The inner text portion states This medallion contains metal flown on a Space Shuttle Mission. The reverse side has an outer ring of text that states: Columbia Challenger Discovery Atlantis Endeavour Mission Complete. The center section is divided into three sections: one depicts the take off of the launch vehicle with orbiter attached; one depicts the orbiter in space with the bay open a satellite deployed and the curve of the earth visible; the final depicts the shuttle landing with parachute deployed. Official NASA Mission Complete Medallion in Antique Bronze contains flown metal material! This official Mission Complete Medallion is 1.75" and commemorates the historic completion of the Space Shuttle Program. In addition this limited edition medallion commemorates the exceptional accomplishments and missions of the first winged-spacecrafts. Minted with the same Shuttle flown ingots included in the NASA Award Medallions this medallion is the second in the series and is also worthy of the program it represents. The official Space Shuttle Program Commemorative Design will be embedded in full color on one side while the other side will dimensionally render a Space Shuttle at work through a launch space mission and landing. These medallions will be plated in Antique Bronze and protected within circular presentation cases with high-density black foam spacers. The Space Shuttle Program was from 1981 to 2011. This design is by Blake Dumesnil. MR. Dumesnil is a senior art director and graphic designer at NASA's Johnson Space Center JSC. Much of the work he does supports the JSC Engineering and Science Directorate as well as the Jacobs-JETS contract. His design work includes all forms of visual presentation and marketing materials used to convey what expertise resources technologies and innovations at JSC in hopes of bringing in new forms of work from a variety of industries. Names of the astronauts ring the image of the Space Shuttle and a piece of space equipment. STS-92 was a Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station ISS flown by Space Shuttle Discovery. STS-92 marked the 100th mission of the Space Shuttle. It was launched from Kennedy Space Center Florida 11 October 2000. STS-92 was an ISS assembly flight that brought the Z1 truss Control Moment Gyros Pressurized Mating Adapter-3 PMA-3 mounted on a Spacelab pallet and two DDCU Heat pipes to the space station. The Z1 truss was the first exterior framework installed on the ISS and allowed the first U.S. solar arrays to be temporarily installed on Unity for early power during flight 4A. The Ku-band communication system supported early science capabilities and U.S. television on flight 6A. The CMGs Control Moment Gyros weigh about 27 kilograms 60 lb and provide non-propulsive electrically powered attitude control when activated on flight 5A and PMA-3 provides shuttle docking port for solar array installation on flight 4A and Lab installation on flight 5A. The mission included seven days of docked operations with the space station four EVAs and two ingress opportunities. Over the course of four scheduled spacewalks two teams of space walkers and an experienced robot arm operator collaborated to install the Z1 Z for zenith port truss structure on top of the U.S. Unity connecting node on the growing station and to deliver the third Pressurized Mating Adapter PMA 3 to the ISS for the future berthing of new station components and to accommodate shuttle dockings. The Z1 truss was the first permanent lattice-work structure for the ISS very much like a girder setting the stage for the future addition of the station's major trusses or backbones. The Z1 fixture also served as the platform on which the huge U.S. solar arrays were mounted on the next shuttle assembly flight STS-97. The Z1 contains four large gyroscopic devices called Control Moment Gyroscope CMGs which are used to maneuver the space station into the proper orientation on orbit once they were activated following the installation of the U.S. laboratory. During the fourth spacewalk astronauts Wisoff and López-AlegrÃa tested the SAFER jet backpack flying up to 50 feet while remaining tethered to the spacecraft. The format is 4.5 inches by 4.5 inches. The design is one square offset over a square of equal size making an eight-pointed 'star'. The base square has the number 122 in the upper left corner the alphanumeric 1E in the upper right corner and part of a graphic design in the lower two corners that blend into the graphic on the main square. The square has an image of the earth and one of a figure of a sailing ship 'morphing' into the space shuttle One the four sides are the crew names of Eyharts o Frick o Poindexter o Walheim o Melvin o Schelgel o Love. On the reverse there is text which reads STS-122 Patch Description The primary objective of the STS-122 mission is to install and outfit the European Space Agency's Columbus laboratory module. Atlantis will rendezvous and dock with the International Space Station ISS on flight day three and Leopold Eyharts will official become a member of the ISS crew replacing Dan Tani who will return to Earth as part of the STS-122 crew. The crew will conduct three spacewalks to prepare the Columbus module and replace a nitrogen tank on the station. The STS-122 patch depicts the continuation of the voyages of early explorers to today's frontier: space. The ship denotes the travels of the early expeditions from the East to the West. The shuttle shows the continuation of that journey along the orbital patch from west to east. A little more than 500 years after Columbus sailed to the new world the STS-122 crew will bring the European laboratory module ":Columbus" to the ISS to usher in a new ear of scientific discovery. NASA and Space Flight Awareness logos. STS-122 was a NASA Space Shuttle mission to the International Space Station ISS flown by the Space Shuttle Atlantis. STS-122 marked the 24th shuttle mission to the ISS and the 121st Space Shuttle flight overall. The mission was also referred to as ISS-1E by the ISS program. The primary objective of STS-122 was to deliver the European Columbus science laboratory built by the European Space Agency ESA to the station. It also returned Expedition 16 Flight Engineer Daniel M. Tani to Earth. Tani was replaced on Expedition 16 by Léopold Eyharts a French Flight Engineer representing ESA. After Atlantis landing the orbiter was prepared for STS-125 the final servicing mission for the Hubble Space Telescope. The original target launch date for STS-122 was December 6 2007 but due to engine cutoff sensor ECO reading errors the launch was postponed to December 9 2007. During the second launch attempt the sensors failed again and the launch was halted. A tanking test on December 18 2007 revealed the probable cause to lie with a connector between the external tank and the shuttle. The connector was replaced and the shuttle launched during the third attempt on February 7 2008. Columbus is a science laboratory that is part of the International Space Station ISS and is the largest single contribution to the ISS made by the European Space Agency ESA. Like the Harmony and Tranquility modules the Columbus laboratory was constructed in Turin Italy by Thales Alenia Space. The functional equipment and software of the lab was designed by EADS in Bremen Germany. It was also integrated in Bremen before being flown to the Kennedy Space Center KSC in Florida in an Airbus Beluga. It was launched aboard Space Shuttle Atlantis on 7 February 2008 on flight STS-122. It is designed for ten years of operation. The module is controlled by the Columbus Control Centre located at the German Space Operations Center part of the German Aerospace Center in Oberpfaffenhofen near Munich Germany. The European Space Agency has spent €1.4 billion about US$2 billion on building Columbus including the experiments it carries and the ground control infrastructure necessary to operate them. When this picture was taken the spacecraft was already 10000 nautical miles away from the Moon. On board Apollo 11 were Commander Neil Armstrong Command Module Pilot Michael Collins and Lunar Module Pilot Buss Aldrin. Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that landed the first two humans on the Moon. Mission commander Neil Armstrong and pilot Buzz Aldrin both American landed the lunar module Eagle on July 20 1969 at 20:18 UTC. Armstrong became the first to step onto the lunar surface six hours after landing on July 21 at 02:56:15 UTC; Aldrin joined him about 20 minutes later. They spent about two and a quarter hours together outside the spacecraft and collected 47.5 pounds 21.5 kg of lunar material to bring back to Earth. Michael Collins piloted the command module Columbia in lunar orbit while they were on the Moon's surface. Armstrong and Aldrin spent just under a day on the lunar surface before rejoining Columbia in lunar orbit. The Apollo program also known as Project Apollo was the third United States human spaceflight program carried out by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration NASA which accomplished landing the first humans on the Moon from 1969 to 1972. First conceived during Dwight D. Eisenhower's administration as a three-man spacecraft to follow the one-man Project Mercury which put the first Americans in space Apollo was later dedicated to President John F. Kennedy's national goal of "landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth" by the end of the 1960s which he proposed in an address to Congress on May 25 1961. Kennedy's goal was accomplished on the Apollo 11 mission when astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed their Lunar Module LM on July 20 1969 and walked on the lunar surface while Michael Collins remained in lunar orbit in the Command/Service Module CSM and all three landed safely on Earth on July 24. Five subsequent Apollo missions also landed astronauts on the Moon the last in December 1972. In these six spaceflights twelve men walked on the Moon. Apollo ran from 1961 to 1972 with the first manned flight in 1968. It achieved its goal of manned lunar landing despite the major setback of a 1967 Apollo 1 cabin fire that killed the entire crew during a prelaunch test. After the first landing sufficient flight hardware remained for nine follow-on landings with a plan for extended lunar geological and astrophysical exploration. Budget cuts forced the cancellation of three of these. Five of the remaining six missions achieved successful landings but the Apollo 13 landing was prevented by an oxygen tank explosion in transit to the Moon which damaged the CSM's propulsion and life support. The crew returned to Earth safely by using the Lunar Module as a "lifeboat" for these functions. Apollo used Saturn family rockets as launch vehicles which were also used for an Apollo Applications Program which consisted of Skylab a space station that supported three manned missions in 1973-74 and the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project a joint Earth orbit mission with the Soviet Union in 1975. Apollo set several major human spaceflight milestones. It stands alone in sending manned missions beyond low Earth orbit. Apollo 8 was the first manned spacecraft to orbit another celestial body while the final Apollo 17 mission marked the sixth Moon landing and the ninth manned mission