‎FAIRYTALE IN THE ANCIENT WORLD‎

‎Gift inscription from the author to the half-title. Light shelfwear. ; In this, the first modern study of the ancient fairytale, Graham Anderson asks whether the familiar children's fairytale of today existed in the ancient world. He examines texts from the classical period and finds many stories which resemble those we know today, including: * a Jewish Egyptian Cinderella* a Snow White whose enemy is the goddess Artemis* a Pied Piper at Troy. He puts forward many previously unsuspected candidates as classical variants of the modern fairytale and argues that the degree of violence and cruelty in the ancient tales means they must have been meant for adults. ; 256 pages‎

‎KING HORN‎

‎Ex-library copy with usual stamps, call numbers and pocket. Dustjacket is protected in archival sleeve and taped to book. Dustjacket is worn at spine ends. ; Juvenile version of the classic tale. Romance of Horn is an Anglo-Norman literature romans d'aventure ("romance and adventure") tale written around 1170 by an anonymous author named "Thomas". The hero, named Horn, is the son of the king Aälof of Suddene (probably somewhere near Devon). Horn becomes orphaned when he is set adrift in a boat from the shores of southern England and reaches Brittany, where he grows to manhood and falls in love with the king's daughter Rigmel. There he defends the kingdom from invading Saracens, but the king banishes him to Ireland. In Ireland he falls in love once more with the king's daughter, but then finally returns to Brittany and, after a series of adventures, marries Rigmel, and eventually assumes the throne there. The story became the base for one of the earliest Middle English romances King Horn, written around 1225.; 8vo; 215 pages‎

‎THE FORTUNES OF KING ARTHUR‎

‎Library barcode on ffep--however, no other library markings. Cloth has a tear along bottom of spine-- (2") but does not cut through the actual board. ; The essays in this volume offer a general overview and a number of detailed examinations of Arthur's fortunes, in two senses. First is the role of Fortune itself, often personified and consistently instrumental, in accounts of Arthur's court and reign. More generally the articles trace the trajectory of the Arthurian legend - its birth, rise and decline - through the middle ages. The final essay follows the continued turning of Fortune's wheel, emphasizing the modern revival and flourishing of the legend. The authors, all distinguished Arthurian scholars, illustrate their arguments through studies of early Latin and Welsh sources, chronicles, romances [in English, French, German, Italian, Latin and Welsh], manuscript illustration and modern literary texts. ; Arthurian Studies LXIV; 1.02 x 9.21 x 6.22 Inches; 288 pages‎

‎WHO'S WHO IN NON-CLASSICAL MYTHOLOGY‎

‎Most books on mythology are primarily concerned with the Greek and Roman tradition, giving the equally vibrant myths of other cultures short shrift. Providing a much-needed solution to this problem, this unique guide offers wide-ranging and thorough coverage of non-classical mythological figures, from the Abominable Snowman of the Himalayas to Zu, the lion-headed Sumerian storm bird. With its global, multicultural perspective, Who's Who in Non-Classical Mythology presents exciting and readable accounts of the gods, heroes, and myths of Europe (including the Celts, Teutons, Slavs, and Basques) , the Americas, Africa, Australia, China, Japan, and Indonesia. For those interested in a fresh approach to world mythology it is indispensable; for lovers of the classical tradition it will open up a whole new world. ; 235 pages‎

‎Burkert, Walter; Peter Bing (Trans. )‎

‎SAVAGE ENERGIES Lessons of Myth and Ritual in Ancient Greece‎

‎DJ spine sunned. ; We often think of classical Greek society as a model of rationality and order. Yet as Walter Burkert demonstrates in these influential essays on the history of Greek religion, there were archaic, savage forces surging beneath the outwardly calm face of classical Greece, whose potentially violent and destructive energies, Burkert argues, were harnessed to constructive ends through the interlinked uses of myth and ritual. For example, in a much-cited essay on the Athenian religious festival of the Arrephoria, Burkert uncovers deep connections between this strange nocturnal ritual, in which two virgin girls carried sacred offerings into a cave and later returned with something given to them there, and tribal puberty initiations by linking the festival with the myth of the daughters of Kekrops. Other chapters explore the origins of tragedy in blood sacrifice; the role of myth in the ritual of the new fire on Lemnos; the ties between violence, the Athenian courts, and the annual purification of the divine image; and how failed political propaganda entered the realm of myth at the time of the Persian Wars. ; 0.63 x 9.32 x 6.3 Inches; 152 pages‎

‎THE NEW GOLDEN BOUGH A New Abridgement of the Classic Work by Sir James George Frazer. Edited, and with Notes and Foreword‎

‎Wraps are a bit browned. Scholar's name to ffep (de Montmollin). Institution stamp to ffep (Dept. Of Classics- University of Toronto). Light edgewear to wraps. Lower corner of first few pages creased. ; 738 pages; The Golden Bough describes our ancestors' primitive methods of worship, sex practices, strange rituals and festivals. Disproving the popular thought that primitive life was simple, this monumental survey shows that savage man was enmeshed in a tangle of magic, taboos, and superstitions. Revealed here is the evolution of man from savagery to civilization, from the modification of his weird and often bloodthirsty customs to the entry of lasting moral, ethical, and spiritual values.‎
