The only known copy of this founding document of communism, the final stepping stone towards the Communist Manifesto. The eight-page leaflet is a circular addressed to the “Bund der Kommunisten” (“Communist League”) by the participants of its second and final congress. The League, a revolutionary, socialist secret society, had been formed but a few months previously as a successor to the “Bund der Gerechten” (the “League of the Just”). The pioneering new name was adopted under the guidance of its new members Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels at the League’s first congress, held in London from June 2 through 9, 1847. Their ideas re-framed the League as an international organization with a coherent programme. Although the League would be formally disbanded in 1852, it is considered the precursor of the International Workingmen’s Association, the first Marxist political party, and the nucleus of all later communist parties. - The League’s second congress was held in Brussels from November 29 to December 8, half a year after the first. On both occasions the respective accounts were published under the heading "Der Congreß an den Bund": the former on June 9 and the present, latter one on December 15 (“1848” being a misprint for 1847). No copies of either of these two publications are recorded in library catalogues or in the usual bibliographical reference works. Only one or two copies of the circular of the First Congress are known: one in the estate of the Hamburg socialist and “Bund” member Joachim Friedrich Martens (SUB Hamburg, acquired in 1912); the other, apparently, in the Stiftung Archiv der Parteien und Massenorganisationen der DDR im Bundesarchiv (formerly in the Institut für Marxismus-Leninismus beim Zentralkomitee der SED, but not currently listed in the SAPMO’s catalogues). While this first circular was republished in 1969 (in Bert Andréas’s collection "Gründungsdokumente des Bundes der Kommunisten"), the present circular of the Second Congress has so far remained unknown to scholarship. As the Bund was still a secret society, the first circular was pseudonymously signed “Heide (Sekretär)” and “Karl Schill (Präsident)”, standing for Wilhelm Wolff and Karl Schapper, respectively. While the name of Schapper, the president, is given undisguised in the present second circular, it may therefore be more than a simple typographical error that the secretary’s name is here rendered as “J. Engels”. - In his article "On the History of the Communist League", written and published in 1885, nearly four decades after the event, Engels provides what has become the received version of the genesis of the Communist Manifesto: “[at the Second Congress Marx] expounded the new theory in a fairly long debate [...] All contradiction and doubt were finally set at rest, the new basic principles were unanimously adopted, and Marx and I were commissioned to draw up the Manifesto”. It is reasonable that Engels’s account should be a retrospective condensation of a more complicated process, albeit one of which few contemporary documents have survived. Interestingly, the use of the term "Manifest der kommunistischen Partei" is not entirely consistent throughout the circular: it is stated that a work so titled, which was to replace the "Communist Creed" passed at the First Congress, had already been compiled, drafted, translated into various languages, and even enacted (p. 1 f.), but had yet to be published. Also, it was decided at the Congress that such a "Manifesto" should appear annually in various languages (p. 7). The "Manifesto" of 1847 is said to have been drafted by taking into account all suggestions submitted by members of the League (p. 7); it is also said already to have given the Communist movement its proper expression (p. 2). The present circular as here published is referred to as the "organ of the League in its new appearance" (p. 8), and the forthcoming issue thereof is promised to contain the text of the Manifesto, which all subscribers are asked to disseminate as widely as possible, as it is to embody a brief summary of the Party’s position and will serve as a guideline to the Party’s propaganda, proving to the world that the communists are aware of their own position, as of those of all other proletarian parties (p. 8). - These passages shed new light on the development of the famous text, fleshing out Engels’s compressed narrative. And yet his account remains fundamentally accurate: at the Second Congress Marx took on the assignment to develop the Communist Manifesto into a publishable text, working from whatever sources or previous drafts he may have had, and together with Engels completed the task within several weeks. This December 15 publication, giving the final account of the plans and decisions of the League before the publication of the "Manifest der Kommunistischen Partei" two months later, just in time for the February Revolution of 1848, must be regarded as a founding document of Communism, recording the very moment when the great motor of the Manifesto was ignited. - It is very likely that this circular, the only known specimen in the world, was originally in the collection of a revolutionary who was - at least for a time - close to Marx: previously bound up with a collection of pamphlets apparently assembled by a German radical democrat in English exile (arguably Karl Blind, 1826-1907), including a first edition of "Herr Vogt" with Marx’s autograph corrections, it was removed from this volume for conservational reasons and is now stored within an acid-free portfolio. Not in Rubel, Stammhammer, Erstdrucke Marx Engels etc. No copies recorded in OCLC or KVK. Not in the 700-page catalogue of the books owned by Marx and Engels published in MEGA.