beyond low Earth orbit. The program returned 842 pounds 382 kg of lunar rocks and soil to Earth greatly contributing to the understanding of the Moon's composition and geological history. The program laid the foundation for NASA's subsequent human spaceflight capability and funded construction of its Johnson Space Center and Kennedy Space Center. Apollo also spurred advances in many areas of technology incidental to rocketry and manned spaceflight including avionics telecommunications and computers. STS-51-F also known as Spacelab 2 was the 19th flight of NASA's Space Shuttle program and the eighth flight of Space Shuttle Challenger. It launched from Kennedy Space Center Florida on 29 July 1985 and landed just under eight days later on 6 August 1985. While STS-51-F's primary payload was the Spacelab 2 laboratory module the payload that received the most publicity was the Carbonated Beverage Dispenser Evaluation which was an experiment in which both Coca-Cola and Pepsi tried to make their carbonated drinks available to astronauts. A helium-cooled infrared telescope IRT was also flown on this mission and while it did have some problems it observed 60% of the galactic plane in infrared light. During launch Challenger experienced multiple sensor failures in its center RS-25 engine which led to it shutting down and the shuttle had to perform an "Abort to Orbit" ATO emergency procedure. It is the only Shuttle mission to have carried out an abort after launching. The mission was carried out at a lower orbital altitude. The main objective was to verify performance of Spacelab systems determine the interface capability of the orbiter and measure the environment created by the spacecraft. Experiments covered life sciences physics astronomy high-energy astrophysics solar physics atmospheric physics and technology. The flight marked the first time the European Space Agency Instrument Pointing System was tested in orbit. The George C. Marshall Space Flight Center MSFC located in Huntsville Alabama is the U.S. government's civilian rocketry and spacecraft propulsion research center. As the largest NASA center MSFC's first mission was developing the Saturn launch vehicles for the Apollo program. Marshall has been the lead center for the Space Shuttle main propulsion and external tank; payloads and related crew training; International Space Station ISS design and assembly; computers networks and information management; and the Space Launch System SLS. Located on the Redstone Arsenal near Huntsville MSFC is named in honor of General of the Army George C. Marshall. The center contains the Huntsville Operations Support Center HOSC also known as the International Space Station Payload Operations Center. This facility supports ISS launch payload and experiment activities at the Kennedy Space Center. The HOSC also monitors rocket launches from Cape Canaveral Space Force Station when a Marshall Center payload is on board. In addition to the pallet experiments flown on the Space Shuttle many other experiments were performed onboard Spacelab. This was a reusable laboratory consisting of multiple components including a pressurized module an unpressurized carrier and other related hardware. Under a program overseen by MSFC ten Europeans nations jointly designed built and financed the first Spacelab through the European Space Research Organisation ESRO. In addition Japan funded a Spacelab for STS-47 a dedicated mission. Over a 15-year period Spacelab components flew on 22 shuttle missions the last in April 1998. In early 1990 MSFC's Spacelab Mission Operations Control Center was formed to control all Spacelab missions replacing the Payload Operations Control Center formerly situated at the JSC from which previous Spacelab missions were operated. Apollo 14 was the eighth manned mission in the United States Apollo program and the third to land on the Moon. It was the last of the "H missions" targeted landings with two-day stays on the Moon with two lunar EVAs or moonwalks. Commander Alan Shepard Command Module Pilot Stuart Roosa and Lunar Module Pilot Edgar Mitchell launched on their nine-day mission on Sunday January 31 1971. Shepard and Mitchell made their lunar landing on February 5 in the Fra Mauro formation - originally the target of the aborted Apollo 13 mission. 94.35 pounds of Moon rocks were collected and several scientific experiments were performed. Shepard and Mitchell spent 33½ hours on the Moon with almost 9½ hours of EVA. In the aftermath of Apollo 13 several modifications had been made to the Service Module electrical power system to prevent a repeat of that accident including a redesign of the oxygen tanks and the addition of a third tank. Shepard and Mitchell named their landing site Fra Mauro Base and this designation is recognized by the International Astronomical Union depicted in Latin on lunar maps as Station Fra Mauro. Shepard's first words after stepping onto the lunar surface were "And it's been a long way but we're here." Shepard's moonwalking suit was the first to utilize red stripes on the arms and legs and on the top of the lunar EVA sunshade "hood" so as to allow easy identification between the commander and LM pilot on the surface; on the Apollo 12 pictures it had been almost impossible to distinguish between the two crewmen causing a great deal of confusion. This feature was included on Jim Lovell's Apollo 13 suit; because no landing was made on that mission Apollo 14 was the first to make use of it. This feature was used for the remaining Apollo missions and for the EVAs of Space Shuttle flights and it is still in use today on both the U.S. and Russian space suits on the International Space Station.
