Condition is graded only Fair-Good due to moderate cover wear and a thin damp stain 1 cm wide or less along the outer edge of approx. the first 100 pages in the margin only; text is NOT affected. Otherwise pages are clean and unmarked. Inner hinge cracks have been neatly and securely reglued. Original pale yellow endpapers are moderately soiled. NO owner's name or bookplate. Bound in the original olive-green cloth stamped in burgundy and white on the spine and front board. Illustrated with a frontispiece portrait and 14 other engravings in the text. This is an account of the life and violent death of the Methodist minister and prohibitionist Rev. George C. Haddock. In the early 1880s Iowa's temperance movement initiated a campaign to outlaw the manufacture and sale of alcoholic beverages. Although a constitutional amendment was approved by the legislature and by the voters of the state the Iowa Supreme Court invalidated it on procedural grounds. In 1884 a strict "prohibitory law" was passed which succeeded in greatly reducing the open sale of liquor in Iowa. Opponents of the law were many and sometimes responded with mob violence. This book details one such instance. Rev. Haddock had made enemies in town by his insistence that the 1884 law be obeyed. It was on Aug. 3 1886 that a crowd of brewers and saloonkeepers formed at the corner of Fourth and Water streets in downtown Sioux City. Rev. Haddock was there collecting evidence of illegal liquor sales. Someone from the crowd shot and killed the 55-year-old. John Arensdorf was charged with the crime but a jury would later acquit him. The author of this book Frank Channing Haddock 1853-1915 was the victim's son. Trained as both a minister and lawyer Frank Haddock went on to be an influential New Thought writer and lecturer. He authored the popular 7-volume Power-Book Library series: Power of Will: A Practical Companion-Book for Unfoldment of Selfhood Through Direct Personal Culture; Power for Success Through Culture of Vibrant Magnetism; The Personal Atmosphere; Business Power; The Culture of Courage; Practical Psychology; and Creative Personality. Hawley with two Hawley private library ink stamps. Copies INSCRIBED by the AUTHOR and as well preserved as this one are scarce. Illustrated with many engravings and maps. The year 1867 is printed on both the title and copyright pages with no other printing listed. SABIN 57851 cites this 1867 work as well as 1861 and 1862 editions that have fewer pages and a slightly different title. According to politicalgraveyard.com Seth C. Hawley 1810-1884 was a railroad builder lawyer newspaper editor member of New York state assembly; and U.S. Consul in Nassau. He was also chief clerk New York City Police Department including during the 1863 Draft Riot and where Otis was a police surgeon from 1861 until 1872. Marbled paper is rubbed/chipped at extremities. No date but circa 1880-1890. Illustrated title page. Bampfylde-Moore Carew 1693-1770 was called "King of the gipsies." "His career was a long series of swindling and imposture very ingeniously carried out� He continued his course of vagabond roguery for some time� was convicted of being a vagrant and sentenced to be transported to Maryland. On his arrival� escaped and fell into the hands of some friendly Indians. - DNB. According to Howes C132 Carew "operated confidence games among colonial suckers from Virginia to Connecticut - the memorable first of a long line of such artists who have continued to flourish in this climate." He returned to Scotland about 1745. Also described here are his picaresque adventures among gypsies on the Continent and in London. This "Popular Edition" contains "A Vocabulary of Words used by the Scottish Gipsies" "A Few Sentences in the Gipsy Language" and "A Dictionary of the Cant Language generally used by Mendicants." This edition is not cited in Black's GYPSY BIBLIOGRAPHY but seems to be an expanded edition of Black's item 768 circa 1870. This copy has the 1898 bookplate of Roger de Coverly. Could his be the bookbinder Roger de Coverly who apprenticed with Joseph Zaehnsdorf After ten years at Leighton's Coverly formed his own bindery and did work for many important clients including William Morris.