First edition of Engels' first book, written in his early twenties, with a three-page preface in English addressed "to the working classes of Great-Britain". Based on personal knowledge of the situation in Britain gained during the time he spent in 1842-43 at his father's factory in Salford, Engels exposed the horrific living conditions which the Industrial Revolution had entailed for workers in large industrial cities such as Manchester and Liverpool: mortality from disease was four times that in the surrounding countryside, and mortality from convulsions was ten times as high. Originally addressed to a German audience, the book is considered a classic account of the universal condition of the industrial working class during its time. It was not translated into English until 1887, as "The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844". - "Our image of Manchester capitalism, with the owners of the means of production enjoying their life unfettered by legal, organisational or moral restraints, is based on these descriptions by Engels" (cf. Bönig, p. 13). His book "made a crucial contribution [to the workers' self-empowerment] because it provided so detailed an account of their destitution, thus showing the newly arisen competitive capitalism in a new light that prompted them to take action themselves" (ibid., p. 15). - Even previous to their important meeting in the late summer of 1844, Marx had read and been profoundly impressed by Engels' article "Umrisse zu einer Kritik der Nationalökonomie" (Outline of a Critique of National Economy), from which Engels' 1845 book grew, as it had been published in February in the "Deutsch-Französische Jahrbücher", which Marx had co-edited. Engels' notion that political economy revealed bourgeois society's contradictions, which in turn pointed the way to their own overcoming, would provide the framework for the future direction of Marxist thought. - Hinges professionally repaired. Extremely rare first separate printings of Engels's "Anti-Dühring" (properly, "Mr Eugen Dühring's Revolution in Science"), previously published only in serialized form in the "Vorwärts" between January 1877 and July 1878 and today considered one of the most influential Marxist texts. At the suggestion of Liebknecht, who had his eye on the generally poor socialist readers unwilling to spend the cost of an entire book at one go, the work was then separately released in two fascicules: the first appeared in mid-September 1877, while the second came out together with the book edition in July 1878. The present volume unites these two separate instalments, using the title page of the second and including the preface - issued with the second part - before the first, so as to approximate the appearance of the complete book edition. - Prompted by a need to counter the growing influence of Dühring's anti-Marxist brand of socialism on German social democracy, the polemic was - as Engels wrote to Marx - an attempt "to produce an encyclopedic survey of our conception of the philosophical, natural-science and historical problems". While the term "scientific socialism" was not in fact coined by Engels, it was in this work that he invested it with the meaning as it is generally understood today: by praising it as the most epoch-making achievement of Marx's work and the theoretical expression of the proletarian movement (pp. 175, 236), Engels here prepared the ground for Marxism as a doctrine. - The preface (usually bound between pp. 120 and 121) is dated "June 1878". As nearly always only one of the two possible title pages is included, namely in this case that of the second instalment, with the heading of part one, "I. Philosophie", supplied in ink by a contemporary owner above the printed caption "II. Politische Oekonomie. Sozialismus" (the book edition was given a new title reading "Philosophie. Politische Oekonomie. Sozialismus"). - The typographical errors have been corrected in the text by a contemporary hand in pencil. Some browning as common due to paper. Elected to the Berlin city government (1883), he emerged as an outstanding administrator; elected to the Reichstag (1884); member of the party Central Committee (1887), its chairman (1890); also presidium member at international congresses; member (1890) of the International Socialist Bureau, Brussels. First Russian translation of Engels's important history of the German Peasants' War of 1525, begun shortly after the German revolutionary events of 1848 and published in a series of articles in Neue Rheinische Zeitung. This was the first work to argue that the reasons for the uprising had been socio-economic, rather than cultural or religious. It also deduced from its failure the need for collaboration between the peasants and the urban proletariat. The present edition contains a translation of Engels's new preface written in 1874, for the third 1875 edition, as well as a preface by the editor, which cites a letter written by Engels shortly before his death. Aleksandr Finn-Enotaevskii (1872-1943) was a noted Russian Marxist who fled abroad after being arrested and collaborated with the Bolsheviks and Lenin himself; after 1917 he was closer to the Menshevik faction. He was prosecuted during the Stalinist repressions of the 1930s. - Not in the Bernstein-Souvarine catalog. This copy has a curious provenance: an undocumented Russian student organization in a small Saxon town, possibly allied with revolutionary tendencies. Rare; KVK and OCLC only locate the copies at Bibliothèque de Genève and IISG. Not at the Russian State or National Libraries.

