to space and the first flight to the International Space Station. The International Space Station ISS is the largest modular space station in low Earth orbit. The project involves five space agencies: the United States' NASA Russia's Roscosmos Japan's JAXA Europe's ESA and Canada's CSA. The ownership and use of the space station is established by intergovernmental treaties and agreements. The station serves as a microgravity and space environment research laboratory in which scientific research is conducted in astrobiology astronomy meteorology physics and other fields. The ISS is suited for testing the spacecraft systems and equipment required for possible future long-duration missions to the Moon and Mars. The Space Shuttle was a partially reusable low Earth orbital spacecraft system operated from 1981 to 2011 by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration NASA as part of the Space Shuttle program. Its official program name was Space Transportation System STS taken from a 1969 plan for a system of reusable spacecraft where it was the only item funded for development. The first of four orbital test flights occurred in 1981 leading to operational flights beginning in 1982. Five complete Space Shuttle orbiter vehicles were built and flown on a total of 135 missions from 1981 to 2011 launched from the Kennedy Space Center KSC in Florida. Operational missions launched numerous satellites interplanetary probes and the Hubble Space Telescope HST conducted science experiments in orbit participated in the Shuttle-Mir program with Russia and participated in construction and servicing of the International Space Station ISS. The Space Shuttle fleet's total mission time was 1322 days 19 hours 21 minutes and 23 seconds. Space Shuttle components include the Orbiter Vehicle OV with three clustered Rocketdyne RS-25 main engines a pair of recoverable solid rocket boosters SRBs and the expendable external tank ET containing liquid hydrogen and liquid oxygen. The Space Shuttle was launched vertically like a conventional rocket with the two SRBs operating in parallel with the orbiter's three main engines which were fueled from the ET. The SRBs were jettisoned before the vehicle reached orbit while the main engines continued to operate and the ET was jettisoned after main engine cutoff and just before orbit insertion which used the orbiter's two Orbital Maneuvering System OMS engines. At the conclusion of the mission the orbiter fired its OMS to deorbit and reenter the atmosphere. The orbiter was protected during reentry by its thermal protection system tiles and it glided as a spaceplane to a runway landing usually to the Shuttle Landing Facility at KSC Florida or to Rogers Dry Lake in Edwards Air Force Base California. If the landing occurred at Edwards the orbiter was flown back to the KSC atop the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft a specially modified Boeing 747. The first orbiter Enterprise was built in 1976 and used in Approach and Landing Tests but had no orbital capability. Four fully operational orbiters were initially built: Columbia Challenger Discovery and Atlantis. Of these two were lost in mission accidents: Challenger in 1986 and Columbia in 2003 with a total of 14 astronauts killed. A fifth operational and sixth in total orbiter Endeavour was built in 1991 to replace Challenger. The Space Shuttle was retired from service following Atlantis's final flight on July 21 2011. ‎2006 Near-Earth Object Survey and Deflection Study; NP-2007-020460-HQ‎

‎Washington DC: National Aeronautics and Space Administration 2007. Final Report--Presumed first edition first printing. Wraps. Very good. Format is approximately 8.5 inches by 11 inches. 272 pages. Illustrated front and back cover. Illustrations mostly in color. Definition of Terms. References. Appendices. Minor cover wear noted. NASA letter of appreciation to a senior National Nuclear Security Administration technical expert for support to this report. In the 2005 Budget Authorization Act the U.S. Congress directed the NASA Administrator to provide an analysis of alternatives to detect track catalogue and characterize potentially hazardous near-Earth objects NEO. Congress required that the Administrator submit a program by December 28 2006 to survey 90% of the potentially hazardous objects measuring at least 140 meters in diameter by the end of 2020. In addition the legislation required the Administrator to submit an analysis of alternatives that NASA could employ to divert an object on a likely collision course with Earth. A study team led by the Office of Program Analysis and Evaluation PA&E derived requirements and figures of merit from the Act and used these factors to evaluate the alternatives. The team developed a range of options from public and private sources and then analyzed their capabilities levels of performance life-cycle costs schedules and development and operations risks. This document presents the detailed results of these analyses. A summary report was submitted to Congress in December of 2006. During related Congressional testimony on this report it was stated that The report's basic conclusion is that ``NASA recommends that the program continue as currently planned and we will also take advantage of opportunities using potential dual-use telescopes and spacecraft--and partner with other agencies as feasible--to attempt to achieve the legislated goal within 15 years. However due to current budget constraints NASA cannot initiate a new program at this time.'' In addition the report contained a number of additional findings <br /> including: ``The goal of the Survey Program should be modified to detect track catalogue and characterize by the end of 2020 90 percent of all Potentially Hazardous Objects PHOs greater than 140m whose orbits pass within 0.05 AU of the Earth's orbit as opposed to surveying for all NEOs; The Agency could achieve the specified goal of surveying for 90 percent of the potentially hazardous NEOs by the end of 2020 by partnering with other government agencies on potential future optical ground-based observatories and building a dedicated NEO survey asset assuming the partners' potential ground assets come online by 2010 and 2014 and a dedicated asset by 2015; Together the two observatories potentially to be developed by other government agencies could complete 83 percent of the survey by 2020 if observing time at these observatories is shared with NASA's NEO Survey Program; New space-based infrared systems combined with ground-based assets could reduce the overall time to reach the 90 percent goal by at least three years. Space systems have additional benefits as well as costs and risks compared to ground-based alternatives; Radar systems cannot contribute to the search for potentially hazardous objects but may be used to rapidly refine tracking and to determine object sizes for a few NEOs of potentially high interest. Existing radar systems are currently oversubscribed by other missions. Determining a NEO's mass and orbit is required to determine whether it represents a potential threat and to provide required information for most alternatives to mitigate such a threat. Beyond these parameters characterization requirements and capabilities are tied directly to the mitigation strategy selected.''. National Aeronautics and Space Administration paperback‎