This British edition was almost certainly issued to tie in with the publication of the latest English translation of Engels and Marx's "Manifesto of the Communist Party", also published by Reeves in London in 1888. It was published using the sheets of the first US edition which appeared in New York the previous year; the first edition printed in the UK did not appear for another four years. Whilst the first New York edition is uncommon, this London edition is particularly scarce with scant few auction records and not many institutional holdings: Copac lists two in the UK, at the British Library and Oxford, with Worldcat listing three more, two in the US and one in the Netherlands. - A few blemishes to the contents, occasional old pencilled underlining and marginalia, sometime neatly recased with new endpapers, some light wear to the edges of the binding, but generally a decent copy. Provenance: formerly in the Midlands Workers' Library of Birmingham with their loan label to the second free endpaper (listing a single loan in March 1945) and the faint remains of a white numbered shelfmark to the spine; the library's highly distinctive and attractive pictorial bookplate to the front pastedown featuring illustrations of workers set amid Communist iconography. The cited opinions generally regard trade and mention corn imported flowers wine wool fish sarsaparilla vinegar gloves cattle and stockfish among other goods; there is a particular emphasis on laws regarding trade with England's growing empire: entry number 99 is ""The East India Companys Charter"" and others focus on goods specifically from Ireland or the Caribbean. Quarto modern full brown calf raised bands red morocco spine label. $3200.Original manuscript from the late 17th century with the parliamentary impeachment proceedings against 14 individuals during the reign of Charles II.The accountswritten in legible script with an index at frontbegin with the proceedings against Viscount Mordaunt charged with raping the daughter of the surveyor of Windsor Castle when Mordaunt was the castle's constable. Although they include a number of cases including that of William Penn in 1668 the clear focus is on the Popish plot a supposed conspiracy promulgated in 1678 that led to the arrest and trial of five Catholic lordsBaron Arundell the Marquess of Powis Baron Belasyse Baron Petre and Viscount Staffordall of which are recounted in this manuscript. As anticatholic hysteria waned and it became increasingly clear that the ""plot"" was a fiction the fallout entrapped more of the players: the impeachment of William Scroggs who served as the Chief Justice during the trials is detailed as is that of the Lord High Treasurer the Earl of Danby who was charged with concealing the plot and Edward Fitzharris who had attempted to implicate Danby in Sir Edmondbury Godfrey's murder in 1678 an event which fanned the flames of anticatholic hysteria. Folio disbound 8 pages. ¶ An act passed by parliament under the reign of George II that attempts to discourage swearing by establishing a set of fines for the offenders: first time offenders could be fined from one to five shillings; seamen soldiers and government employees were fined at rates lower than gentlemen; and swearing within earshot of a constable could land one in a house of corrections or the stocks. London: Printed for J. Morgan 1756 1756. First edition one of two issues; this one without the errata on page 76. ESTC T22278; Eddy Samuel Johnson Book Reviewer in the Literary Magazine 26; Hanley Samuel Johnson Book Reviewer pages 134-36. First and final leaves a little dust-soiled; very good copy. 8vo modern brown quarter buckram blue paper boards gilt lettering. With half-title. ¶ A defense of Admiral John Byng 1704-1757 of the Royal Navy who was on trial for treason based on dubious charges. He was found guilty and was tragically executed the following year. Shebbearre 1709-1788 a pamphleteer and contrarian wrote numerous tracts during the political crises of 1755-56 attacking the misadventures of the English government abroad. None according to Shebbearre were more blatantly wrongheaded than the trial of John Byng. Shebbearre's perceived lack of patriotism landed him in prison and he was roundly criticized and lampooned by the likes of Johnson Smollett and Griffith. Johnson eventually sided with Shebbearre in the Byng matter and approvingly reviewed An Appeal to the People in the Literary Magazine in October 1756. ESTC attributes An Appeal to John Byng himself and he did write pamphlets in his own defense but both Hanley and Eddy show convincing evidence that this was indeed by Shebbearre. <br/><br/> London: Printed for J.
